June Tablet Update: iPad Usage Share Surpasses 84%

Chitika Insights reports that since their last study on the tablet market, Apple iPad users’ share of U.S. and Canadian tablet Web traffic has increased by nearly two percentage points, from 82.4% in May 2013, to 84.3% in June 2013 – now the iPad’s highest share since the beginning of 2013. This marks the second consecutive month of iPad usage share gains. Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Samsung’s Galaxy Tablet families remained in second and third place, respectively.

To determine the distribution of Web usage among tablet devices for the month of June 2013, Chitika Insights sampled tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian tablet online ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network. The data used within the most recent analysis was drawn across the time frame of June 15 to June 21, 2013, and data for previous months was collected from Chitika Insights’ April and May tablet market share reports, respectively.

"While there are a number of players in the tablet marketplace, Apple clearly dominates the market," Chitika comments, "further evidenced by analyst shipment estimates. As seen in the graph above, the iPad’s usage share advantage over its closest competitors is now nearly 80%. Most other players in the market exhibited month-over-month declines, with one notable exception being Barnes & Noble’s Nook. The Web traffic share generated by Nook users grew by 37% over what was observed in May 2013. The increase may be due to the device family’s significant price drop beginning in mid-June. Google Nexus’ month-to-month decline in Web usage may be due to some issues users have been experiencing with older Nexus 7 models, along with increasing interest in the expected release of a new Nexus tablet. Prices and a July 31 release date for that upcoming model leaked earlier this month, and a successful launch could change the dynamics of the domestic tablet landscape."

Low-Cost iPad mini Expected To Debut Alongside Retina Model In 2014

Appleinsider's Neil Hughes reports that according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a research note this week, both an iPad mini with Retina display and an even lower-priced iPad mini are said to be in the works at Apple, athough neither product is expected to debut until next year.

Indeed, Mr. Kuo, who has a strong track record for accuracy in predicting Apple product rollouts doesn't expect Apple to launch any new iPad mini models this year, looking to March or April of next year as the most likely launch window for two new iPad mini models, and also doesn't anticipate that the low-cost iPad mini will be a whole lot cheaper than the current model, which starts at $329, says Hughes.

Kuo thinks the Retina display iPad mini delay is due to engineering issues, specifically that a 7.9-inch Retina display reportedly is too power hungry for the battery capacity possible inside the iPad mini's case, which has required Apple to redesign all components in an effort to improve power efficiency.

However, a more immediate prospect for iPad fans is that Mr. Kuo's sources are saying that a fifth-generation full-size iPad is coming in early September, expected to feature a thinner and lighter design with a narrow bezel, a la the current iPad mini.

Apple to Choose Samsung Display Over AUO as LCD Supplier for iPad Mini 2 Panels

Hyung-soo Lee and Bo-kyung Moon, of Korea's ETNews report that Apple has dropped Taiwanese display supplier AUO from its list of suppliers for the iPad mini 2. They note that AUO has supplied LCD panels for the iPad mini along with LG Display and Sharp, but could not secure orders from Apple since it had failed to develop an high penetration LCD for iPad Mini 2.

Lee and Moon also say industry insiders are interested in whether Samsung Display can replace AUO. LG Display has already secured an order from Apple, they report, adding that Sharp seems to have had smooth sailing in getting approval from Apple as a supplier for the iPad mini 2 despite some product quality problems, because it is the only supplier of oxide semiconductor LCD panels. Oxide semiconductor LCD has an advantage of saving electricity.

The reporters observe that Apple appears to be planning to use oxide semiconductor LCDs in the iPad mini 2 despite initial low production yield, because of their power-saving electricity. Last year, AUO started to supply panels to Apple thanks to its price competitiveness, but Lee and moon say it wasn't not convince Apple to give it a slice of the iPad mini2 OEN pie becauses it failed to meet supply deadlines or to develop an LCD with high penetration rate.

Also, thay obsercve that improved relations between Samsung Display and Apple seems to be another factor for AOU being dropped. “Samsung Display is known to have developed an LCD sample for iPad mini 2. The company may be able to secure more order than Sharp did, if it can stabilize production yields”, an unnamed source from the LCD industry is cited commenting.

iPad Generation Will Have A Smaller Vocabulary, Study Claims

The Telegraph's Hayley Dixon notes that human brains are hardwired to learn new words heard when others use them in conversation, but as children increasingly learn through electronic devices instead of listening to others they not longer get the opportunity to hear a wide range of words being spoken. Consequently expert opinion contends that the oral tradition of passing on knowledge is being eroded, with all generations spending too long staring at screens, citing Marco Catani, of the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, telling the Daily Mail that increasingly people who don't have time to communicate and children turn to the Internet, iPhones, mobile phones and tablet computers which they all have access to.
But "These are visual rather than auditory, so it is likely that they will end up with a lower average number of words than previous generations,” Catani said.

80 Percent Of Reduced iPad Shipments Attributable To Channel Inventory Decline

With rumors of the forthcoming iPad 5 having been rife for months, is it any wonder that sales of the iPad 4 have been flagging a bit this summer? However, Appleinsider's Neil Hughes also notes that Apple drew down its iPad channel inventory by 1.9 million units during the June quarter, which accounted for the lion's share of the year-over-year decrease the company reported in iPad shipments in its financials conference call on Tuesday.

Another point in year-over-year metrics; while this was the first instance of June quarter iPad sales declining, it is also the first year that there has been no new iPad model introduction in late winter or spring, with the last new model release having been October 23, 2012.

Wireless CapTel By Sprint Powered By Raketu Lets iOS Device Users Read Mobile Conversations With The Aid Of Captions

Sprint has announced the availability of Wireless CapTel by Sprint powered by Raketu, for all iOS-powered devices. The new app increases accessibility of mobile communications for individuals with hearing loss.

Wireless CapTel by Sprint allows users to read conversations with real-time word-for-word captions on their wireless phones. Wireless CapTel by Sprint users place a call in the same way they would when using a traditional phone - by dialing the number directly on the device. The application then connects callers directly to the CapTel service when the phone is dialed. When the receiving party answers, callers can listen to what the other person is saying and also read captions on the phone's display screen.

The application can be downloaded on iOS devices from the Apple App Store or iTunes for free with an Everything Data plan. Sprint currently provides Wireless CapTel on select Android devices.

Wireless CapTel calls are automatically routed through a captioning service. Users simply give friends, family, and other contacts their specialized Wireless CapTel by Sprint phone number to receive captions on every call. For more information about the service, go to: http://www.sprintcaptel.com

"Sprint Relay is pleased to add another groundbreaking solution to its portfolio – and bring to the market a service that improves our customers' experience," says Mike Ellis, director-Sprint Relay.

The Wireless CapTel by Sprint application is another service by Sprint for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The company recently marked an industry first with the Sprint Relay ID pack - a bundle of applications, links, tips, icons and widgets enabling a more robust wireless experience for those with hearing loss. The bundle includes voice mail transcripts, visual and vibrating alerts, and readable captions, all available in a single download. The bundle marks the first time a carrier has developed multiple applications in one package for those who are hard-of-hearing.

CapTel services are available as a component of Sprint's array of Relay services. Designed for people who are hard-of-hearing, CapTel users place a call in the same way they would when using any other phone – by dialing the number directly on a special Captioned Telephone. The phone connects callers to the CapTel service as the number is dialed. When the other person answers, callers can listen to what the other person says while reading captions on the phone's display screen to catch words that may be missed. Captions appear nearly simultaneously with spoken words.

The Wireless CapTel by Sprint application is powered by Raketu technology. Since 2006, Raketu Communications Inc. has been developing leading edge applications that provide communications services for customers and businesses, across mobile, tablet, desktop and laptop devices. Raketu has developed and released many first-to-market applications, including mobile video calling, cloud based video calling, and server-less peer-to-peer communications. Raketu currently has users in over 150 countries around the world. For more information, visit the company's website at:
http://www.Raketu.com

Sprint is the largest and most technologically advanced Telecommunications Relay Service provider in the nation with more than 20 years of experience in providing relay services to persons who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or deaf-blind or have a speech disability to communicate with hearing persons on the phone. Sprint's experience in this field assures Sprint Relay users receive quality service regardless of the type of relay service they are using. Sprint's relay service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no restrictions on the number of calls placed or call length. For more information, visit:
