Delta Pilots Fought Hard In Futile Effort To Keep Their iPads

Appleinsider's Daniel Eran Dilger reports that Microsoft's marketing coup in selling Delta Airlines its Surface 2 tablet for use as an Electronic Flight Bag in place of Apple's iPad has created friction with the company's pilots, who "fought hard" against the deal.

"We fought hard for iPad," a pilot working for the airline told AppleInsider, describing the Delta deal as being about money, travel contracts, and Delta's Information Technology staff historically being "in bed" with Microsoft.

Digital Motion Sickness Will Be The Occupational Disease Of The 21st Century

Quartz's Christopher Mims notes that the more sophisticated, the more likely it is to give you a headache or make you throw up - literally, and predicts that anyone predisposed to motion sickness is going to spend their sunset years, when this kind of technology will become ubiquitous, in serious discomfort.

Mims notes that Apple’s new iOS 7, which uses a parallax effect to make its interface look 3D, is the latest example of how technol, ogy is making people susceptible to motion sickness miserable.

TSMC To Supply 60-70% of Apple A8 Chip Production - Report

Digitimes' Amy Fan and Jessie Shen report that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will handle the majority of the manufacturing for Apple's next-generation A8 processors, with the remainder of orders going to Apple's erstwhile main iDevice processor supplier Samsung Electronics, according to a report published by Hankyung in Korea.

TSMC is expected to cover 60-70% of total production for the A8, while Samsung will remain a contract manufacturer responsible for the remaining 30-40%, the report said.

Samsung has been the sole supplier of processors for Apple's iPhone and iPad devices, and the new 64-bit A7 chip in Apple's recently-announced iPhone 5s continues to be manufactured by Samsung.

Fan and Shen note that Samsung recently stepped up the development of its 20nm process node, according to a September 23 report quoting industry sources as saying.

EU Move To Standardise Phone Chargers Bad News For Apple

The Register's Richard Chirgwin reports that in a move that'll be cheered by phone users the world over, the European Union has decided that mobile phones should have a standard charger plug

The decision by the EU's Internal Market Committee was unanimous, with committee members determining that there's no good reason the charger should be treated as a proprietary secret. Chirgwin cites German MEP Barbera Weiler observing that manufacturers should “put an end to cable chaos for mobile phones and tablet computers”.

However, he notes that the initiative is widely viewed as singling out Apple, which has long marched to its own drum on the matter of chargers, and that although Apple, Nokia and (then) RIM signed a voluntary agreement based on Micro-USB back in 2010, Cupertino never mentioned it to the design teams, preferring its own connectors (both of which can, however, at least use an adapter to connect to Micro-USB).
