iPhone 4 Launches In Canada On Rogers - Discount Offered Until Sept. 30

Rogers Senior Director of Social Media and RedBoard blogger Keith McArthur says:

We're excited to share some news about how our customers can upgrade to iPhone 4.... As the Canadian carrier with the most iPhone customers and experience, we're making a commitment to allocate the majority of inventory we receive from Apple to existing customers wanting to upgrade to the iPhone 4.

And while we can't do this every year, we're excited to announce a special upgrade offer that gives our iPhone customers the chance to get an iPhone 4 at a discounted price until September 30, 2010.

Rogers customers have the flexibility to upgrade to any new device at any time by paying full price for the device. However, as a benefit of being a Rogers customer, we're investing in a special iPhone 4 hardware upgrade offer to reward our customers for doing business with us, as long as they activated a Rogers iPhone on a term contract on or prior to June 7, 2010 – the day Apple announced iPhone 4 at the Worldwide Developers Conference....

New customers can purchase a 16GB iPhone 4 for $159 or a 32GB iPhone 4 for $269, each with a new three-year voice and data plan....

Do Growing Bible App Sales Signal A Shift In iPad Demographics?

Atlantic Monthly a senior editor and lead technology writer Alexis Madrigal reports that on Monday, a Bible cracked the top 10 highest-grossing book applications for the iPad for the first time, according to Drew Haninger, CEO of the scripture app's publisher, Olive Tree.

Madrigal suggests, cautiously, that the burgeoning poopularity of iPhone and iPad Bible applications may indicate that iPad demographics are broadening out the conventional wisdom presumption of a mostly urban, liberal, fairly areligious customer base.

Not a totally surprising phenomenon notes Madrigal, being as the Bible has been a mainstay iPhone book application, and that over on Amazon's Kindle it rank 50th in their list of best-sellers, with Olive Tree's NIV {New International Version] Bible BibleReader currently the highest-grossing iPhone Bible, second in books behind Dr. Seuss's "Green Eggs and Ham."

Madrigal thinks it's also noteworthy that the NIV is generally considered to be a "conservative" Bible translation and less likely to be used at more liberal mainline churches that favor the the 1989 New Revised Standard Version which conservative and traditionalist Christians generally dismiss as a politically-corrected revisionist liberal paraphrase. Indeed, The NIV was originally conceived as a conservative response to the 1952 Revised Standard Version. American Catholics lean to the New American Bible.

And while he points out that books represent only a small slice of total app. sales, the succes of Bible apps. perhaps allow us to draw a more complete picture of who iPad users really are, beyond just "selfish elites."

Holy Scrollers!

Madrigal also links to a February 22, 2010 piece by the Boston Phoenix's Chris Faraone entitled "Holy Scrollers!" in which Farone asserts that "the future of e-publishing can be found in one of the world's oldest books," and that if you want to see what a 21st Century reading experience should look like... the marketplace you're looking for is e-Bibles, which at the time of writing represented six of the top 20 most popular paid e-books in the Apple AppStore, with Olive Tree's Bible Reader is consistently one of the most downloaded free books.

Farone contends that "it is e-Bibles that have helped push technology forward," musing that "it is somewhat ironic that religious Christians, whose most politically aggressive, evangelical factions are vociferously anti-science, are spurring this evolution," eclipsing the pornography sector, with Christians now the technology torchbearers, and at least "when it comes to e-Books and the digital revolution, they shall be led by holy warriors."

"These righteous developers claim to have a lot more tricks up their sleeves," Farone reports, while "their secular programming counterparts, on the other hand, are considerably behind, and in some cases are checking e-Bibles with their jaws dropped."

5 Things I Don't Like About My iPad

Low End Mac's Frank Fox says:

When people see you with an iPad, they often will ask, "What don't you like about it?" and "What do you really like about it?"

It would be too easy to make a list of things that I like. Instead, here's my list of the five things I don't like about the iPad. This is based on using the model with 16 GB memory and 3G unlimited access.....

Number 5: Price
Number 4: WiFi Connection
Number 3: Screen Sensitivity
Number 2: The App Store
Number 1: No Multitasking
One More Thing: Safari [Or "No Multitasking Pt. II]

"The Safari browser is an equally punishing experience."

Lucky for me, I haven't had to deal with writing documents, needing to take a picture, or tried to print anything. There is more pain on tap, if you go looking for it.

Macworld's IPhone 4 Cover a Self-portrait

Macworld's Jason Snell reports:

Creating a Macworld magazine cover is a complicated process. We editors have to come up with topics worthy of the cover, of course. But then it's up to our creative team to get down to details, coming up with the right words and images to grab a potential reader's eye....

One of Macworld's greatest weapons in print is our contributing photographer, Peter Belanger. Peter has shot almost every photograph in the pages of the magazine over the past few years....

Peter's contribution to the September 2010 issue's cover is even more remarkable, however: our image of the new iPhone 4 was photographed and post-processed entirely on another iPhone 4.....

iPads For Hospitals: Is This A Good Idea?

"Can you wash it, drop it, stop your patients from stealing it?" says The Register's Drew Cullen:

Next year, 500 doctors and nurses in Victoria hospitals will trial the use of iPads.

Graduate doctors, rather than crusty consultants, will get the devices, as the "younger group of students and graduates of the health professions have grown up with technology all around them," Daniel Andrews, Victoria's health minister, said.

Australia's medicos are not alone in using iPads in hospitals - California, inevitably, got there first.....

But iPads...? .... Earlier this year, we republished an article from Smarthealthcare.com, which rubbished the suitability of the iPhone for health use....

Ballmer Says Microsoft At Work On iPad Rival

CNET's Ina Fried reports:

Acknowledging Apple's early success with the iPad, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer insisted Thursday that the software maker is hard at work on Windows-based tablets....

As for Apple and the iPad, Ballmer said, "they've sold certainly more than I'd like them to have sold."....

Ballmer... said [the MS tablet OS] will center around Windows 7 as opposed to Windows Phone and Intel rather than ARM processors [which would give them a leg up on the iPad for serious users compared with the iOS - Ed.] ... "We're coming full guns. The operating system is called Windows."

Norway's Largest Paper: iPhone 4 Antennagate is a US Problem

Appleinsider's Daniel Eran Dilger reports:

After testing Apple's iPhone 4 against competing HTC and Nokia models in a remote area on the edge of Norwegian carrier Telenor's mobile coverage, the county's largest paper has concluded that its antenna design is "just as good and bad as competitors," rather than suffering any defect.

TrendyDigital Design Unveils Dimension -A Cooler Case for iPad

[Press Release]

TrendyDigital Design, a leading supplier of high-quality custom eReader jackets, sleeves, bags and waterproof cases for portable digital devices, unveils a new exciting accessory line for the Apple iPad: the Dimension Case for Apple's iPad.

image

The Dimension case incorporates several designs elements to allow users to interact with the iPad in the way they want to. From the outset, it looks like a slim and well-crafted jacket for the iPad. The iPad is protected in a frame case at the right side of the jacket. The frame case has openings for all the access points of the iPad. Users can interact with iPad in this jacket setting. However, if users want to be able to carry their protected iPad device around, they can easily separate the frame case from its base cover.

image

When the user is tired of holding the iPad in its framed case, the user can easily and securely attach the frame case to its base cover. If stand viewing is desirable, the case can be converted into a viewing stand once the frame case is attached back to its base cover. The viewing stand can be adjusted to several angles so that the most comfortable viewing position can be attained. If one prefers portrait viewing, the frame case can be attached in portrait orientation for such viewing. Similarly, if one prefers landscape viewing, the case can be attached in landscape orientation for viewing. Again, both portrait and landscape viewing can be adjusted to several viewing angles depending on which one the user most prefers.

image

The Dimension product line has several variations. The variations differ on how the attaching mechanism is implemented. The first introduction is called the Dimension Case V Series. The V series use industry strength Velcro band as the attaching mechanism. The selected Velcro band has been rigorously tested and provides the optimized hook-and-loop combination for attaching and separating the frame case from base cover. In the near future, other series with different attaching mechanism will be introduced.

"The introduction of iPad by Apple provides an excellent opportunity for accessory makers to design innovative products to meet the sophisticate needs of the Apple community. TrendyDigital design has developed several unique and inventive solutions to meet the needs of this community in the past. The introduction of WaterGuard Waterproof case for the iPad has extended the use of the iPad to more challenging environments. We are delighted that both Wall Street Journal and New York Times have taken notice of our product and highlight our products' application to the iPad and eReader device in their recent publication. Concealed Handgun License State Reciprocity List 1.6 For iPhone

Traveling with a handgun? There's an app. for that.

Blackleaf Software LLC, developer of Concealed Handgun License State Reciprocity List, has released the latest update for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users. Until now, travelers with concealed handgun permits have had to do hours, if not days, of tedious research to learn which states recognize their concealed carry licenses; but Concealed Handgun License State Reciprocity List 1.6 puts reciprocity information for all 50 states right at their finger tips. Information is quickly accessible and users can save time and stay on the good side of the law by knowing exactly where they can carry, before they even leave home.

image

These are some of the features that make this a must have app for handgun owners:
(*) The latest state reciprocity changes as of June, 2010 for all 50 states
(*) Easy to use onscreen controls
(*) Easy to read, color coded maps
(*) Reverse reciprocity look up
(*) Internet buttons to learn about handgun laws within each state
(*) Read the second amendment right in the app
(*) Supports portrait and landscape modes

When they open the app, the user simply picks their home state from a list by tapping the screen. The next thing they will see is a complete list of states that recognize concealed handgun licenses issued by their state (reciprocity).

New for this version is the Reverse Reciprocity feature. This button allows users to quickly see a list of states whose concealed handgun permits are recognized by the state they are currently viewing.

While viewing a list, simple onscreen buttons allow the user to see these states on a color coded map, or learn more about a particular state. Portrait and landscape views are supported, to make map viewing easier.

image

It's a gun owner's responsibility to know the laws of any state where they intend to carry their gun. To make this easier, Concealed Handgun License State Reciprocity List 1.6 now gives users a "Website" button which takes them directly to a state's website, where they can learn everything they need to know without leaving the app. With the second amendment to the US constitution contained right in the app, interested users can also learn more about their constitutional right to bear arms.

When asked why he thought there was a need for an app like this in the app store, Dustin Irvin had this to say: "After taking a concealed handgun course my family and I had trouble gathering a list of states and their laws. We travel frequently so this app was exactly what we needed to quickly reference our ability to carry our handguns in states. Then, if we had any questions about specific laws, we could access the website directly within the app to go over specifics of concealed carry with that state."

The developer points out to responsible handgun owners that state reciprocity lists can sometimes change between app updates. It's their responsibility to carefully check all information so they can carry safely, carry legally, and know where they can go.

Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone, iPod touch and iPad
(*) Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later
(*) 2.7 MB

Concealed Handgun License State Reciprocity List 1.6 is $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Reference category. Promo codes are available for qualified reviewers. Please specify the website or blog you represent when making your request.

The Tech Night Owl: So is iPhone Jailbreaking Now a Good Thing?

Up until this week, if you attempted to jailbreak your iPhone - which means unlocking it and making it possible to use apps from sources other than the App Store - you might be regarded as a rogue, maybe even a lawbreaker. You might wonder if Apple might actually show up at your door and seize your iPhone.
