iPad Usage Share Hits 5-Month High In May '13 - Chitika
Apple iPad users are still prolific when it comes to tablet Web browsing, while Amazon's Kindle Fire and Samsung's Galaxy Tablet families remain in second and third place, respectively. According to the Chitika Ad Network's Chitika Insights tablet usage report, Apple's iPad usage share increased in May 2013 after a slight dip in April 2013, taking its tablet Web usage share to 82.4% -- the highest since the beginning of 2013.
To determine the distribution of Web usage among tablet devices for the month of May 2013, Chitika Insights sampled tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian tablet online ad impressions running through the Chitika Ad Network. The data used within the most recent analysis was drawn across the time frame of May 15 to May 21, 2013, and data for previous months was collected from the Chitika Insights March and April tablet market share reports, respectively.

As can be seen on the graphs above, Apples iPad claimed 82.4% of North American tablet Web traffic, an overall share jump of 1.4% since January. Additionally, despite a month-to-month decline of 0.9% in overall share users of Amazons Kindle Fire still generate the second most tablet Web traffic in North America, with a usage share of 6.5%. The Samsung Galaxy family of tablets claim third place, holding steady at 4.7% of U.S. tablet usage share.
While there are a number of players in the tablet marketplace, Apple clearly dominates the market, and managed to increase its usage share lead this past month. This rise could be due to increased sales of refurbished iPad models in advance of the expected fall release of the next iPad, which would have impacted share figures across the board.

Why Does Apple Get All The Best Apps?
Relaxnews notes that when iOS 7 is launched later this year, it will be pushed out to existing iPhone and iPad users on the day of its release, and that Apple app shoppers are spoiled for choice because, unlike their Android smartphone-owning counterparts, nine out of ten iPhone and iPad owners have the very latest version of the iOS operating system installed on their devices.
Apple has begun publishing (https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/ios/checklist/) monthly fragmentation data to highlight how many of its customers are on each version of its iOS mobile operating system, with this month's figures showing that 93 percent of iDevice users are running iOS 6, the current version of Apple's mobile operating system, six percent are still using iOS5 and a minuscule one percent are running earlier versions.
Those data confirm to developers that they can create apps using the latest iOS features and functions secure in the knowledge that more than nine in 10 active Apple devices will be able to run the app.
By comparison, Relaxnews says according to Google's own latest metrics, only four percent of Android device owners have the very latest version of its software (Jelly Bean 4.2) installed, while over one third (36.4%) are still using the 2010 vintage Gingerbread, and there are still new Android devices sitting on shelves in retail stores waiting to be sold that have Gingerbread installed on them.

TSMC Reaches Deal With Apple To Supply 20nm, 16nm and 10nm Chips, Sources Claim
Digitimes' Josephine Lien and Jessie Shen report that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and its IC design service partner Global UniChip have secured a three-year agreement with Apple to supply foundry services for the next A-series chips built using 20nm, 16nm and 10nm process nodes, according to industry sources.
However, both TSMC and Global Unichip told Digitimes they don't comment on customer orders and statuses.
The rumor is that TSMC will start manufacturing Apple's A8 chips in small volume in July 2013, and substantially ramp up its 20nm production capacity after December, with the foundry to complete installing a batch of new 20nm fab equipment, which is capable of processing 50,000 wafers, in the first quarter of 2014, with TSMC scheduled to volume-produce Apple A9 and A9X processors starting the end of third-quarter 2014.
Lein and Shen also note that the upcoming Apple A8 processor will be found in a new iPhone slated for release in early 2014, whole the A9/A9X chips will be used in the newer-generation iPhone and iPad products, according to their sources.

Samsung Go Up Against iPad With Three New Galaxy Tab 3 Tablets
LAPTOP's Mark Spoonauer says that just as Samsung has flooded the zone with several Galaxy SJuly variants to battle the iPhone, a trio of new Galaxy Tab 3 tablets has arrived to give tablet shoppers multiple iPad alternatives. Available in 7-inch, 8-inch and 10.1-inch models and starting at $199.
Spoonauer notes thst Samsung designed all three Galaxy Tab 3s to look like the Galaxy S4, complete with a physical home button beneath the screen flanked by two capacitive buttons, and you'll be able to take your pick from white or a dark gold brown. In addition, each Galaxy Tab 3 comes with an IR blaster and WatchOn software, which turns these tablets into TV remotes, and Samsung will bundle a bunch of freebies with each Tab, including a $10 Google Play voucher, two years of Dropbox with 50GB of cloud storage, one year of Boingo hotspot service and three months of Hulus Plus.
He profiles the three new Samsung machines here, noting that Samsung now offers five tablets to Apple's two iPad options, with Samsung having garnered an impressive 17.9 percent share of the tablet market in Q1 while Apple's share declined from 58.1 to 39.6 percent:
