Hate iOS 7? Give It A Month

Think you're going to hate iOS 7? "Give it a month," says Macworld UK's David Price, who notes that after slowly evolving the iOS interface since the first iPhone OS, Apple's designers have decided it's time to make a visual leap, with the user interface color palette transformed from muted to vibrantly acidic, with the familiar transparency and parallax effects that create the illusion of a deep, layered screen and the borders, colour gradients and skeuomorphic elements having been banished.

Initial reaction has been largely negative, although your editor remains open-minded. However, I'm a more of a form follows function guy anyway. I'm most interrested in if and how iOS 7 improves the user experience.

Price recommends giving iOS 7 a fair chance before condemning the new look. I agree.

6 Overlooked New Features of iOS 7

PC Mag's Jill Duffy says that while many of us are already familiar with iOS 7's redesigned interface, AirDrop being added, the completely updated Notification Center, as well as some much-needed changes to photos, multi-tasking, and the control center, there are a few overlooked features of iOS 7 she thinks are worth pointing out, all of which improve the overall experience of owning an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Ms. Duffy highlights six overlooked features she thinks may whet your appetite even more.

1. Limit Ad Tracking
2. Do Not Track in Safari
3. Blocking Numbers for Phone, Messages, FaceTime
4. Auto Close Captioning and Subtitles
5. Apps Popular Near Me
6. Preset Maps for Walking or Driving Directions

An iPhablet Would Be Popular But Likely Cut Into Apple's Profits

SeekingAlpha's Michael Blair observes that iPhones and iPads are losing favour with consumers in favour of Android devices, particularly newly OED-recognized phablets - smartphones with screen sizes between 5 and 7 inches, particularly in Asian markets.

Blair cites IDC reports that 25.2 million phablet devices were sold in the second quarter in Asia, slightly higher than the total sales of tablets and laptops of 25.3 million in the period, and Apple has no phablet version of the iPhone so far.

The operative problem issue for Apple, says Blair, is that an iPhablet will almost certainly cannibalize sales of iPhones and iPads, particularly the the iPad mini, and be obliged to compete in a market sector already crowded with Android and Windows devices, and with Asian customers acustomed to paying bargain-basement prices.

Apple iPhone 5S To Come In Black, White And Gold Colors; iPhone 5C In Black, White, Blue Green And Pink - Barclays Analysts

ValueWalk's Michelle Jones reports that as Apple gears up for the launch of the iPhone 5S and its counterpart, the low cost iPhone 5C, analysts at Barclays analysts Kirk Yang, Mark Chen, Dale Gai and Ava Chang, in a report issued to investors, have actually reduced their shipment forecasts for the two handsets in the third quarter of the year., they cited slower than expected production ramp this month.

MS. Jones says the analysts continue to expect both of Apple’s new handsets to be unveiled on Sept. 10, and that the iPhone 5S will come in black, white and gold with storage options of 16, 32 and 64 GB, but unlike some other prognosticators they don't predict a 128 GB model in the pipeline.

What they do expect is the new gold color option, a fingerprint sensor, a faster (A7?) system-on-chip and dual LED flash, but predict the screen will remain the same as the iPhone 5 at four inches for the iPhone 5S, and the less expensive iPhone 5C to come in black, white, blue green and pink, basically offering iPhone 5 internals and features in a plastic enclosure.

China's Tencent Offers 10TB Of Free Cloud Storage For All

The Register's Jack Clark says that given the recent revelations about mass data slurping by the NSA, they were relieved to hear that a Chinese company has begun offering a whopping 10TB of free hosting to privacy-conscious users, reporting that after Chinese rivals Baidu and Qihoo 360 served up a terabyte of free cloud storage to punters, Tencent last week floated a 10TB giveaway.

Users need to download an iOS or Android App, which gives them access to a terabyte of storage. As they use more data, Tencent will extend the amount of storage given away up to 10 terabytes, compared with a piddling 15GB free for for Google Drive, up to 18GB for Dropbox, and 7GB for Microsoft's SkyDrive.

Nebulous Notes Lite Upgraded To Version 6.9

Nuclear Elements' Nebulous Notes Lite is the free (ad-supported) version of "Nebulous Notes" -- a powerful, yet simple, text editor for note-takers, writers, and coders. Your notes are backed up and available from Dropbox, which some of us consider the best all-rounf Cloud storage, back-up, and file synch. service in the world. Even Dropbox's free 2GB capacity accounts offer enough space to store 500 copies of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace.

image

Nebulous notes was one of the first Dropbox iOS text editors, created three years ago. One of its major advantages is that it's not limited to opening text files with the suffix "txt" appended to their file name as most Dropbox enabled iOS text editors are. Note well however that Nebulous Notes is only for plain text editing, and can't edit Word Documents or PDFs.

image

Nebulous Notes' developer Philip Dhingra says he finally feels good about recommending Nebulous Notes Lite as an alternative for the built-in Notes app. New notes are automatically linked to Dropbox, with auto-titles based on the first characters of your document. There have also been a ton of tweaks and bug fixes.

image

Features:
(*) Open and edit all plain-text files (.txt, .md, .c, etc.)
(*) Preview files in HTML, MarkDown, MultiMarkdown, Rich Text-RTF
(*) Supports saving and opening in all file encodings (useful for international users)
(*) VoiceOver hints
(*) Print documents using AirPrint
(*) Supports TextExpander

Features Lacking In Competing Apps:
(*) Save in Evernote
(*) Open files from ANY Dropbox folder
(*) Tag Files
(*) Customizable themes
(*) Macro system lets you add frequently used keys to a toolbar (like { } [ ] = %, etc.).

Bretford Ships New Cart and Rollers for iOS Devices

Bretford Manufacturing, Inc., a U.S. manufacturer of technology-enabled furniture for learning and business environments, is now shipping its high capacity charging cart, the Mobility Cart 42 for iPad and iPad mini. Also shipping are the Bretford PowerSync Roller 10 for iPad and the PowerSync Roller 20 for iPad mini, which are convenient charging and syncing roller cases. Introduced earlier this year, these products are designed for use in schools, training facilities and other professional organizations with large deployments of iOS devices. They are all currently available for delivery throughout North America.

"With the growing use of Apple devices in education, businesses and healthcare, there is also an increased need to charge, store, secure and transport them," says Dan Berger, product management team lead for Bretford Manufacturing, Inc. "Since their introduction earlier this year, our new Apple cart and rollers have generated great interest. With their shipping availability, professionals can now specifically choose which product theyd like to use to care for their iOS devices when they are not in use, based on the environment, number of devices and where the devices need to go."

The Mobility Cart 42 is the highest capacity charging cart for iPad and iPad mini offered by Bretford. Featuring a simple and practical charging system, this cart allows up to 42 iPads to be charged simultaneously and kept secure for one large group or for sharing between smaller groups. The Mobility Cart 42 includes separate locking front and rear compartments to allow users to keep power adapters locked separately from their devices and direct the heat away from the iOS devices. The Mobility Cart family, which also includes solutions for 20 and 30 MacBook computers, incorporates the Bretford Dock & Lock Security Kit that enables the cart to be secured to a fixed, immovable object during off-hours.

The PowerSync Roller 10 for iPad is compatible with iPad with Retina display and iPad mini. The PowerSync Roller 20 for iPad mini is compatible with iPad mini, iPhone 5, and iPod touch (5th gen). Both products incorporate everything needed for charging and syncing and ship with pre-installed Lightning cables. Each slot in the PowerSync rollers features a charge status LED, providing at-a-glance charge status so professionals know exactly when the devices are ready.

The new cart and rollers all carry certification marks confirming their compliance with IEC 60950, which is the internationally recognized product safety standard for Information Technology Equipment (ITE). The products ship fully assembled.
