TSMC Job Fair In NY Fuels Rumors Of New US Chip Fab For Apple
Appleinsider's Neil Hughes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. recently held a job fair in upstate New York, further fueling speculation that the chipmaker is planning to open a chip fabrication plant in the area to build mobile processors for Apple. Hughes cites Jagadish Iyer of Piper Jaffray in a note to investors saying TSMC's recruitment was heavily centered around the Fishkill, N.Y., area, where IBM has facilities working on advanced chip technology using sub-20-nanometer processes, and that he believes that a key reason for such a move would be Apple, which finally inked a deal with TSMC in June to begin building mobile chips in 2014, which should allow it to reduce reliance on rival Samsung, which currently builds Apple's A-series chips for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV at Austin, Texas.

iPad Sales Hit All-time Low - Trendforce Survey
EETimes India reports that the Apple iPad's share of the global tablet market fell to its lowest point in history during the second quarter of 2013, according to market analyst TrendForce, with Apple as the largest tablet supplier seeing its shipment volume drop to 1.46 crore units in second quarter from first quarter's 1.95 crore units -- iPad sales plummeting more than 25 per cent sequentially from the 1.95 crore iPads sold during the March quarter. "On top of the quarterly drop as high as 25 per cent, its market share has dropped to 35.5 per cent, the new historical low," TrendForce said.

Microsoft Surface Tablet Revenue Just $853m Microsoft Reveals
SlashGear's Chris Davies reports that Microsoft made a paltry $853m in revenue from Surface tablets in its 2013 fiscal year, a disappointing figure that failed to even cover the company's $900m inventory adjustment charge for the slow selling Surface RT. The figures, confirmed in Microsoft's most recent 10K filing, paint an underwhelming picture of the Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets, though doesnt specify exactly how many units have been sold.
Davies cites rumor scuttlebutt that a new range of second-gen Surface tablets will still run either Windows RT or Windows 8, with a broader choice of processors and possibly also LTE-equipped versions, along with 7-inch versions to challenge the Nexus 7 and iPad mini.
