Anobit Says Deal With Apple Finalized

Y-Net News's Meir Orbach reports that Anobit's executive management gathered the startup cpmpany's employees at a Herzliya hotel on Tuesday morning to inform them that they are now working for Apple, which is set to inaugurate its first development center outside US at Haifa's Scientific Industries Center, due to its proximity to Technion

Orbach says talks between Anobit and Apple over an estimated $400-$500 million deal were revealed by Calcalist last week, and that Anobit develops a chip - already incorporated into Apple's flagship products such as the iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air - that enhances the performance of flash memory using unique data signal processing (DSP) technology, and that the chip may as much as double the memory volume in new iPads and MacBooks.

Make The Most Of iOS 5's Hidden Features On The iPad

APCMag's Dan Warne notes that whileiOS 5 has a bundle of great headline features, it also packs in a few extremely useful ones that you might not even notice.

There is a thumb-friendly split keyboard for your iPad, plus custom autotext shortcuts, which can be extremely useful for saving repetitive typing of things you often add in to emails, instant message chats or documents, but
unfortunately hidden away in a submenu that very few people would ever look at. (go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Add new shortcut).

Then there's multi-touch app switching. Warne observes that one of the biggest time-wasters when working with a tablet is switching between apps, but iOS 5 introduces a multi-touch method of app-switching: the four finger swipe, plau a five finger pinch to close the app and return to the home screen.

There are also location-based reminders (3G iPads)

Google's Schmidt Promises Serious iPad Rival

NewsFactor's Adam Dickter reports that Google CEO Eric Schmidt told the Milan-based Italian newspaper Corriere della Serra that "in the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality," his comments in Corriere della Serra widely believed to signal that a tablet based on the pure-Google Nexus phone model is in the works.

Dicter notes that in the newspaper interview, Schmidt also praised his former rival, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, as a friend and "the Michelangelo of our time" who "realized the revolutionary potential of the tablet and has created an amazing product like the iPad."

Lessons From Managing 12,500 iPads

InfoWorld's Galen Gruman notes that a majority of corporations have adopted iPads to some degree, but most are piloting the devices and/or allowing informal use by employees. However, SAP is not one of those companies, was an early believer in the iPad concept and now has more than 12,500 in use - some issued by the company and others brought in by employees.

Gruman reports that he met recently with SAP CIO Oliver Bussmann, and chatted for more than an hour on the company's use of iPads and other mobile technologies, as well as the issues that arise when you adopt post-PC technology, with Bussmann noting that for many employees, the iPad has largely replaced their laptops, though he believes it will be some years before tablets can completely substitute for the laptop of today.

The First False Step By Samsung In Marketing Mobile Phones?

HardMac's Lionel says that with its Galaxy mobiles, Samsung quickly became a major player in the market of smartphones, but a recent Samsung ad could throw a large cold chill on the relationship it weaves with its clients. The ads revealed the list of the mobiles that will be updated with the next major version of Android, and Samsung's Galaxy S is not on the list.

Lionel ventures that perhaps this announcement will convince potential customers of Samsung mobiles that the iPhone is, on medium term at least, a better investment.

Stealth Protection for Your iPhone

West280, a designer of innovative, form-fitting cases for the iPhone, has announced its new iOpener 4 for all iPhone 4 models.

image

With lines the manufacturer says were inspired by a stealth fighter jet, iOpener 4 is sleek yet deceptively tough, fitting the iPhone like a fine Armani suit, yet protecting it like a suit of armor. The case also includes West280's patented, slide-out bottle opener, adding a splash of personality to the iPhone [perhaps not the most wisely-chosen metaphor in this context. Ed.]

iOpener includes a raised bezel to protect the screen and full perimeter protection around iPhone controls and ports. West280's unique engineered interior design transfers the majority of impact forces away from the phone body. The two-piece case is molded from a proprietary polycarbonate/ABS polymer alloy that is capable of withstanding massive impact forces. When the stainless steel bottle opener is retracted into the case the three layers of plastic and steel create a suit of armor that West280 suggests may make iOpener the world's toughest plastic case.

image

iOpener 4 is available now for Pre-Order for $29.95 at: http://www.west280.com

Shipments are expected to begin approximately February-March 2012 timeframe. All U.S orders ship free via Priority Mail.

iOpener 3 is currently shipping for $29.95 at:
http://www.west280.com

iOpener 3 fits all models of iPhone 3 (3, 3G and 3Gs).

Sunday The Most Successful Day To Release Apps

New research on app success reveals that Wednesday is the most popular yet worst day for developers to release apps into the marketplace, and quiet Sunday has the greatest chance of apps reaching ranking success in the top 240. Mobilewalla, the search, discovery and independent analytics engine that ranks all apps, conducted the research.

Mobilewalla analyzed apps released in the Apple Store and the Android Market in a 17-week period between May 16th and September 8, 2011; total number of apps released during this period: Apple 91,754 and Android 122,220. The apps were sorted by the day of the week they were released (noting that developers control release dates in the Android Market; for Apple the release dates are effected by the iTunes review cycle).

The most salient findings are:

(*) Apps released on Sunday have statistically performed the best. A total of 42% of apps released on Sunday in the Apple Store reach the top 240 while 11% of apps launched in the Android Market achieve the same status.

(*) Thursdays are the worst days to release apps for success on Android (only 7% of apps achieve top 240 status) while Friday is the worst day for Apple (when 10% reach the top 240).

(*) An app on the Apple platform is 4 times more likely to be discovered compared to an app on the Android Market.

Anindya Datta, Ph.D., founder and chairman of Mobilewalla has published a corresponding brief on this subject called "The Best Day to Release your App to Facilitate Discovery and Success," exclusively for members of Mobilewalla's Developer Forum. Datta explains, "We looked at the correlations between apps released on specific days of the week and their achieved level of success (measured as the highest ranking obtained in their native app stores). "The reasons for the differential lie in the ease of discoverability of apps in the two platforms. In fact, an app in the Apple platform is 400% more likely to be discovered compared to an app on the Android Market."

"Apple users discover apps more conveniently than Android users. And while it is impossible to identify exact causes for this pattern, users may find it easier to browse items in the relatively low number of apps launched over the weekend."
