A Week With iOS 7 And Already Bored
Slate's Farhad Manjoo says "the first time you turn on your phone after installing iOS 7, you'll feel like Charlie Bucket landing in Willy Wonkas chocolate factory. Those colors! Those icons! So much neon! Youve fallen into a world of pure imagination, a place where everything familiar and solid has been flattened, slimmed down, spray painted, and made translucent - but now you're feeling some regret. Was that golden ticket worth it after all?
Manjoo says it's been almost a week since he installed Apple's new mobile operating system on his iPhone 5, and he's puzzled by iOS 7, noting that for a redesign that's so immediately jarring and radical, it comes to feel strangely superficial over time, and that a lot of the redesign feels like aesthetics for aesthetics' sake - the reflection of design chief Jony Ives personal taste for minimalism rather than an effort to improve how the software works.

Smaller Tablets to Get Even More Popular in the Second Half of 2013
The DisplaySearch Blog's Richard Shim notes that tablet PCs with screen sizes smaller than 9 inches are currently forecast to account for 66% of tablet PC shipments for the year but that share is expected to increase starting in the third quarter of the year with new 8-inch tablets and a refresh of the iPad mini in the fourth quarter.
Shim says these new tablet PCs are part of a trend in the tablet PC market that is balancing between differentiation between increasingly larger smartphones and an expansion of the tablet PC opportunity to further drive adoption.
And while the tablet PC market has been dominated by 9-inch and larger tablet PCs, which made up over 60% of total tablet PCs shipped in 2012. In 2013, smaller tablet PCs are expected to make up over 60% of shipments.
Shim says Apple is expected to refresh its iPad mini in the second half of the year, with a 7.9-inch display carrying on the current 1024 x 768 resolution, but the iOS 7 operating system and an A6 processor, in a slimmer design than the current generation. A Retina iPad mini with QXGA (2048 x 1536) is also planned for production in early 2014, and Apple expected to release a new 9.7-inch iPad in the third quarter featuring an A7 processor and iOS 7.

ASUS Lowers Tablet Sales Forecast As iPad Continues To Threaten Windows 8
AppAdvice's Joe White notes that it seems Microsoft's recurrent iPad-bashing TV ads have done little to help ASUS tablet sales, with the company announcing that its PC and tablet sales for the present quarter are expected to be far lower than originally anticipated, and it's decided to cut shipment estimates by 10 percent over the previous quarter.
White suggests that if Microsoft was hoping that Windows 8 was going to help fight off the iPad competition, it would appear that optimism won out over reason in that particular boardroom meeting.

THEMES
With 5 beautiful themes, staying organized has never looked this good.
Though only publicly available today, Morning has already won early accolades from design blogs for its take on the "flat" aesthetic, a recent trend where apps eschew their subtle textures, gradients, and shadows for a more clean presentation of their content. While third-party developers on iOS had begun to warm to this trend, Apple caused something of a sea change last week when it announced a new version of its iOS operating system featuring a radically redesigned interface. While many apps will need to be rethought to match Apple's changes, Morning's creators think it will be right at home when the new operating system ships this fall.
The app is a collaboration between designer Chris Masterson, 18, from Minneapolis, and programmer Jeff Dlouhy, 25, from San Francisco. The duo met while working together at Rdio, a music subscription service based in San Francisco. They left to start Tamper in early 2013, and Morning marks the new studio's first app.

FileMaker Go for iPhone Helps Abbott NW Hosp. Reinvent Stethoscope
For nearly 200 years the stethoscope has reigned as the primary diagnostic tool for physicians. But bedside ultrasound scanning, performed by a physician using a portable ultrasound device, is quickly becoming an essential tool for the efficient diagnosis and treatment of patients within leading-edge hospitals. Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn., is leading this charge.
Watch video at:

The technology improves bedside diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. And, in contrast to the CT scan, x-ray or other imaging tests that expose patients to radiation, portable ultrasound does not have any harmful bio-effects.
Through a custom FileMaker database solution built with help from FileMaker developer Tim Cimbura, Cimbura.com, Inc. using the FileMaker Platform and FileMaker Go for iPhone, the leading Minneapolis hospital's Internal Bedside Medicine Residency Program (IMBUS) has made big strides in the training of its medical residents using bedside ultrasound exams.
Physicians previously used 5x7 index cards to record results. If the cards were lost or misplaced, the information from the days studies sometimes went unrecorded. But now, they simply use FileMaker Go for iPhone to access an IMBUS tracking application hosted by FileMaker Server software. Because most of the hospitals physicians also use iPhone as a pager, it is always handy. And with a few taps, they can record the results of each exam, which are sent wirelessly to the FileMaker Server via Abbott Northwesterns campus-wide network.
The FileMaker IMBUS solution:
Ensures that physicians are trained, evaluated and credentialed in the most rigorous fashion possible
Records bedside ultrasound exam results in real time
Paves the way for introducing a vital new examination tool into general practice for improved patient care
"We considered Microsoft Access and a set of Excel spreadsheets, but that approach was not nearly as intuitive or scalable. FileMaker offered very easy integration with iPhone. Also, we previously had good experience with FileMaker for our physical exam database in the residency program. Based on that success, we felt FileMaker was the best choice for IMBUS," says Dr. David Tierney, director of IMBUS Program, Abbott Northwestern Hospital's Internal Medicine Residency Program
