Statement by Apple on White iPhone 4
Short and terse, Apple issued this two-sentence statement on Friday:
White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.
4 Ways to Get a White iPhone 4 Now
PC World's Jared Newman says:
Bad news for folks who've been holding out for a white iPhone 4: Apple has delayed the white version of its popular smartphone until later this year. The white iPhone 4 was first delayed until late July, and then promised for the end of the month by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs just a week ago, but now there's no ship date in sight.
What to do, then? The impatient have several options, though I'll admit none of them are ideal....

Apple Delays White iPhone 4 - Again
The Register's Tony Smith reports:
Apple still can't work out how to mass-produce an iPhone 4 coloured white and has now delayed the handset - again - until "later this year".

Apple's Real Problem With The White iPhone 4 - Well, Potentially
TechCrunch's MG Siegler says:
I've fielded a lot of questions today about the iPhone 4. No, not about the antenna - that was last week - today, all people want to know is why the hell is white version being delayed again?..... What I can say that this is potentially a real problem for Apple - and I don't mean from a manufacturing perspective.

India's Human Resources Ministry Unveils $35 Tablet Computer
India's Union Minister for human Resource Development Shri Kapil Siba late last week unveiled a "low-cost computing-cum-access device" - essentially a tablet computer - with a selling price projected to be around $35. However, the HR ministry's ultimate target is to bring down the cost of this device to $20 and ultimately to $10.

Since this effort of continuous reduction in price and enhancement in capabilities would require a constant endeavour for R&D, IIT Rajasthan and some other IITs and technical institutions are setting up research teams to cover a wide range of issues in achieving Sibal's ultimate goal in terms of price and quality.
The Linux-based tablet has been developed in support of India's Education Policy objectives of access, equity and quality by providing low cost and affordable access cum computing devices to students and teachers and providing high quality e-content free of cost to all learners in the country. Connectivity to universities and colleges has already started. Nearly 8,500 Indian colleges have already been connected, high quality e-content in various subjects is being created, and under the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), nearly 500 web based and video courses are available and uploaded on sakshat , YouTube and NPTEL portals and another 1100 courses in various disciplines of engineering and science are getting generated in 4 quadrant approach.
The ministry started its hardware development efforts subsequent to lukewarm response from known corporates in this sector, by holding discussions on this concept with a group of Professors whose students were guided to produce the motherboard for the propsoed low cost devices with ample flexibility to change components.
A number of teams have been moving back and forth independently but constantly interacting with the HRD Ministry and improving upon design parameters and customization guidance for Indian students. The efforts of some of the teams culminating in the tablet device unveiled last week. The aim is to reach such devices to the students of colleges and Universities and to provide these institutions a host of choices of low cost access devices around Rs. 1500/- ($35) or less in near future.
India's HR ministry has specified the following minimum feature and specification targets for the device:
Support for video web Conferencing facility
Multimedia content viewer for example .pdf, docx, .ods, adp, .doc, .xls, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .odt, .zip, AVCHD, AVI, AC3, etc.
Searchable Pdf reader
Unzip tool for unzipping zip files.
Possibility of installing suitable firmware upgradation.
Computing capabilities such as Open Office , SciLab , cups (for printing support)
Media player capable of playing streamed as well as stored media files.
Internet browsing with flash plug-in, JavaScript, pdf plug-in java.
Wireless communication for Audio/video I/O.
Cloud computing option.

AT&T: Businesses Keen on IPad
Macworld's David Dahlquist says:
On Thursday, AT&T reported in its earnings call earlier that it activated 400,000 to 500,000 3G iPads during its second quarter. What may come as news, however, is just how many of these activations are coming from businesses--AT&T notes that a "surprising" number of business customers are approaching the company about the iPad.
This early embrace by businesses stands in contrast to the iPhone's first days on the market, when its lack of enterprise-class connectivity and security options led businesses to consider it more of a cool toy in comparison to the "professional" Blackberry.

Apple and AT&T: Why Monopolies Make People Mad
The Huffington Post's B.J. Gallagher says that "Steve Jobs says that the iPhone antenna problem 'has been blown so out of proportion that it's incredible.' He seems puzzled and annoyed by the intense anger, frustration, and criticism bombarding him. What he doesn't understand is that whenever you establish a monopoly, you had better make sure that your product or service is perfect - because any glitches or problems will be magnified by customers' feelings of being trapped."

BlindType Brings Software Keyboards To The Next Level
TechSpot.com's Matthew DeCarlo says:
Futurists will tell you the hardware keyboard has its days numbered, and although descendants of IBM's Model M are still the most popular choice for alphanumeric input, software implementations are slowly phasing in - but they're not perfect yet. On-screen keyboards lack the touch sensitivity of a physical keyboard and the human fingertip is generally larger than keys on a smartphone, making it difficult to type accurately.
Developers use various methods to counteract these limitations, but even the best examples can still leave your words jumbled and the folks behind a new system are tired of reading your incoherent messages. BlindType pledges to eliminate touch-typing frustrations by correcting sloppy typing.....

Tablets May Allow 'Re-set' For Media: News Corp
AFP's Chris Lefkow reports that tablet computers such as Apple's iPad may allow the news industry a "re-set" and to start charging for content after years of giving it away for free, according to senior News Corp. chief digital officer Jon Miller at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Colorado on Friday, noting that News Corp.'s Wall Street Journal already charges a subscription fee for full access to WSJ.com and company chairman Rupert Murdoch has said he eventually plans to charge online readers of all of the titles in his newspaper stable.
Lefkow says Miller acknowledged that erecting a pay barrier around a newspaper website did result in some loss of readership, and that publishers will need to muster the fortitude to stay the course because consumer behaviour and expectations are among the hardest things to change in the world.
[Good luck with that, Ed.]

The Real Reason Why Consumers Won't Pay Online
Fortune Sr. Editor at Large Adam Lashinsky says:
Short answer: it's a pain. That's good for Apple and Amazon, but not many others.
Consumers badly want to help buying stuff on the Web. It turns out it's not as easy as we'd think it'd be by 2010.
