Retina iPad mini May Not Be Released Till 2014; iPad 5 Coming In Fall - Digitimes ODM Supplier Sources
Digitimes' Siu Han and Alex Wolfgram report that Apple's next generation iPad mini may not go into mass production until the fourth quarter of 2013, which would indicate a 2014 release date for the device, according to industry updtream supply chain sources.
Han and Wolfgram say Apple is reportedly aiming to use Retina panel technology equipped with 2,048 by 1,536 resolution in the next generation 7.9-inch iPad mini, and also said to be revising the design of the chassis to give the next-generation iPad mini an almost bezel-free look.
In the meantime, the scuttlebutt is that Apple may release a slightly updated version of the current iPad mini in the second half of 2013, that is expected to be lighter, thinner and equipped with improved specifications. Additionally, Siu and Wolfgram's sources said that Apple's upcoming fifth-generation iPad is expected to use thin-film touch screen technology, which will be able to reduce the weight of the device by 20-30%, and will also feature a slimmer bezel design to allow a bigger viewing area.
The fifth-generation iPad 5 is expected to start production in small amounts during July 2013 followed by volume shipments of 2-3 million units in August and September. As of October, shipments of the device are expected to increase another 25-30%, according to the sources.

Samsung To Supply Apple Next-gen Mobile Chips After All?
CNET's Steven Musil reports that Apple and Samsung's relationship is apparently not so strained as to prevent Samsung from providing the A9 System on Chip silicon based on a 14-nanometer process node that will power future iPhones and iPads according to a Korea Economic Daily report on Monday, which saud the A9 chip would go into production in 2015 and power an iPhone, theoretically called the iPhone 7, that could be released in the latter half of that year.

Apple Mobile Chips Fabrication - sticking with Samsung or moving to GlobalFoundries? Or maybe TSMC?
The Register's Rik Myslewski says the ongoing rumor-fest over whether Apple will dump longtime chip supplier Samsung and hook up with rival TSMC has taken yet another turn, the latest speculation maintaining that no Apple isn't moving to TSMC as producer of its A9 processor, scheduled for 2015, but will stick with Samsung. Or maybe Globalfoundries with its new upstate New York chip fab.
Myslewski cites a report on Monday by The Korea Economic Daily that Samsung will provide Apple with 14-nanometer FinFET A9 chips for the iPhone 7, which the news service says will be released in the second half of 2015, and that the reason for the change in game plan is that "Samsung Electronics developed state-of-the-art 14 nano models ahead of its rival TSMC, regaining the order from Apple."
It had been previously rumored by sources as diverse as Digitimes and The Wall Street Journal that TSMC would supply Apple with A8, A9, and A9X chips at the 20nm, 16nm, and 10nm process nodes.

Apple Seen As Better Off Focusing On Chip Process Development Rather Than Fabrication
Appleinsider's Neil Hughes suggests that rather than buying a silicon fabrication plant, Apple may be better suited developing its own proprietary chip logic process technology, according to a new analysis by Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, who believes Apple could license or sell its own custom process to a variety of foundries, which would allow the company to lower its overall chip production costs.
Referencing a rumor published last week that Apple may have bought into an unnamed chip fabrication plant, Munster thinks that's unlikely, and that the most attractive options for Apple would be to forge a foundry partnership with would be Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., and Intel.

Microsoft Drops Surface RT Prices Again - Down Another $150 as Apple's iPad Domination Continues
AppleInsider Staff reports that having failed to gain traction in the tablet market, Microsoft has cut the price of its consumer-oriented Surface RT tablet so low that the 10.6-inch device now costs nearly the same amount as Apple's entry-level iPad mini.
They note that resellers such as PC Mall are now offering the 32 gigabyte Surface RT for $349, while the 64-gigabyte model is available for $449, which means that the 32-gigabyte Surface RT is now just $20 more than Apple's entry-level iPad mini, even though the latter has a smaller 7.9-inch display, and half the memory capacity with 16 gigabytes.
And they note, regardless of price, Apple's iPad lineup still trounces Microsoft's Surface RT in dedicated apps.
Appleinsider also notes that last month, Microsoft was selling the Surface RT, which debuted last October with prices starting at $499, for as little as $199 in a fire sale was focused on education and students.

Microsoft Gives Windows 8.0 Surface RT Another Price Shave
The Register's Gavin Clarke notes that Microsoft has shaved 30 percent off the price of its 32GB Surface RT tablet computer, which now sells for $349, and 25 per cent off the 64GB RT, now at $449, the reductions available through the Microsoft store in the US and through US retailers, Best Buy and Staples. Intel-based Surface Pros are not being cut.
Clarke notes that one strike against the RT is that it runs a version of Windows 8 that's been built for the ARM architecture and won't run standard Windows desktop apps, unlike the Surface Pro machines which are full-fledged Windows computers.
