iOS Overtakes Linux In Web Market Share

NetMarketShare reports that in both July and August 2010, Apple's iOS took a larger bite of the total Web usage market.

NetMarketShare notes:

"In order to more accurately describe usage share for Apple devices, the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad are now being grouped under their common operating system 'iOS'. Each of these devices can still be tracked separately using the Operating System Versions report. When these devices are combined, they have over 1% of global browsing share, which is now higher than Linux."

Classic iPod Mods

PC Mag's Benj Edwards says:

It's a fact of life that Apple will, without fail, replace current models of the iPod with newer, flashier versions. And eventually (if not today), Apple will retire the iconic click wheel iPod design concept in favor of models with touch-screen interfaces. The click wheel's fate was already sealed when Apple released the iPod Touch in 2007.

But don't throw away that old iPod just yet. If it still works, you can breathe new life into it through artistic or technical expression in the form of hardware modifications (which we'll be exploring here), as others have done since Apple first introduced its ubiquitous media player....

Skyfire Browser Submitted To Apple's App Store: Flash Coming to iOS?

Laptop Mag's Eric Chiu reports:
Share

We've spilled a fair amount of digital ink on the problems that Flash has had in the mobile space in the past few months, but Skyfire–developer of the eponymous mobile browser–looks to be throwing one heck of a curve ball.

Today, the developer announced that they've submitted a version of the Skyfire mobile browser to Apple's App Store. The Skyfire browser–which came to Android back in late April–is capable of playing and viewing Flash video without Adobe Flash Player.

iPad to get iOS 4.2 in November

CNET's Scott Stein says:

iPad owners: Are you feeling left out by all the iOS 4.1 love on the iPhone 4 and the new iPod Touch? Don't worry, you're being remembered. Unfortunately, you still won't get multitasking till November.

Frustrated With Irresponsible Drivers? Yes, There's An App For That!

Tampa based Crash Bang Studios today released Fail Driver version 1.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch. Fail Driver allows frustrated drivers to be able to report and tag other cars by capturing their license plate information, and optionally capturing a picture of the offending vehicle.

Fail Driver is ready to use from the moment it is installed. The application allows users to choose the event that best suits the action of the offending driver, such as: 'Cut me/others off', 'Red light/stop sign runner', and 'Parking challenged'. The application records the GPS coordinates of the event allowing others to see the location.

"Commuting to work each day I often witness rude or irresponsible drivers. For a long time I have wanted to find a way to 'tag' these people and highlight their actions'" says cofounder Mike Shaw. "Get their license, tap a button, report their action. We now allow peer review of driving!"

Version 1.1 Feature Highlights:
(*) Map view showing recent submissions
(*) Show current location and local events near user
(*) Ability to tap on a map pin and then view the event details
(*) Ability to delete a submitted entry, provided it is deleted on the same device and within 24 hours of submission
(*) Added profanity check for text entries

Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone and iPod touch
(*) Requires iOS 4.0 or later
(*) 0.9 MB

Fail Driver 1.1 is free and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Lifestyle category.
