Opera Designing Safari Replacement for iPhone OS

MaximumPC's Justin Kerr reports:

Opera has always had a tough time taking on the big guys in the desktop browser market, but anyone who has given Opera Mini a try on their smart phone platform of choice would probably be pleasantly surprised. Rather than simply spitting out web pages just like everyone else, the "Mini" version of the browser will actually relay messages through the company's compression servers, vastly reducing both load time and data usage on the device.....

....according to Opera's Jon von Tetzschner the company is not just working on an iPhone version of its browser, but that it doesn't anticipate Apple having any problem with it either.....

5 Reasons Why Tablets Suck And You Won't Buy One

Tom's Hardware's Tuan Nguyen says:

Let's admit it: tablets suck. They've been around for at least a decade and many are faster and offer more capabilities than Apple's iPad. But why haven't you bought one yet?....

Poor usability has always been an issue since the dawn of tablets. Consumer interest was only recently resurrected when rumors began about Apple releasing a tablet device, which ended up becoming true. Most gruesomely, the iPad received not only praise - mainly by Apple loyalists - but also a ton of flack from PC users. Then again, it's not a perfect device in its own class and some Apple fans criticized it, too.

But hold the horses. The industry went from "who gives a hoot" about tablets to "wow, the iPad sucks" in a mere two months?...

Here's why:

1. Tablets Are Niche Devices......

2. Full OSes Were Always There, Yet Those Who Complained That The iPad Doesn't Have One Still Never Bought One.....

3. High-End Hardware Specs Sometimes Don't Matter....

4. Interface, Interface, Interface.....

5. Lack Of Tablet Apps.....

Chip Maker To Take On iPad With $99 Tablet

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

Chip maker Marvell - the company that acquired Intel's ARM-based processor portfolio back in 2006 - is to pitch a low-cost tablet to students.

Dubbed the Moby, the device will provide 1080p video playback, always-on - Wi-Fi rather than 3G - internet connectivity, gaming-capable 3D graphics, e-book reader software and support for Adobe Flash content.

And it'll only cost you $99, Marvell said.

Apple Having Rough Time Convincing Companies To Provide iPad Content

CrunchGear's Nicholas Deleon reports:

Looks like Apple is running into some last-minute trouble getting content providers to provide content for the iPad. The device goes on sale next week, and Apple has already seen plenty of pre-orders even if those pre-orders may have quickly fallen off.....

The problem is that these companies are scared. They're afraid of a number of things: that cutting a deal with Apple with endanger their relationships with traditional TV outlets such as cable companies, or that any deal will give Apple too much sway over their future decision-making process.....

.....I'd be surprised if this iPad thing becomes anything more than a mere toy for people who always have to buy the latest shiny new piece of plastic.

Apple Swears iPad Partners to Secrecy

BusinessWeek's Douglas MacMillan reports:

Apple makes big demands of software developers who want an early crack at the iPad. Would-be testers of the tablet-style computer, due to be released Apr. 3, must promise to keep it isolated in a room with blacked-out windows, according to four people familiar with the more than 10-page pact that bars partners from disclosing information about the iPad.

iPad Week 1: 190,000 Pre-orders

Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt says:

It's been a busy week for the iPad.

It started off with a bang, as Apple racked up pre-orders at the rate of more than 25,000 units per hour early Friday March 12, according to the team tracking order numbers at Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board.

By Sunday, the initial frenzy had cooled. The pre-order rate slowed to 30,000 units per day on Monday, 10,000 on Wednesday and 5,000 on Thursday.

Total pre-orders for the week: 190,000 units....

iPhone Users Warned Of High Overseas Cost

The Telegraph says:

Consumers using devices like the iPhone and the Google Nexus One currently face unlimited bills when they access web services while travelling in Europe and other parts of the world.

Although data download costs in the 27 European Union countries will be capped when new rules are introduced this summer, travellers to the United States and elsewhere in the world will still face high costs.

9To5Mac's Seth Weintraub reports:

Wintek Blamed For Apple iPad Delay, Says Report

DIGITIMES' Yvonne Yu reports:

Taiwan-based touch panel supplier Wintek has been blamed for a delay of Apple's iPad shipments, according to a Chinese-language report on Liberty Times.

The report claimed that Wintek is facing a manufacturing bottleneck in its touch panel production, and its low yield rate for touch panels has hampered its shipments to Apple.

The Tech Night Owl: Of iPad Preorders and Tea Leaves

If you believe the reports that have been widely circulated by Mac sites and such mainstream media resources as Fortune, an estimated 190,000 orders have been received by Apple for its new portable computing gadget as of the time I’m writing this issue, but the initial flurry has seriously subsided. That raises the larger question as to just how well this new product will fare in the marketplace.
