Is iPad Eroding Sales of Apple's Other Products?

Motley Fool's Manikandan Raman says it's almost certain that the soaring popularity of iPad will kill off netbooks, but muses as to whether Apple's new gizmo will hurt sales of its own family of products.

Raman deduces that Steve Jobs may have erred in marketing the iPad as an all-round device that does almost what an iPod and Macbook can do, suggesting that because the iPad can stand in [albeit in many instances not entirely satisfactorily - ED] for be a laptop, an iPhone, an e-reader or a music player -- some users may not feel the necessity to buy other Apple devices. In support of this contention, he cites a survey by Morgan Stanley's internal research team Alphawise and investment bank Piper Jaffray finding that almost 44 percent of iPad owners would not be buying a notebook, and 24 percent said the notebook they wouldn't buy would have been a Macbook, although he also notes that stock analysis firm Trefis has reported that at least so far iPad tablet doesn't appear to be cannibalizing Mac sales.

Survey Finds a Majority of Non-Apple Product Owners Lack Interest in the iPad

Reports by TMCnet Contributor Carolyn J Dawson and eHomeUpgrade's Alexander Grundner note that market research firm Strategy Analytics got some interesting results in their July 2010 Connected Home Devices survey, finding that fewer then 2% of non-Apple product owners would consider buying an iPad, while 18% of existing Apple product owners are considering an iPad purchase, consequently deducing that 90% of iPad sales are to current Apple product owners and that Apple may be "preaching to the converted."

You can find an abstract of Strategy Analysis' "Apple's iPad: Identifying Early Adopters and Intentions to Buy" survey by David Mercer here: http://bit.ly/8YJFLA - in which the author notes that "Our consumer survey finds that early iPad buyers are overwhelmingly existing Apple device customers," and that "the buying intentions of the US population as a whole suggest this is unlikely to change."

iPod Nano Click Wheel To Go Way Of The Dodo?

MacFixIt's Joe Aimonetti says:

September 1 has become a circled date on every Mac nerd's calendar following Apple's announcement of a music-related media event to be held in San Francisco. One of the big announcements, according to analysts, could be an overhauled iPod Nano, sans click wheel.

The click wheel has been one of the most iconic pieces of industrial engineering in technology since its release, but may be relegated to science museums sooner than later.....

The decision to launch a Back To School discount comes as a result of the launch of two new groundbreaking Apple gadgets - the iPad and iPhone 4 - which have dominated the consumer electronics market since April 2010. Uniea was quick to accommodate these fast-breaking trends in the consumer electronics market, and has debuted brand-new designs for both the iPad and iPhone 4 that are remarkably innovative and unique compared to other designs on the market.

image

For the iPad, Uniea has unveiled an iPad version of the popular Omniverse line of cases. The Omniverse iPad case benefits from the Omniverse's memory foam padding, and offers the ultimate in protection from drops - a critical feature for students who will be using their iPad in class in the up-coming school year. In addition, the versatile, stowable tote handles, accommodating front pocket, rugged zippers, and water resistant materials make the Omniverse iPad case the best choice for students on the go.

Uniea is also offering its smaller Omniverse memory foam cases as a stylish, protective alternative to other iPhone 4 shell cases currently on the market. Because of the antenna problems associated with the iPhone 4, many users are choosing to keep their Apple bumper on their iPhone 4 all the time, making it impossible for them to use another shell case along with it. The Omniverse, however, is roomy enough to accommodate the iPhone 4 even with the bumper, while at the same time offering maximum protection from drops, easy access, and a stylish look that can also match the Omniverse iPad case.

In addition to their iPad and iPhone 4 cases, Uniea's Back To School also covers the entire range of their extensive 13" laptop, iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touch cases, as well as the rest of their miscellaneous cases.

Now Download Free and Unlimited Music - Stop Paying For Each Song

ZapTunes, a startup in the field of music industry has just launched a ground breaking service in an attempt to solve the problem of free music downloads. ZapTunes.com is the first website ever to offer free and unlimited music downloads to its members. It claims to have the biggest online music catalog, with more than 8 million songs all in MP3 format and free from any DRM restrictions. And the most important part it is 100% legal, and plays on all MP3 players and iPods.

Free music download has always been a lost cause. Although there are quite a few websites, some free and some paid, that let music fans listen to unlimited music, such as LastFm, Rhapsody, Spotify, Pandora etc, none of these let the user download unlimited music. Yes, one can purchase individually all the tracks they like, but until now there was no service offering unlimited downloading of music. With the launch of ZapTunes.com, it s a different story now. ZapTunes not only lets its members listen to all their favorite tracks online, but for the first time in the Internet s history, users can also download all the songs they want in MP3 format, for a small fixed monthly fee which has been waived off for a limited time as a promotional offer.

"Are you tired of paying for each song you download? Now you can download all the tracks you want for a small monthly fee. If you sign-up right now, you do not even have to pay the monthly fee," said Anand Patel, the spokesman for the company, at a media briefing.

With the rumors of Google jumping into the music industry with Google Music , the music industry has been warming up in the past few quarters. All the big players have been struggling to become the first to offer unlimited downloads of free MP3 songs. ZapTunes has emerged as the winner of this race, with a partnership with most of the record companies.

ZapTunes.com ( http://www.zaptunes.com ) offers unlimited music downloads to its members. It has more than 8 million songs that can be downloaded, with about 1500 songs being added daily. All these downloads are 100% legal and the songs can be played on any player, computer or burned on CDs/DVDs.

Sideways Takes The Coffee Table-Style Book To The iPad

[Press Release]

Sideways recently released the Diana Curran iPad app as a first example of its coffee table publishing platform. The company's technology allows for an easy, cost-effective, templated approach to combining images, text and other multi-media types into an mBook all forms of media merging in one immersive, digital product. Sideways' new platform takes traditional art publications and, without sacrificing artistic value and quality, gives authors and publishers a digital solution to produce their titles as mBooks. Sideways is a software company that transforms publications into immersive experiences on the iPad, iPhone and Touch.

"The coffee table book is the perfect product for the supremely engaging qualities of the iPad as the device lends itself to photography, art, museum exhibition catalogues and the like," said Charles Stack, CEO and co-founder of Sideways. "Our multimedia platform allows for freedom of expression and endless creativity for artists, authors and publishers, all while providing the reader with an immersive experience unlike any other book or e-reader format can deliver."

Curran's gorgeous black-and-white photographs are beautifully showcased within the Diana Curran app. The app displays large images, a thumbnail gallery view, filmstrip overlay navigation and an audio interview with Curran.

Curran is a photographic artist based in Lakewood, Ohio and has won awards for her work from the Cleveland Institute of Art and BayArts, a non-profit arts education organization. In addition to photography, Diana is active in the local arts scene where she teaches workshops and facilitates creative groups. She is co-founder of Full Circle, a support group created for local artists and writers that provides a venue for brainstorming, networking and support.

The Diana Curran app features "The Personal Gallery," Curran's exploration of the transformative power that the museum space has on people visiting the galleries. Curran's process is quick and spontaneous; none of the photographs are posed given the limitations of the museum environment. Curran's study of the immediacy of the connection between viewer and art is a powerful expression of how humans relate to viewing as well as a distinctive exploration of the possibilities of publishing on the iPad.

The Diana Curran app is available in the Books section of the iTunes App Store for $9.99.
