Replacing Your Mac With An iPad: One Take On Apps And Hardware Youll Need
Can the iPad really take the place of a Mac? asks Cult of Macs Charlie Sorrel. Can an iPad really replace a proper computer? Can a ten-inch, 128GB tablet do the work of an eleven-inch 128GB MacBook Air? The answer is yes. Kinda. If your work involves having two windows sitting permanently open side-by-side, then the iPad might not be for you (although you might consider whether you need both windows open together).
For most other regular workaday work type work, though. the iPad is ideal. And heres our guide to replacing your Mac with an iPad. Specifically a Retina iPad, but you might even manage with a mini.
Editors Note: Having made a partial transition myself, one comment is that everyones needs and tastes in software and hardware support are likely to be different. Ed.

Usage Share for Android Tablets Rises in North America
Chitika Insights January Tablet Update notes that during the fourth quarter of 2012, tablet sales saw 75.3% year-over-year growth, according to the latest research figures from IDC, underscoring the trend that tablet and mobile devices are now driving growth in personal computing. Similar figures have been reported by BI Intelligence, which projects tablet sales to exceed PC sales by 2015 – making the tablet industry a $100+ billion market.

To determine the current distribution of Web usage among leading tablet devices following the holiday season, Chitika Insights sampled U.S. and Canadian tablet ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network. The data used to compile current market share (for the Tablet Usage Share bar chart) was drawn across the time range of January 19th to January 25th 2013. The historical data set utilized for the latter line graph was gathered from December 1st 2012 to January 27th 2013.
Similar to statistics reported by Localytics, Chitika Insights observed a strong presence of Kindle Fire usage in the Android tablet market following the holiday season. The share of North American tablet traffic coming from users of Kindle Fire tablets grew from 4.88 impressions per 100 iPad impressions (as reported in December) to 9.48 impressions, or 7.7% of the market as a whole. Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy, and Barnes & Nobile Nook tablets also saw smaller gains this past month, with all three now constituting a combined 6.7% of North American tablet Web traffic.
As observed in Chitikas post-holiday mobile device report, it appears that Christmas was the point at which tablet usage shares dramatically shifted. There, they measured Kindle Fire usage share within their network at 7.51%, and it has remained relatively the same at 7.7% one month later. Similarly, the iPad was at 79% following the holiday season, and has recovered slightly to 81%.
The iPad-focused line graph accompanying this article illustrates that usage share numbers in January are in line with the predictions contained in the earlier report. For additional details of the model and analysis Chitika used for those predictions. See the accompanying Chitika white paper here:

Kindle Fire Drives US Android Tablet Dominance
The United States is dominating the Android tablet race, according to market analyst firm Localytics, with Amazons Kindle Fire family of tablets leading the way. A full 59% of all Android tablets seen by apps with Localytics integrated are based in the US, and over half of those are Kindle Fires or Kindle Fire HDs.
In fact, Localytics notes in a blog that outside of the United States, the Kindle Fire practically doesnt exist – 89% of Amazons family of tablets live in America, with most of the rest in Great Britain. After those two, no other country has even one percent of worldwide Kindle Fires.

While Amazons issues achieving international distribution of their hardware have been widely reported, it is interesting to note that should they get the distribution part right, their US success suggests they could quickly dominate the Android tablet market worldwide. Even in Canada, which is often the first non-US country to receive an American companys products, the Kindle Fire is currently unavailable.
That may be changing, however; at an event launching the Kindle Paperwhite to Canada, Localytics cites Amazons VP in charge of the Kindle noting that they are working hard to launch the Fire lineup worldwide, which should provide some incentive for Android tablet developers who hope that the devices can achieve the kind of market penetration they have in the US.

Logitech Introduces Ultrathin Keyboard mini, The Other Half to Your iPad mini
Logitech on Tuesday introduced the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard mini, a slim protective keyboard cover designed to enhance the iPad mini experience. The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard mini helps you make the most of everything you do on your iPad mini – from enjoying apps, movies and photos to giving you a comfortable typing experience – while keeping your tablets thin, light and sleek style.

We are excited to bring the award-winning Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover design recognized across the industry as the best mobile keyboard for iPad to the iPad mini, says Alexis Richard, director of brand development for tablet accessories. Think of it as the other half of your iPad mini. Its clever seven-inch design fits perfectly with the iPad mini while offering full-size keys for easy typing, saving your screen space for content.

Attaching securely with the click of powerful integrated magnets, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard mini has a slim aluminum cover that matches the iPad mini and brings durable protection to it with minimal weight. When youre ready to use it, flip the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard mini around to reveal its built-in Bluetooth EasyType keyboard, offering a traditional typing layout in a small seven-inch form factor, plus iPad mini function shortcut keys for the commands you use most often, such as copy and paste. It also doubles as a hands-free view stand so you can use your iPad mini without having to hold it.

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard mini has an instant On/Off feature, which means your iPad mini automatically wakes up when you open the cover and switches to standby when you close it. The keyboard itself has a three-month battery life (based on usage of two hours per day) so you can spend more time exploring your new tablet and less time worrying about your keyboard losing power.
The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard mini is expected to be available in the U.S. and Europe beginning in February 2013, for a suggested retail price of $79.99. For more information please visit:

BlackBerry Z10 Released In Canada - Delayed March Launch In U.S.
Canadians have generally been proud of the former Research In Motion - now BlackBerry's success as a global leader in the IT sector, and saddened by it's recent decline, albeit most not not saddened enough to choose a BlackBerry over an iPhone or Android device. However, now that BlackBerry has an OS, hardware, and an app infrastructure capable of competing, many Canadians are evidently hoping that BlackBerry can stage a comeback, and willing to take a chance on the Waterloo. Ontario firm's product again.
In a CTV News online poll asking Which smartphone is on your wish list? 34 percent of repondents favoured BlackBerry. to 21 percent for iPhone and 20 percent for Android.
CTVNews.ca Staff report that BlackBerry putative users got their chance to finally get their hands on the long-awaited BlackBerry 10 OS Tuesday as the companys latest smartphone - the BlackBerry Z10 hit Canadian store shelves for pre-order.
Blackberry President and CEO Thorsten Heins told the finance site BNN on Tuesday that early sales in the United Kingdom and pre-registration results in Canada are encouraging.
Heins also affirmed that the next generation of BlackBerry smartphones is already in the research and development phase, with more affordable devices set to be released later this year.
The new BB10 operating system and two smartphones - the Z10 which has a touchpad, and the Q10, which has a physical keyboard - were unveiled last week. The Z10 is expected to be available in the U.S. in March, while the Q10's release is not expected until April.
