First Weekend iPhone 5s/5a Sales Top Nine Million, Set New Record

Apple on Monday announced it had sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new iPhones on September 20. In addition, more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history. Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.

“This is our best iPhone launch yetmore than nine million new iPhones solda new record for first weekend sales,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO in a release. “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

iPhone 5s is even thiner and lighter than its predecessors, and powered by the Apple-designed A7 64-bit chip. It has a new 8 megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash and introduces fingerprint-recognizing Touch ID, which allows you to securely unlock your phone with the touch of a finger.

The iPhone 5c features a plastic enclosure in your choice of four bright colors plus white, a 4-inch Retina display, Apple's A6 chip from the iPhone 5, and the 8 megapixel iSight camera. Apple claims that iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c both offer more LTE bands (2) than any other smartphone in the world and include all-new FaceTime HD cameras.

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c feature iOS 7, with hundreds of new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop, enhanced Photos, Safari, Siri and introduces iTunes Radio (2), a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes. (3) Over 11 million unique listeners have already tuned in to iTunes Radio since launch with the most listened to song being “Hold On, We’re Going Home” by Canadian rapper Drake.

Every customer who buys an iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c at an Apple retail store will be offered free Personal Setup service, helping them customize their iPhone by setting up email, showing them new apps from the App Store (4) and more, so they’ll be up and running with their new iPhone before they leave the store. Customers can learn more about iOS 7 and their new device through new free workshops at all Apple retail stores worldwide. In the US, the new iPhones are available through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, select Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.

iPhone 5s Outsells 5c by a Factor of 3.4x in the United States Opening Weekend

Web Analytics and marketing platform Localytics' Bernd Leger reports (http://goo.gl/V3dNPM) that the clear winner is the iPhone 5s, noting that In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined went from zero to represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Based on the carrier data they're watching, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s, while just 0.31% are iPhone 5c, which means that the iPhone 5s is outselling the 5c by a factor of 3.4x among early adopters. However, we can expect the relative sales volumes between the two models to balance out more after the first spike of sales flattens out, since it makes logical sense that users who feel compelled to buy a new device the first weekend it launches are most likely power users who won't be the typical iPhone buyer.

Internationally, Leger reports that a similar pattern is emerging, with the iPhone 5s outpacing the 5c by an average factor of about 3.7x, but one exception is Japan where the 5s is outselling the 5c by a factor of 5x.

What To Do Before Selling Or Giving Away Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

A new Apple Knowledge Base article addresses the issue of erasing personal information from idevices that are to be sold or handed off to new users.

If You Still Have Your iOS Device

Before you sell or give away your iOS device, make sure that you have removed all of your personal information. Follow these steps to protect your data and get your device to its factory default state for the new owner:

Back up your device.
• Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.
• This will completely erase your device and turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services.
• If you are using iOS 7 and have Find My iPhone turned on, your Apple ID and password will be required. After you provide your password, the device will be erased and removed from your account so that the next owner can activate it.
• Contact your carrier for guidance on transferring service to the new owner.
• When the device is turned on for the first time by the new owner, Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.

Important: Do not manually delete contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photo streams, or any other iCloud data while signed in to your iCloud account, or the content will also be deleted from the iCloud servers and all of your iCloud devices.

If You No Longer Have Your iOS Device

If you did not follow the steps above before selling or giving away your iOS device:

• Ask the new owner to erase all content and settings as described above.
• If you are using iCloud and Find My iPhone on the device, you can erase the device remotely and remove it from your account by signing in to icloud.com/find, selecting the device, and clicking Erase. When the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
• If you are unable to complete either of the above steps, you should change your Apple ID password. Changing your password won't remove any personal information that is cached on the device, but it will make sure that the new owner can't delete your information from iCloud.

iOS 7 and Apple’s New iPhone Line-Up Pack a Powerful Bluetooth Punch

Beneath the cool new colors of your Apple mobile device home screen lie several Bluetooth bonuses waiting to be discovered:

1. Bluetooth Smart connectivity. Since the introduction of the iPhone 4S in 2011, Apple has been the poster child for Bluetooth Smart – that trend continues with Bluetooth Smart native support built into iOS 7. This is great for consumers because it makes it easier for developers to build energy-efficient appcessories – like Nike+ – that connect to your mobile device. And Apple doesn’t have the corner on this market – if you have an Android 4.3, Windows 8 or Blackberry 10 device you too can enjoy Bluetooth Smart appcessories.

2. Bluetooth mobile payment. More of a possibility than a reality right now, the plumbing is included in iOS 7 for Apple to provide an easy way to pay with your phone, via Bluetooth Smart. This is a perfect example of the opportunities Bluetooth Smart in iOS 7 provides to developers – building ways for people to do more with the mobile devices we have with us all the time.

3. Bluetooth toggle. In iOS 7, the ability to control Bluetooth is at your fingertips, not buried three screens in. Yet another way Apple is making it easier for everyone to use Bluetooth.

4. Bluetooth usability. It’s been easy, but in iOS 7 it’s even easier for Bluetooth Smart devices to talk to each other. This means less work on your part – because of some really great plumbing in the technical details, a Bluetooth Smart product like a wearable health monitor can send its data to an app on an iPhone or iPad without you ever pressing a button or opening the application. Now that’s usability.

"iOS 7 does a lot of things right, including its support for Bluetooth Smart," says Suke Jawanda, CMO, Bluetooth SIG. "While Apple has been a big fan of Bluetooth Smart all along, this version of the OS standardizes the easiest path for Apple developers to make the most amazing Bluetooth Smart products – which makes consumers the big winner."

Want to Build a Bluetooth Smart Appcessory?

The Bluetooth SIG can help. The organization offers the Bluetooth Developer Portal and face-to-face training seminars dedicated to shortening the time-to-market for product and app developers building with Bluetooth. The SIG is hosting developer education tracks at upcoming training events in London and San Jose. The Bluetooth SIG has also opened registration for Bluetooth Application Accelerators for Android, Apple and Microsoft, consisting of an application and corresponding commented source code, documentation on major areas of functionality, and overview videos.
