Note to Apple: 27 Million Americans Are Buying a Tablet Next Year, and it Might Not Be Yours

Gizmodo's Sam Biddle reports that a new survey out of Forrester reports 14% of Americans plan on purchasing a tablet device next year - some 27 million prospective buyers, and perhaps more interestingly, only 3.8% of future buyers said they were set on an iPad.

LG: iPad Won't Match Our Tablet

CNET's Don Reisinger says that LG believes it has what it takes to supplant the iPad as the most desired tablet on the market, citing Chang Ma, LG's vice president of marketing for LG's mobile-devices division, telling the Wall Street Journal last week that "Our tablet will be better than the iPad."

Ma is also quoted acknowledging that the iPad is a fine device, but criticizing it for not letting people "do much work on it," and that LG's Optimus tablet's focus will be productivity.

Lots of Competition for iPad Coming

More than 30 new tablet computers will flood what's shaping up to be a red-hot market.

The Kiplinger Letter's Drake Lundell says that Apple's iPad is about to get lots of company, with a slew of new tablet computers are coming on the market this fall from PC giants HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba, to name just a few, as well as from smartphone makers like Research in Motion (RIM), Samsung, and Motorola, which will give buyers many more options and bring down prices. Lundell notes that if they had been classified and counted as notebook computers, iPads would've been the third largest seller in that category, ahead of Toshiba, Lenovo and Dell in the second quarter, after only two months on the market.

Lundell also reports that among functions not available on the somewhat features-challenged iPad that will be offered on some of the competing tablets will be a USB port on the Windows-based tablet from Microsoft, support for Adobe's Flash software, which accounts for 90% of Web video, crisper screens, and dual core processors for higher speeds, as well as some of the units - particularly one being developed by Verizon and Motorola - having the capability to stream live television to the screen, the competition possibly even forcing Apple to reduce its iPad prices.

BlackBerry's "iPad" To Use US Army's Crusher-Vehicle Tech

Nerve news reports that BlackBerry maker Research In Motion will pack its soon-to-be-launched iPad with a unique software technology currently being used in navigating the powerful Crusher combat vehicle by the US Army, and reports say the BlackBerry iPad will run on software developed by QNX Software Systems, an Ottawa-based software company RIM acquired for $200 million in April to have exclusive access to its software technology for its tablet.

Nerve notes that the QNX software technology powers not only the US Army's six-wheeled unmanned Crusher combat vehicle, but also the music, media and navigation systems in BMW and Porsche automobiles.

Fix Buggy IOS Apps by Forcing Them to Quit

Macworld's Ted Landau notes that a new Apple support article describes a possible problem with messages received in the Mail app on an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4, and offers a simple fix: Quit the Mail app from the multitask bar...

Apple Eyes Kill Switch For Jailbroken iPhones... For Your Own Good

The Register's Dan Goodin reports:

Apple has applied for a patent covering an elaborate series of measures to automatically protect iPhone owners from thieves and other unauthorized users. But please withhold the applause.

The BlackBerry Torch's Biggest Failure: RIM's Ridiculous Expectations

Gizmodo's Brian Barrett says:

The BlackBerry Torch only sold 150,000 units in its first three days? That's not bad at all. The real disappointment here is how deeply RIM bought into its own hype.

"When I purchased my first iPhone, I instantly fell in love with it" said Gregg Levine, founder of 288 Vroom LLC. "As a avid reader, I searched the app store for good reading material for when I was 'mobile'. While I found plenty of book apps to choose from and many relatively inexpensive ones, most were either just a single story or a small collection of stories. So in order to have a large collection of stories on my iPhone, I would have had to pay for a bunch of apps and eventually I would have run out of space on my phone. So I decided to create an app that was inexpensive, attractively designed, and most importantly had a large collection of stories without taking up too much memory on the phone. From this idea came 301+ Short Stories. I hope the users of this app enjoy it as much as I do."

Feature Highlights:
(*) Extensive and expanding library - currently over 301 stories by 89 authors
