128GB Apple iPad A Savvy Response to Surface Pro
Wired's Christina Bonnington characterizes Apple's surprise Tueday announcement of a 128 GB fourth-generation iPad as a somewhat uncharacteristic direct response to a competitor, appearing to be in response to the Microsoft Surface Pro, with Apple's high capacity model to begin shipping February 5th, four days before Surface Pro goes on sale, citing IDC research director Tom Mainelli, who believes 2013 will be a big year for tablets in business, observing that it was a pretty savvy move by Apple.
Ms. Bonnington also quotes Forrester analyst Charles Golvin suggesting that the higher capacity iPad could also end up luring some potential MacBook Air buyers into opting for the lighter tablet instead.
Strategically, the more expensive iPad model will raise Apple's ASP (average selling price) for the iPad, which has diminished since the cheaper iPad mini launched last fall, which should be attractive to stock analysts.

128GB Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet PC Really Has Only 83GB Free Capacity, The 64GB Model Only 23GB
Engadget's Ben Gilbert notes that anyone anticipating the purchase of the 64GB, $899 Microsoft Surface Pro next week should temper their storage expectations, since the base model Pro actually only allots 23GB of that space for use, while the $100 more expensive ($999) 128GB version offers a real-world 83GB, but it gives up 45GB of space to the full Windows 8 operating system and various included applications, confirmed by a Microsoft statement affirming that:
"The 128 GB version of Surface Pro has 83 GB of free storage out of the box. The 64GB version of Surface Pro has 23GB of free storage out of the box. Of course, Surface Pro has a USB 3.0 port for connectivity with almost limitless storage options, including external hard drives and USB flash drives. Surface also comes pre-loaded with SkyDrive, allowing you to store up to 7GB of content in the Cloud for free. The device also includes a microSDXC card slot that lets you store up to 64GB of additional content to your device. Customers can also free up additional storage space by creating a backup bootable USB and deleting the recovery partition."
As for the consumer-targeted Surface RT, its nominally 32GB version provides only about 16GB of system data storage, while its 64GB version leaves some 46GB available for user files.
By contrast, the much more compact iOS allows that 32GB and 64GB iPad/iPad mini to provide roughly 28.6GB and 57.2GB free capacity respectively for user files.

Did Apple Accidentally Reveal its new iPad Upgrade Roadmap Strategy?
Forbes' Louis Bedigian says that in 2012, Apple created a vicious cycle when it decided to release the fourth-generation iPad roughly seven months after the third-generation model arrived at retail - a decision that surprised many tech enthusiasts, but that he maintains was entirely necessary because without the iPad 4, Apple would've had to rearrange its product lineup for 2013, and that now the company could feasibly sit tight with the status quo and wait to release the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 in November 2013, while had Apple ad only released the iPad mini last fall, it would've likely upgraded the 10-inch model in the spring - or so he had thought.
Now he's not so sure, musing that it now seems that Apple may be implementing another strategy, and instead of releasing sensible upgrades at key times during the year (as it has with the iPhone), Apple is determined to tweak the iPad as frequently as possible with minor upgrades like this week's addition of a 128 GB model.

RIM PlayBook Bests New iPad in UK Channel Sales - Analyst
ChannelRegister's Paul Kunert reports that RIM's once little-loved BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is outselling the latest iPad in the U.K.'s IT distribution channel, according to an analyst, with Apple accounting for just a quarter sales in the last two months of 2012 according to IT distribution watcher Context estimates, which notes that the quality of many other-brand tablets is as good as the iPad but at half the price, and RIM now has a decent software ecosystem too, having come a long way in a year."

What's New in iOS 6.1: Some Features, Lots of Security
FairerPlatform reports that Apple's iOS 6.1 Update delivers more LTE carrier support in more places, the ability to purchase movie tickets (Fandango) using Siri and individual song downloads via iTunes Match and iCloud, but thats just the shiny front end, noting that among new features not afforded a bullet point by Apple are new lock screen music controls, which are cleaner and make using this functionality easier, and patches for a range of vulnerabilities, including a memory corruption issue in WebKit (Safari) that could lead to arbitrary code execution, which could net an attacker control of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

LG Display Reducing Capacity Utilization Due To Apple 9.7-inch iPad Order Cuts
Digitimes' Rebecca Kuo and Alex Wolfgram say that LG Display has reportedly reduced the capacity utilization rate at its P9 factory to roughly 60% as a result of a large reduction of 9.7-inch iPad panel orders from Apple, according to industry insider sources due to Apple cutting shipments for its 9.7-inch iPad products in the first quarter of 2013 to as low as six million units, down from an originally projected 12-15 million units, due to increasing popularity among consumers for the iPad mini.
