Apple's Victory Is Complete

"Apple's victory is complete," saysComputerworld blogger Jonny Evans. "The company has set the bar for PC and mobile device design, and has influenced the design process across the entire technology industry. Apple has defined the technology industry.

Evans notes that Apple's MacBook range has redefined the laptop computer form factor paradigm, and Apple has also defined mobile device design - most tablets seeming incredibly similar in appearance to an iPad.

While growing from a 2/3% player in the PC business on a global basis to become a c.10% player, Apple also managed to set the bar for smartphone development with the iPhone, a root and branch improvement on anything that had come before, transforming itself from a much mocked niche player into the industry's most dominant creative force as a result and proving the value of its design-centric business plan, with the caveat that design isn't just about look and feel, but about what happens under the hood.

Requiem for Classic iOS

Tech.Pinions' Steven Aquino says that in the weeks following the WWDC keynote, much has been written about iOS 7's redesigned user interface. The word that keeps coming up to describe the changes is polarizing. Some people like it, whereas others hate it; there seems to be no middle ground. However, Aquino thinks it's fair to say that everyone can agree that iOS was long overdue for a facelift, although a part of him is genuinely sad to be losing the "classic", Forstall-era iOS, and the arrival of iOS 7 this fall will truly mark the end of an era.

However, while he feels wistful towards the "classic" design, it looks and feels old, reminding him that iOS needed a change, and makes him even more excited for iOS 7.

iPad 4 vs Nexus 10 vs Surface Pro Head To Head Review

The Inquirer's Lee Bell nores that in 2012 Amazon and Google undercut the iPad, creating their cheaper and smaller Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 devices. Competition heated up even more when Microsoft announced its Surface Pro Windows 8 tablet, and then again when Google launched its first premier Android tablet, the Nexus 10. Apple responded by releasing upgraded versions of its latest iPad, making 2013's battle for tablet sales one of the most interesting so far.
However, with the evident lack of interest in Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system and Google's flagship Nexus 10 tablet beginning to show its age, The Inquirer couldn't resist a chance to check whether Apple really needs to be concerned about its competition.

Lee observes that Apple devices have long been known for their high-end design and finish, so any tablet maker attempting to take on the iPad 4 is going to have a tough time competing with the firm's high design standards. However, it's apparent that both Samsung and Microsoft have taken pains to ensure that the appearance of their respective tablets can compete with that of the iPad.

So can they? I won't be a spoiler here. You can check out the shootout results at:

Apple and Microsoft: The New Tech Coalition

Macworld UK's David Price notes that as iOS 7 - in which Siri search queries will be handled by Microsoft's Bing engine - nears its autumn launch date, Microsoft has been discussing the challenges and benefits of working with Apple, hthat the former (perceived) deadly rivals appear to have forged a new alliance against their common foe, Google.

Price cites an interview with The Verge, in which Microsoft's Bing team said that working with Apple to create Bing-powered search results in Safari and in Siri in iOS 7 wasn't easy. But it's clear that both Apple and Microsoft are committed to their new alliance against Google's dominance of the search arena - at least for now, observing that the last time Apple and Microsoft came together for a big team-up - at the famous Macworld Boston keynote speech in 1997, where a video-linked Bill Gates towered over Steve Jobs as the pair announced that Office would appear on Macs for five years, while Internet Explorer would be the default browser on Macs - it was felt that Apple came out looking like the junior partner. But this time it feels very much like Microsoft is the Liberal Democrats to Apple's Conservative Party in the new tech coalition.

Dutch Steve Jobs iPad Schools Seek to Transform Education

Die Spiegel notes that Apple CEO Steve Jobs upended the computer industry, the music industry and the world of mobile phones, and his next plan was to bring radical change to schools and textbook publishers, but he died of cancer before he could do it. Now the Netherlands will fulfill Jobs's vision with the launch of 11 new "Steve Jobs Schools" in August with Amsterdam among the cities that will be hosting such a facility. Some 1,000 children aged four to 12 will attend the schools, without notebooks, books or backpacks. Each of them, however, will have his or her own iPad.

There will be no blackboards, chalk or classrooms, homeroom teachers, formal classes, lesson plans, seating charts, pens, teachers teaching from the front of the room, schedules, parent-teacher meetings, grades, recess bells, fixed school days and school vacations. If a child would rather play on his or her iPad instead of learning, it'll be okay. And the children will choose what they wish to learn based on what they happen to be curious about.
