iPad: Getting Beyond The Simplistic Consumption vs Creation Dialectic

Blogger Fraser Spiers says when the iPad first launched, many people opted for a quick analysis that it was a device "only for content consumption,"observing that despite time and experience having proven those people quite obviously wrong, debate seems to persist as to what the iPad is, precisely, for.

Spiers thinks the iPad can now serve satisfactorily for about 80% of all tasks you can conceivably do on a computer. Your editor would peg it more at 50%-50% based on empirical real-world experience, but its a moving target and your mileage may vary of course.

Spiers is probably correct, however, that the consumption/creation split is far too simplistic a curve to grade these devices on, that there's far more subtlety that we can reach for, and that we have to move beyond simplistic arguments about consumption and creation, proposing that we can instead look at the 'sweet spot' for each type of device along two axes: task complexity and task duration.

Task duration is the more obvious of the two: how long of a continuous period will you be using your device for the task.

Task complexity requires a little more unpacking.....

Samsung Plans to Double Tablet Sales in 2013 But Nearly Half Of Aspirant Tablet-Buyers Plan To Get iPads

Samsung is trying to make 2013 a big year, especially for its tablets. The device manufacturer plans on doubling its tablet sales this year, which would bring sales up to about 40 million units.

CNET reports that Samsung plans to double its tablet sales this year. CEO Y.H. Lee unveiled the company's Galaxy Note 8 phablet at Mobile World Congress (MWC), a product that will most likely be considered a tablet in the U.S. market.

Yankee Group Senior Analyst Boris Metodiev comments that no longer satisfied any more with just being the world's No. 1 handset and smartphone manufacturer, Samsung is now targeting an increase of its tablet market share, basking in the spectacular success of the the Korean manufacturer's Galaxy S range of phones, but fully aware that the smartphone market is getting closer to saturation point with market penetrations of around 50 percent in North America and Western Europe.

However, a survey by Yankee Group (http://goo.gl/1YQoa) indicates that Samsung has its work cut out in the tablet category, with almost half of 506 respondents (47%) planning to buy an Apple iPad. Amazon and Samsung were a distant second and third respectively of named companies attracting 7% and 6% of purchase intentions while the rest, including HP, Dell, Sony, Blackberry, Acer, Asus, Google, Microsoft and Motorola amounting to essentially noise in the survey.

Tablet Wars: Microsoft Surface RT v. Apple iPad

Network World's Wane Rash says Microsoft's Surface running Windows RT is just about everything you'd want in a tablet, but how does it stack up against the market leader, the Apple iPad?

"Well,: he says - "once you realize that they're in two different stacks," noting that on paper, the Microsoft Surface RT looks like a competitor to the Apple iPad with Retina Display. They both start at $499. The screen of the Surface is slightly larger, with a 10.6 inch diagonal measurement vs. 9.7 inches for the iPad. They weigh nearly the same. Both have an operating system that's baked in and a host of apps that you can only get from the company store.

But there are key differences....

-- While the iPad is primarily a content consumption device, the Surface, which comes with Microsoft Office, is also designed for content creation.

-- Where the iPad isolates users from the world of networks, servers and enterprise printers, the Surface works with them seamlessly.

-- Where the iPad requires you to work with its iOS grid-of-icons interface, the Surface gives you a choice of tiles, icons or even an actual command line.

Obviously the Surface has capabilities that the iPad can't match. RAsh says if he had to choose, and could afford it, he'd probably buy one of each.

Puffin Mobile Browser "Mind-Blowingly Fast"

MacNewsWorld's Chris Maxcer reviews the Puffin Web Browser, available for US$2.99 in the iTunes App Store, and says it's fast. "Mind-blowing fast."

Puffin also claims to have the fastest JavaScript engine, boasting that "Puffin is 550 percent faster than the built-in browser on iPad 3, and 1600 percent faster than Chrome and other alternative browsers on the iOS platform. Additionally, Puffin is 500 percent faster than the latest & greatest Chrome on Nexus 7."

"Is it true?" says Maxcer. "I don't know, but it feels true."

He ssays Puffin also seems to do a better job of ignoring the mobile versions of some web sites in favor of giving you the full version, and that while Google's Gmail forces Chrome to switch to the mobile version, Puffin lets you avoid that.

Puffin's other marquee claim to fame is that it supports Adobe Flash. Maxcer says that works, with some qualifications, and may or may not work for you.

Also included in a virtual on-screen trackpad feature that floats above your web page and gives you a mouse pointer. Not only can you move it with precision, but it's there to help you bridge functionality when you run into variances between desktop browser and mobile browser experiences.

Google Updates Chrome For iOS and Android - Faster Browsing For Smaller Screens

In a blog, Google Mobile Software Engineers Grace Kloba and Rohit Rao say their recent Chrome updates bring faster and simpler browsing to your phones and tablets, enabling you to scroll and fling to view all of your favorite web pages with even more speed and ease. Based on the latest version of the V8 Javascript engine, now optimized for mobile, thry've improved the Octane performance benchmark by 25 percent on average since the previous update. This means that interactions within web pages in the browser are snappier.

Kloba and Rohit say the team has also added expanded support for HTML5 features such as CSS Filters, which should result in better mobile websites in the future.

And if you're using Chrome on your iPhone or iPad, searching with Google just got even easier. Now you can see your search term in the omnibox, instead of the long search URL. This will help you refine search queries and view more content on the results page. That feature will roll out in the coming weeks, so you may not see it right away after upgrading.

They're continuing to add plenty of under-the-hood stability, security improvements and bug fixes to Chrome for both Android and iOS.
