AUTOMOBILE Magazine's iPad Edition Goes Live; January and February Issues Available for Download

AUTOMOBILE Magazine has launched its new iPad edition, making its nationally recognized, award-winning content available to download on Apple's tablet at the App Store.

image

Beginning with the release of both the complimentary January and regularly priced February issues, the brand's easy-to-navigate app incorporates a highly intuitive design that gives readers an enhanced AUTOMOBILE Magazine experience, complete with interactive content, photo galleries, integrated video and audio commentary, as well as in-depth automobile news and reviews not found in the print edition. AUTOMOBILE for iPad allows the editors to better relay the special sense of adventure the magazine is already famous for by providing even more content.

"This is not AUTOMOBILE Magazine reinvented for the iPad; rather, we worked to incorporate the content our readers desired," explains AUTOMOBILE Magazine President and Editor-in-Chief, Jean Jennings. "We are an experiential publication; the iPad is a medium that allows us to better deliver our experiences to our readers."

Featuring the always compelling stories and vibrant photographic content readers are familiar with from the print version, AUTOMOBILE Magazine's iPad application goes a step further, allowing users to go deeper into each story, to see and hear things they may not otherwise be able to experience, and by letting reporters provide their on-location experiences and point of view.

Whether viewing photos taken during a family road trip in Four Seasons test cars, or getting to watch the behind-the-scenes adventures involved in driving a 1200-hp Bugatti at speed across the Spanish countryside, the new iPad version of the magazine will deliver never-before-seen content usually reserved for exclusive conversations with the editorial staff of AUTOMOBILE Magazine.

The iPad version of the magazine marries the best of both print and web, adding additional features unique to the iPad and integrating them seamlessly into an all-new product that allows readers to dive deeper into the automotive lifestyle.

Over the next few months, AUTOMOBILE Magazine will continue to refine its iPad edition and roll out several iPad-only features, including an expanded Four Seasons test section with interactive photo, video and map updates as well as testimonials from editors who are living with these cars over the course of a year.

The iPad edition will also feature a larger Auctions section, complete with a black book guide to the world's most prominent auctions including reviews of where to stay and how to get to an event. The magazine will also incorporate additional design focus from AUTOMOBILE's design experts explaining both automotive design technique and analysis.

"Twenty-five years ago, we broke the mold with the launch of AUTOMOBILE Magazine. Now with this app, we feel that we are on the brink of doing it again," says Jennings. "The app allows readers to do more than just click a few buttons to hear a car rev up its engine. Instead, it is a spontaneous behind-the-scenes look at story telling at its best, with spectacular writers, fabulous photography and once-in-a-lifetime introductions to some of the most legendary people in the industry. It lets you experience the adventure with us, every step of the way."

Over the course of 25 years AUTOMOBILE Magazine has won more writing, photography, and design awards than any other car magazine, and stands as the only car magazine to have won a National Magazine Award. To find out more about the iPad app, and why this release represents a paradigm shift for the magazine, please click here to view a video presentation from AUTOMOBILE Magazine President and Editor-in-Chief, Jean Jennings:

The iPad edition of the AUTOMOBILE Magazine app is available to download for ($3.99) from the App Store. The print edition of the February issue will arrive on newsstands on January 4. The January issue is free.

For nearly 25 years, AUTOMOBILE Magazine has set the standard for automotive journalism, maintaining its devotion to auto adventure and an editorial approach that emphasizes "No boring cars!"

Intel's Atom Chip: Can It Take On ARM?

Computerworld's Matt Hamblen says Intel hopes to make a big splash at the Consumer Electronics Show on Jan. 6 with its Atom chips featured inside a variety of tablet computers and netbooks, but the chips are not expected to appear in smartphones until the last half of 2011.

Hamblen notes that the smartphone world and more recently the tablet computing world (including Apple's iPad and Samsung's Galaxy Tab) as well have been heavily dominated by chips running the ARM architecture, meaning Intel's Atom is likely to face an uphill battle.

Israel's iPad Doctors: Hospital Equips Medical Staff With iPads

Mayanei Hayeshua Medical Center (MYMC) at Bnei Brak is the first Israeli hospital to give iPad technology to its doctors, for use both on and off-site. Medical staff can now check patient records, test results, hi-resolution X-rays and CT scans, report on patient progress and plan ongoing treatment using the latest hand-held computers.

MYMC has embraced this latest and most desirable technology by investing in the latest iPad version 4.2, customized for use in Hebrew. This allows clinicians instant touch-screen access to patient records and medical information via secure password-protected internet. MYMC's IT team have programmed the Apple iPad to interact with the Microsoft Chameleon program used by the hospital.

Dr. Yoram Liwer, CEO of Mayanei Hayeshua, explains: "The picture quality on the iPad screen enables our doctors to check high-resolution x-ray and scan images, either on the wards or from outside the hospital, and to diagnose and prescribe treatment immediately at any time. The iPad is recognized today as a leading medical tool, bringing many benefits to patients and hospital staff.

"A recent patient survey confirmed the importance of enabling doctors to check the status of patients and direct their treatment immediately, within or outside the hospital - it was ranked 8.6 out of 10 by the patients we interviewed. That is why we are using the latest devices and healthcare technology to help revolutionize patient care at our hospital, which is already known as one of the most progressive hospitals in Israel and internationally."

Dr. Nir Cohen, head of Mayanei Hayeshua's Orthopaedic Surgery Department, explains the clinical benefits of using the iPad: "As head of the department, even working late at night from home, I can now give direction to medical staff during operations using my iPad, and check that vital treatment records have been entered correctly into the hospital system. This can help to speed up surgical procedures, reducing the time spent under anaesthetic, to the benefit of patients."

The Mayanei HaYeshua Medical Center ('Sources of Deliverance') provides general and specialist medical services according to Jewish law and the highest ethical standards.

Founded in 1990, treating more than 100,000 patients each year, MYMC plans to build a new much-needed hospitalization wing in the near future, with underground wards for use in times of national emergency.

Popular Science Picks Apple iPad As Top Tablet

Popular Science has picked the iPad as the top tablet in the Gadgets category of its Best Of What's New 2010 Innovation Of The Year Grand Awards roundup, noting that after years of companies trying to cram a computer into a tablet the resulting boxes have been too heavy, the software too sparse, the screen too small Apple made what everyone wanted: a sleek device with a gorgeous screen and a dead- simple interface that makes you want to sit back and play.

10 reasons Why TechRepublic's Debra Littlejohn Shinder's Dumping The iPad for Samsung's Galaxy Tab

TechRepublic's Debra Littlejohn Shinder has decided to dump the iPad for the Galaxy Tab, and explains why as a guest columnist in Larry Dignan's ZNet slot.

Shinder says she bought an iPad because she wanted a light, thin tablet she could easily use out on the patio, while riding as a passenger in a car, while lying in bed, or while sitting on the sofa in front of the TV, but has had a love/hate relationship with the iPad from the beginning, enjoying the form factor and the ease of connecting to a network, but says she hates the lack of storage expansion, its frustrating inability to display Flash-based Web sites, and the difficulty of entering text on its keyboard, plus finding it just a tad heavier and bulkier than she'd really prefer. And most of all, Shindler says she hates Apple's rigid control over what apps she can install.

A Windows loyalist from way back, Shinder has decided to dump the iPad for the Tab, and cites are 10 reasons why.

Sideways Introduces Patent-Pending Buddy Reading Technology with Beatrix Potter's Classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit for iOS

Sideways, a software company that transforms books, magazines and other publications into immersive experiences on mobile devices, today announced its patent-pending Buddy Reading technology with a version of Beatrix Potter's classic in Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition for the iPad, iPhone and Touch. Taking advantage of Apple's new Game Center technology, Buddy Edition allows two people to remotely read aloud together. Now a parent on a business trip can read a bedtime story in real-time to a child at home with both able to interact with the digital book and each other across different devices.

The Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition app also features Sideways' Anigraphic Engine, which allows authors to easily add directorial commands to their text, graphics and audio. The Anigraphic Engine enables the development of animated books with sound effects and voice over narration. With this technology, an animated book can now be envisioned, designed and built without custom software development.

In addition to Buddy Reading, Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition enhances the classic story in the following ways:
• Children can read the book on their own or choose the "Read To Me" option.
• A "Learn To Read" function allows children to touch objects and see and hear the words.
• Users can interact with the pictures; some initiate sounds when touched while others can be moved from the screen. For example, children can help the bunnies fill their baskets with berries.
• A coloring book featuring the line drawings from Beatrix Potter's first version of the book is included in the Sideways application enabling children to digitally color a favorite drawing and then share it electronically with friends and relatives.

"Nothing can take the place of a parent reading a bedtime story to a child. Now with the Buddy Reading technology, it's possible for traveling parents to keep that intimate, precious connection to their children at home, no matter the distance," says Charles Stack, CEO and co-founder of Sideways. "The new generation of multi-media devices offers great ways of telling classic stories. We've taken the century-old delight experienced when reading Peter Rabbit and respectfully extended it using new technology, which can be efficiently applied to books new and old."

Peter Rabbit: Buddy Edition is now available in the iTunes App Store for $1.99. A demo of the Buddy Reading technology can be found on YouTube at:
