Apple's 64-bit A7 Chip Is Just A 'Marketing Gimmick Says Qualcomm Exec

IDG News Services' Agam Shah reports that Qualcomm’s chief Anand Chandrasekher marketing officer said Tuesday that Apple’s 64-bit A7 processor in the iPhone 5s is more a marketing stunt than a technical enhancement at this point, but although it will provide "zero benefit" to smartphone users right now, there are other reasons to move to 64-bit.

Microsoft Surface 2 Finally Gets Off The Ground With Airline Order

The Register's Neil McAllister says that Microsoft has sold at least 11,000 ARM-powered Surface 2 tablet PCs, which is the number that's been ordered by US passenger carrier Delta Air Lines.

Microsoft released the Windows RT last year, but almost nobody bought it, obliging the company to take a $900 million charge on unsold Surface inventory in July, it being estimated that there were as many as six million units gathering dust in its warehouses. Nearly all sales of Microsoft tablets went to the Intel Core i powered Surface Pro, and even its sales figures weren't stellar.

However, Delta's adoption of the Surface for the cockpit isn't being greeted with enthusiasm by its pilots. Appleinsider's Daniel Eran Dilger reported yesterday (http://goo.gl/WDMouX) that Delta's choosing Surface 2 instead of Apple's iPad for use as an Electronic Flight Bag isn't going down well with the pilots, who "fought hard" against the deal.

"We fought hard for iPad," a pilot working for the airline told AppleInsider, describing the Delta deal as being about money, travel contracts, and Delta's Information Technology staff historically being "in bed" with Microsoft.

Microsoft's Erwin Visser blogs (http://goo.gl/WfLC6P) that Delta’s new electronic flight bags will run Jeppesen’s FliteDeck Pro app built for Windows 8.1, providing pilots with seamless and instant access to real-time information and resources including flight charts and navigation tools. Delta plans to have all cockpits paperless by the end of 2014, which is forecast to reduce fuel and associated costs by $13 million per year, reduce carbon emissions by 26 million pounds and save the equivalent of more than 900 trees each year.

In addition to the cost savings of deploying Windows tablets, Visser maintains that the transition to Surface 2 puts all of the critical information a pilot needs at their fingertips enhancing situational awareness for pilots and improving safety.

McAllister cites Delta saying it spent "years" developing its electronic flight bag software for Surface 2 and that it will continue to work with Microsoft to "pursue technology and software innovations" for its workforce and its fleet. He further notes that It's a safe bet that Delta didn't pay full price for its Surface 2s, given such large purchases and Delta's willingness to help out with Redmond's marketing pitch, but just what kind of discounts Microsoft extended is something we may never know.

PCWorld Magazine Goes Entirely Digital

Hard copy print magazines are rapidly becoming an endangered species.

IDG Consumer & SMB has unveiled the new PCWorld - the first of its all-digital magazines, including its Enhanced Edition, specifically tuned for tablets including iPad, Kindle Fire, and Android. August marked the final print edition of the magazine, and subscriptions to the interactive version have already exceeded 119,000. Based on the latest digital magazine subscriber rankings from the Alliance for Audited Media, PCWorld is number 10 in U.S. consumer magazines – ahead of Star magazine.

The first issue of the PCWorld Enhanced Edition featured a sleeker layout with more than 200 pages of new features. Among these are: an easy-to-read larger typeface, 360-degree interactive photos, animated infographics, and high-definition videos. The cover story focuses on Windows 8.1 and includes a review and a video upgrade tutorial. An article on 3D printing is accompanied by a video explaining how the technology works. In addition to the Enhanced Edition, each issue is also available in Replica, a PDF-like edition.

After PCWorld’s final print issue in July, readers were given the option to transfer their subscriptions to the new digital format, request a refund, or receive Macworld magazine for the remainder of their subscriptions. Of those who responded to the request, 90% chose to switch to the digital edition, pushing the total number of paid digital subscribers to more than 119,000. This demonstrates that PCWorld’s audience welcomes the new highly visual, multimedia format.

The upcoming October issue will have stories on budget laptops for as little as $430, reviews of HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, Lenovo, and Motorola Moto X products, and an animated illustration of how to get control of a cluttered inbox without complex filters and folders. “Since PCWorld launched in 1983, we have maintained a commitment to news, reviews, and information that readers can use to better understand the latest technologies,” said Randall Grilli, consumer and product marketing manager, IDG Consumer & SMB. “Our goal is to make the print-to-digital transition as smooth as possible. We have reinvented PCWorld to appeal to an audience of early adopters of technology who appreciate digital presentation.”
