An Everyman's Anti-iPad for India

TechnologyReview's John Pavlus reports that Indian IT industrialist Suneet Singh Tuli, 44, a devout Sikh, has found his own way to live by his religion's central belief of sarbat da bhala: "may everyone be blessed."

Tuli wants everyone in India to be on the Internet, and his London company, DataWind, is building inexpensive tablet computers, assembled in China. Tuli's ambition, says Pavlus, is to pair cheap tablets with ad-supported wireless service as a way to bridge the digital divide between poor and rich countries.

DataWind's Aakash 2 WiFi-onlytablets sell for roughly $40 each, by this March 31. That tablet works only ne ar Wi-Fi points, and there is also an $83 commercial version called Ubislate 7C+ that comes with an unlimited mobile data plan for around $2 per month. Within 18 months, Tuli hopes to bring the basic tablet's down to $25 and make the Internet connection free.

Tuli told Pavlus that he thinks hardware as a high-priced commodity is dead, noting that gigahertz processor costs $4 and is good enough for most everything you'd want to do with a tablet, and not just for poor people in India.

Vauxhall ADAM Subcompact Gets Connected With Apple Siri Eyes-Free Voice Recognition

General Motors' U.K. Vauxhall subsidiary announced at last week's Geneva Auto Show that its youth-targeted ADAM Siri subcompact is to be available with all-new voice recognition through Apple-engineered Siri Eyes-Free for iPhones, iPads and iPods running iOS 6.

Owners of what Vauxhall heralds as "the best connected small car on the market" will be able to talk to their ADAM and it will literally answer thanks to its iPhone iOS integration.

Siri Eyes-Free voice recognition can make appointments, send and read text messages and emails, or play a favourite tune stored on an iPhone or other Apple iDevice. Everything is voice-controlled so drivers can keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. A TuneIn app brings the world of international radio to drivers and passengers: app users can tune in to 70,000 stations and over two million on-demand programs.

The Vauxhall Adam Siri works with iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and other iOS 6 supported devices. The Adam Siri model will be colour-coordinated with the iPhone, to ship in either white or black with brushed-aluminum detailing to harmonize with Apple's iDevice design themes.

Honda and Acura to Offer Apple's Siri Eyes Free on Select 2013 Vehicles

American Honda haws announced it will integrate support for Siri, the Apple-engineered intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking, into its 2013 Honda Accord and Acura RDX and ILX models as a dealer installed option. Later this year, owners with a compatible iPhone running iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they safely keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and minimizes distractions even more by keeping your iOS device's screen from lighting up.

"iPhone has become so integral to people's lives that they continue to use them in their vehicles," says Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of automobile product planning, American Honda. "Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Free mode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer's ever-changing needs."

Honda recognizes the power of Siri and Eyes Free mode as an in-vehicle tool that will help meet the connectivity and convenience needs of its customers in a responsible manner. Honda has reengineered its software to seamlessly integrate Siri Eyes Free mode into its Bluetooth HandsFreeLink via the onboard microphone and speakers.

Will The Example Of Apple's Famous Defectors Harm iPhone Sales?

ZNet's Ken Hess says that while two influential tech world personalities heretofore perceived as thoroughgoing Apple fans - Andy Ihnatko and Guy Kawasaki - recently and publicly dumped their Apple iPhones for Android handsets, he thinks it's not going to have an impact on the popularity of iPhones, Hess finding himself unable to imagine why anyone who could afford any available technology would dump the iPhone for an Android. Hess notes that he has both an iPhone 4 (personal) and a corporate-supplied Samsung Galaxy SII, and prefers the iPhone over the Android, and that while there are a few things that you can do on the Android that you can't do on the iPhone - those things are only relevant to me and a few other ultrageeks and not the other 99 percent of users.

How To Migrate From Android To iPhone

TechHive's Matt Smith says that alhough Android's global market share is intimidating, two other numbers are enlightening: 22 percent of Android users eventually switch to an iPhone, while only 9 percent of iPhone users go the other way. As those numbers suggest, switching from Android to iPhone isn't that difficult. He explains how to make that transition as painlessly as possible.

iPad iPocalypse? - iPad mini Disrupts Buying Behavior

Computerworld's John Cox notes speculation that the sales of the full-size Apple iPad have "collapsed," and an informal and non-scientific poll of "iPad enterprises" and consultants shows instead some changing buying behaviors. He observes that some sub-markets that were considering iPhones instead of iPads are turning to the iPad mini, and some higher-education IT staff expect next fall's incoming students will bring a large crop of iPad minis because of the lower price compared to the 9.7-inch tablet.

However he contends that the "iPocalypse" meme of collapsing iPad sales was sparked because of the way a group of tech bloggers, news sites and industry analysts interpreted a market research firm's one-month estimated drop in OEM 9.7 display shipments, notably NPD DisplaySearch analyst David Hsieh who recently blogged some excerpts from a new report -- the "Monthly TFT LCD Shipment Database" -- on the company's website noting that "Shipments of 9.7" tablet PC panels collapsed, falling from 7.4 to 1.3M, while 7"and 7.9"panel shipments grew rapidly, from 12 to 14M. ... The January panel shipment data may be an indicator for 2013, starting with Apple's product mix shift."

However, Cox observes that not everyone agrees. For instance, data collected by Boston IT research and analysis firm Yankee Group in successive 2012 consumer surveys show continued strong demand for 9-inch to 10-inch tablets, with a single-digit drop in late 2012.

Mozilla Says It Has No Plans To Return To iOS

CNET's Jennifer Van Grove reportsthat during a SXSW talk, Mozilla.org's vice president of product Jay Sullivan said the organization won't build a version of its Firefox browser for iOS devices until Apple changes its ways.

Nonprofit Mozilla, which pulled Mozilla Firefox Home from Apple's App Store in September 2012, is not currently building a version of its Firefox browser for iOS, nor does the company plan to, according to Sullivan, speaking on a mobile browser wars panel at South by Southwest Interactive moderated by CNET Senior Reporter Seth Rosenblatt.

The sticking point for Mozilla is not being able to carry over its sophisticated rendering and javascript engines to iOS.

Smartphone Outsmarted: Intelligent Battery App Available from OtterBox

Being predictable isn't always a bad thing. OtterBox now has the Smartphone Outsmarted with a new battery app for Apple iPhone and Android devices. Introducing the OtterBox iON Intelligence application, available free in the Apple Store and Google Play.

This innovative app is a smart and seamless battery extender. iON Intelligence eliminates the guesswork of predicting battery life with a clear display of power status and an intuitive indication of exactly when to charge next. Soon, OtterBox Defender Series protection for iPhone 4/4S and Android devices will come packed with this innovative technology to provide a trifecta of power, protection and battery management.

image

The iON Intelligence software is a learning application that estimates battery power and battery time remaining by incorporating current and historical power usage. Over time, iON Intelligence learns about power usage patterns and improves its accuracy. The more its used, the better it gets.

"Battery life is one of the few attributes that Apple and Android users are often concerned with,"says OtterBox President and CEO Brian Thomas. "OtterBox's mission is always to enable the tech consumer, and giving them a means to manage their smartphone battery allows for intelligent use. Our engineering teams created a product that charges up to three-times faster than any other of its kind, allowing users to leave the phone charger behind and significantly improve battery life."

With a Made for iPhone certification, this product offers triple-layer protection in addition to smart and seamless power. The first layer is a built-in screen protector that guards against scratches without inhibiting touch sensitivity; the second is a sturdy polycarbonate shell that securely snaps in place around the device and the outer layer is a robust silicone skin complete with port and plug covers to keep out dust and dirt.(*)

While the app is smart, there are limitations. It's important to note that battery life is influenced by many factors, including but not limited to battery health, the number of times the battery has been charged, local temperature and even air pressure. Measurements of battery time remaining can also be influenced by distance from cellular towers, interference from other devices, other apps running in the background, how far and fast your device is moving between your carriers towers, push notifications, background iTunes downloads, background email downloads volume and frequency and more.

In total, iON Intelligence monitors and incorporates most but not all of these factors to create the most accurate, personalized power profile possible today.
