Digitimes Research: iPad Sees First On-year Shipment Drop In 2Q13

Digitimes Research's Jim Hsiao reports that global tablet shipments hit 29.32 million units in the second quarter of 2013, down 8.2% sequentially, but still up 46.6% compared to the same period a year ago. He notes that as overall market demand is declining, both iPad and non-iPad product shipments have been impacted, and because of the iPad mini's significant shipment drop, Apple's tablet shipments in the second quarter were only 14.6 million units, down 25.1% sequentially and 2.7% on year, according to Digitimes Research's latest figures.

Meanwhile, non-Apple brand vendors' new products and the second-generation Nexus 7 have both contributed to shipment volume, helping it to grow 18.5% on quarter and reach 14.72 million units, with both Samsung Electronics and Lenovo having increased their in-house production rates. Apple and Samsung Electronics are still the top-two players, followed by Asustek Computer third, Lenovo fourth and Acer sixth.

Strategy Analytics: Android Dominates the Tablet Market in 2013 Q2

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 51.7 million units in the first quarter of 2013. Android secured a robust 67 percent global share, while Apple iOS declined further to 28 percent. Windows also fell back but secured a 4.5 percent global share.

Peter King, Director of Tablets at Strategy Analytics, says, "Global Branded Tablet shipments reached 36.2 million units in Q2 2013, up 47 percent from 24.6 million in Q2 2012. The Branded Tablet market had a rest period as very few new products came to market during the quarter. When we add in White-Box Tablets, shipments reached 51.7 million units, up 43 percent from 36.1 million in Q2 2012. Android is now making steady progress due to hardware partners like Samsung, Amazon, Google and White-Box tablets which, despite the fact that branded OEMs are lowering price-points and putting pressure on the White-Box manufacturers, are still performing well." King adds, "Apple iOS shipments were 14.6 million iPads in Q2 2013 which declined 14 percent annually. In the same quarter a year ago the first Retina display iPads were launched which could partly explain the decline as there were no new models in this quarter. However, to compensate that, iPad Mini which was not available a year ago, now freely available was expected to take the figure higher than 14.6 million."

Other findings from the research include that Microsoft captured a niche 4.5 percent global tablet share in Q2 2013. There may be an uptick in Windows RT shipments in Q3 following savage price cuts by all the partners still involved in the RT Market. Microsoft has reduced prices by $150 and other vendors even more; and while they are still not cheap, they're much more where they should be to compete. The shortage of apps continues to be a problem, with seemingly little incentive for developers to work on the platform.

1. A white-box tablet is a product produced by one company (the manufacturer or ODM) that other companies (the vendors or OEMs) rebrand to make it appear as if they made it. White box tablets invariably use different components to branded tablet in order to keep costs to a minimum.

Canadians' Smartphone Ownership Skyrockets, Canucks Getting Addicted - Google Study

The rate of smartphone ownership is soaring in Canada, and Canadians are getting increasingly addicted to their mobile devices, suggests a new report released by Google based on online surveys of 1,000 Canadians earlier this year. The survey finds that 56 percent of Canuck adults now use a smartphone - up from 33 per cent in early 2012 - and 79 percent of users say that they refuse to leave home without their their mobile device. Sixty-six percent access the Internet daily, and 35 percent cop to having become so reliant on mobile connectivity that they would rather give up TV than give up their smartphone.

A whopping 78 percent of survey respondents say they connect to social media with their device and 52 percent affrim that they log on daily.
More findings:

• The average smartphone user has 30 apps installed, eight of them paid software, and has used an average of 12 during the past month.
• Only 27 percent of Smartphone owners have made an online purchase using their device and 46 percent of those said they shop on their phone at least once a month.
• Roughly 77 percent search for products or businesses on their phone

Researchers Developing Ultralight, Ultrathin, Foldable, Crumpleable, Waterproof Tactile Sensors For Touchscreens

BioNewsTexas's Charles W. Moore notes that touchscreen technology is one of the hottest corners of electronics engineering these days, responding to the popularity of tablet computers, smartphones, and lately touchscreen laptop computers as well. Popular Science’s Joey Carmichael reports that an international team of researchers have engineered tactile sensors that can be bent, twisted, crumpled, submerged in liquid, stretched, and more — and as a bonus are lighter than a feather.

In a paper entitled “An Ultra-lightweight Design For Imperceptible Plastic Electronics” (Nature 499, 458–463 (25 July 2013) doi:10.1038/nature12314 ) published in Nature online on July 24, a team of scientists from The University of Tokyo, the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Johannes Kepler University at Linz, Austria, and the University of Texas at Dallas, note that electronic devices have advanced substantially from their heavy, bulky origins to become smart, mobile appliances, but still remain rigid, which precludes their intimate integration into everyday life. (http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nature12314)

However, the researchers predict that flexible, textile and stretchable electronics are emerging research areas that may yield mainstream technologies, and present a platform that makes electronics both virtually unbreakable and imperceptible. Fabricated directly on ultrathin 1 micrometre polymer foils, their electronic circuits are light (3 g/m^2) and ultraflexible, and conform to their ambient, dynamic environment. Organic transistors with an ultra-dense oxide gate dielectric a few nanometres thick formed at room temperature enable sophisticated large-area electronic foils with unprecedented mechanical and environmental stability: able to withstand repeated bending to radii of 5 micrometres or less and be crumpled like paper, and to accommodate stretching up to 230% on prestrained elastomers as well as be operated at high temperatures and in aqueous environments. Because manufacturing costs of organic electronics are potentially low, they suggest that these imperceptible electronic foils may become as common in the future as plastic wrap is today. Possible applications include matrix-addressed tactile sensor foils for health care and monitoring, thin-film heaters, temperature and infrared sensors, displays, and organic solar cells.

Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer Admits Surface RT Tablet A Mistake

news.com.au reports that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has admitted the company manufactured more Surface RT tablets than it could sell, and that its Surface RT Tablet was a huge mistake, Microsoft having revealed last week that it lost more than $900 million on the tablet, and recently cut the price of the entry-level tablet by 30 percent globally after admitting during an internal meeting that massive price cuts were necessary for getting the device to sell.

Balmer also admitted that the company is not selling nearly as many Windows devices as it would like, referring to its phones, tablets and computers.
