Is The Blackberry Still Relevant?
With the upcoming Blackberry 10 announcement, RIM is making news again, and its stock price is soaring, but is the Blackberry still relevant?
Blackberry might be the butt of fanboy jokes, but the trade-in experts at NextWorth (http://NextWorth.com) have pulled some surprising data that suggests loyal Blackberry users are still out there. In fact, NextWorth's data shows that Blackberry handsets resell values are neck-and-neck with increasingly popular Samsung, and not far behind HTC.
"The numbers show a robust secondary market for Blackberry that is keeping up residual value," says Jeff Trachsel, CMO of NextWorth. "This could definitely be indicative of the dedicated nature of Blackberry enthusiasts."
Average trade-in values for Blackberry from NextWorth:
Torch 9810 ($78)
Torch 9800 ($54)
Bold 9700 ($36)
Curve 9300 ($20)

iPhone fatigue Eroding Apple's Cachet With Younger Demographic In Asia's Trend-setting Cities
Reuters' Jeremy Wagstaff reports that the iPhone is losing some of its luster among well-heeled Asian consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, especiallr younger users who have developed "iPhone fatigue" and are are turning to other brands, impelled bya desire to be different and enticed by a growing array of competing devices, notably machines from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.
Wagstaff cites metrics from StatCounter (http://gs.statcounter.com/http://gs.statcounter.com/) indicating that that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore declined sharply last year from a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while in Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now have a roughly 30 percent share - down from about 45 percent a year ago.

Is Apple Fixing To Release A 128GB iPad? - Rumor
9To5Mac's Mark Gurman reports word from unnamed sources that Apple is preparing to release a single, additional 4th-generation iPad model that would be a more premium SKU priced at around $799 for the WiFi-only model and $929 for the Cellular-compatible model added to the current line of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB fourth-generation iPads.
Gurman notes that developers have found code in the just-released iOS 6.1 that points to 128GB iOS devices, 128GB references have also been found in Apple's recent iTunes 11 release, leading to speculation about an imminent a 128GB iPad release. However, while he thinks that projection is at least plausible, Gurman says he's currently not confident enough to outright claim that a 128GB iPad is in the product pipeline.

Why Release Of A 128GB iPad Is Unlikely - For Now
ZNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes says rumors that Apple is preparing to release a 128GB version of the iPad, adding a new model to the existing line up are unlikely to be based in reality, noting that there have been code references in beta versions of iOS 6.1 pointing to a 128GB iPad previously, and that product rumors based on findings within iOS beta code are notoriously inaccurate, and observing that Apple has never bumped storage capacity of any iOS device outside of a version refresh.
However, he also says he has little doubt that a 128GB iPad is coming, but thinks that it will be a new model - perhaps the iPad 5 and that its debut will be concurrent with elimination of the current base 16GB model, which would would allow Apple to retain the existing pricing structure for the iPads, with the 128GB model costing $699 for the Wi-Fi model, and $829 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

Android and Apple iOS Capture Record 92 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments in Q4 2012 - Strategy Analytics
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually to reach 217 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple iOS together accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide.
Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, says: "Global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually from 157.0 million units in Q4 2011 to 217.0 million in Q4 2012. Global smartphone shipments for the full year reached a record 700.1 million units in 2012, increasing robustly from 490.5 million units in 2011. Global shipment growth slowed from 64 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2012 as penetration of smartphones began to mature in developed regions such as North America and Western Europe."
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, adds: "We estimate 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q4 2012, nearly doubling from 80.6 million units in Q4 2011. Androids share of the global smartphone market has surged from 51 percent to 70 percent over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake. Almost half-a-billion Android smartphones were shipped in total worldwide during 2012. Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time. Androids challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, Blackberry, Firefox and Tizen."
Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, says "Apple grew 29 percent annually and shipped 47.8 million smartphones worldwide for 22 percent marketshare in Q4 2012, dipping slightly from 24 percent a year earlier. Combined together, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs."

How Unlocking Your iPhone Could Cost $500,000
The Atlantic's Derek Khanna, a former staffer for the Republican Study Committee, says that the most ridiculous law of 2013 (so far) decrees that it's now a crime to unlock your smartphone.
"When did we decide that we wanted a law that could make unlocking your smartphone a criminal offense?" Khanna queries, rhetorically, noting that the answer is that we never really decided, but Congress passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in 1998 anyway to outlaw technologies that bypass copyright protections, and while this may sound like a great idMacBook Pro - in practice it has had terrible, and widely acknowledged, negative consequences that affect consumers and new innovation and contends that "it's embarrassing and unacceptable that we are at the mercy of prosecutorial and judicial discretion to avoid the implementation of draconian laws that could implicate average Americans in a crime subject to up to a $500,000 fine and up to five years in prison."
