iLIVEx X11 Emulator Brings Firefox, Flash to iPads at SuperComputing 2010

StarNet Communications have announced iLIVEx 1.1, a fast, secure and fault-tolerant X server for the Apple iPad that comes pre-configured to display the Firefox web browser full screen. The iLIVEx/Firefox combination enables the famously Flash support bereft iPad to display websites with Flash video.

iLIVEx 1.1 sells for US $14.99 in the App Store, and will be demonstrated this week in Booth 1713 at the SuperComputing 2010 trade show in New Orleans, Louisiana from Nov. 15-18.

"iLIVEx enables anyone to use Linux applications like Firefox and OpenOffice without training," says StarNet Vice President of Sales & Marketing Paul Swart, "A majority of iLIVEx users want to run Firefox to view flash video on their iPad. Now we made that a one-step operation."

Firefox is installed on StarNet's iLIVEx application server where iLIVEx users have a free account that is included with the purchase of the app. Users can simply connect to the iLIVEx host and select the Firefox option. Moments later, the web browser displays full screen on the iPad, enabling users to view Websites that use Flash video

Alternatively, users can connect to corporate and other Linux and Unix servers on which they have an account. Besides Firefox, iLIVEx can bring up a full remote Linux desktop and run multiple applications such as word processing, spreadsheet and presentation. "iLIVEx turns the iPad into a low-cost X terminal, enabling users to work productively from anywhere," Swart explains.

iLIVEx is an X11 PC X server that turns iPads into x terminals for Unix and Linux workstations, mainframes and supercomputers. iLIVEx uses an ultra-thin data transfer protocol allowing for LAN-like performance, even over 3G connections. Connections run over securely encrypted SSH tunnels and built-in session persistency ensures users can reconnect to their remote applications should the iPad get disconnected, turned off or the user temporarily switches to another iPad app. Users can also switch their remote desktops seamlessly between iPads, Windows, Linux and Macintosh PCs.

Key iLIVEx features include:
• Viewing Flash – With Firefox, iLIVEx enables iPad users to work with flash-based web sites and applications.
• Multitasking – iLIVEx users can work on multiple office applications (word processor, presentation, email, spreadsheet, etc.) simultaneously, even copy and paste data between them.
• Persistency/Fault Tolerance – Users can reconnect to their remote Linux/Unix desktop at any time, even after the iPad has disconnected from the network. No work is lost due to a disconnect and applications continue to process data on the remote host while iLIVEx is not connected to the host.
• Desktop Switching – Users can seamlessly switch their remote desktops between iPads, Windows, Linux and Macintosh PCs using StarNet's desktop LIVE client applications. A 6-month trial license for the desktop apps is also included with iLIVEx.

It looks like the iPad has a new contender in town as HP bring you the HP Slate with higher demands, the first question that sprung into my mind is which is the better device? Apple has marketed the iPad very well with massive sales worldwide but can HP do the same with the Slate?

GoGoStat Parental Guidance Now Available on iPhone Helping Parents Keep Teens Safe on Facebook Through a Free Mobile App

Parents are now able to monitor their teens' activity on Facebook through the first free iPhone application for supervising social media postings by kids, used with GoGoStat Parental Guidance by Schakra. One of the sponsors of the International Bullying Prevention Association conference beginning today in Seattle, GoGoStat Parental Guidance Mobile is a free application that lets parents stay in the loop when it comes to inappropriate social media postings, contacts or cyber-bullying in which their teens may be involved.

Currently there are 41.1 million unique iPhone devices across the globe (Source: Canalys), and the Apple iOS (used on both iPhones and iPads) has a market share of 23 percent across all smartphones (Source: NPD Group). The high iPhone adoption rate and value of using a mobile monitoring app attracted the GoGoStat development team to create one for Parental Guidance.

GoGoStat Parental Guidance, created by the former Microsoft employees at Schakra, identifies risky behavior and provides information for parents to share with their kids. Parental Guidance alerts parents so they can act quickly, notifying them when pre-established family ground rules are violated, inappropriate text is posted, new contacts are made or photos of their children are uploaded.

"Convenience for parents is our primary consideration in launching an iPhone application for GoGoStat Parental Guidance," said Bala Balabaskaran, Vice President, Products and Chief Architect at Schakra. "With iPhone adoption growing so rapidly, our aim is to make it as simple as possible for parents to monitor the social media activity of their teens on mobile devices too. This allows parents to be notified of potentially unsafe behavior even while on the go."

With GoGoStat Parental Guidance, parents define the types of activity to be monitored on Facebook.

To ensure that teens are being safe and not socializing online with potentially dangerous individuals, parents are alerted to their teens' new 'friending' actions, along with specified age and geographic ranges. To monitor for appropriateness, parents are also alerted to new photos that teens post, along with new details in children's profiles which may expose sensitive family or location information. GoGoStat Parental Guidance also alerts parents to new status messages containing unsafe or potentially offensive words, helping to monitor how teens are interacting online.

Parents and teens exchange a common 'Parental Security Code' offline to ensure that only parents can legitimately establish a monitoring relationship. A 'panic button' feature generates an emergency report for law enforcement agencies containing teen profile information, postings, friends and photographs to quickly help with emergency situations such as runaways or abductions.

Parental Guidance is the second application released on Schakra's GoGoStat Platform, which enables the creation of unique solutions combining social media activity, web and communications services, then applying rules to make this lifestream of information more relevant for users. The first application, GoGoStat Sync, helps people maintain and update their personas and postings across multiple social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Flickr and many others. The GoGoStat Platform enables Connections At The Speed of Intent.

The new iPhone app for GoGoStat Parental Guidance is available for free from the Apple App Store and requires a free account signup at:
