Apple's Swan Song - What's In Store For Apple As It Makes Its Descent Into Irrelevance?
PC Mag's perrennially provocative but always readable John C. Dvorak concedes that Apple is still the leader in mobile phone technology from a number of perspectives, not the least of which is the prestige of owning an iPhone, but says that amounts to fashion and fashion is fickle, and in this economy, one has to question how much longer the expensive iPhone can compete with lower-cost smartphones.
Dvorak expects a Apple TV set to come along this year and add excitement to the overall tech scene, but thinks Apple is hanstrung by an inability to crush competition using the sort of aggressive tactics historically employed by companies like Microsoft and Intel - going aggressive, undercutting the competition and playing dirty when needed.
He notes that while Apple was making a fortune with great margins, the majority of users adopted Android. The iPad helped some, attracting more users to iOS, but phones are mass market devices, and now we hear that Apple is thinking of making a low-cost iPhone. However, Dvorak suggests it may be too late for that, the way things are going, and that maybe a huge upgrade of the Macintosh would help things.

Apple's iPhone OEM Suppliers Decline on Report Orders Cut by 50%
Bloomberg News reports that Sharp Corp. and other Apple Inc. OEM component suppliers' share pricces declined in Asia trading after Japan's Nikkei newswire said orders for iPhone 5 parts had been cut about 50 percent following lower-than-expected sales.
Sharp, which makes display panels for the iPhone 5, fell 2.7 percent on the Tokyo exchange, while Samsung Electronics Co., which supplies Apple and makes its own competing phones, declined 2.6 percent in Seoul.
Bloomberg cites Apple's former Chief Executive Officer John Sculley (famous for firing Stve Jobs) contending that Apple needs to develop cheaper phones to boost sales in emerging markets.
However, the article also cites Hong Kong based Barclays Plc analyst Jones Ku noting that the actual order cut for iPhone 5s in the first quarter is being exaggerated, and maily attributable to an over-purchase of displays in the fourth quarter and not a dramatic iPhone sales slowdown.
Nevertheless, Mr. Sculley told Bloomberg TV that Apple needs to overhaul its supply chain to meet demand for lower-cost smartphones in emerging markets, with saturated U.S. and European markets offering little room for growth and Apple needing to adapt to a very different world transitioning from $500 smartphones to $100 smartphone, and will be obliged to figure out how to make lower-priced products and do it profitably.

Plastic Chassis Entry-Level iPhone May Already Be In Product Validation Phase
Digitimes' Ninelu Tu and Joseph Tsai report that Apple's rumored entry-level iPhone reportedly may adopt plastic for its chassis instead of reinforced glass or unibody metal as in the company's standard iPhone models, to save cost, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Main iPhone subcontractor Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) declined to comment when asked about the report.
Tu and Tsai note that rumors circulating say the entry-level iPhone will adopt a chassis mixed with plastic and metal, with the internal metal parts being able to be seen from outside through special design and that the related upstream components for the entry-level iPhone are currently going through validation and the actual product may show up in the market in the second half of 2013.

iPhone Fever May Be Fading, But....
Reuters' Adam Clark Estes says that while Apple's once unwavering grasp on the smartphone industry is showing more signs of weakening, even if Apple is losing steam, and the iPhone isn't the best-selling, most popular gadget on the market, the company will be fine. Estes notes that while Apple has lost almost $200 off its stock price in the past four months, it's still the most valuable company in the world.

Microsoft (Barely) Sells A Million Surface RT Tablets
iDownloadBlog's Ed Sutherland says if youre Microsoft, January cant end too soon, with the company's Surface RT tablet PC taking a battering from Apple's iPad, with MS selling barely more than one million Surface tablets during the holidays, failing to fulfil sales forecasts of two million and 1.3 million units respectively by analyst Brent Thill and IHS iSuppli.
Sutherland notes that it didnt help that Microsoft insisted the Surface match the iPad's price - a bit of faulty logic and hubris impelled by dreams of retaining PC profits in a tablet age.
For Microsoft, the hope now is that the yet to be released Surface Pro model that will run Windows 8 and desktop Windows applications, will catch the eye of Microsoft's core market: the enterprise, noting that Mr. Thill expects Microsoft will sell 2.5 million Surface devices by June, and up to eight million Surface tablets for fiscal 2014.
Sutherland allows that like RIM, Microsoft imagined it could morph a successful brand in the enterprise into an iPhone killer in the consumer market, and that anyone who believes they can come from enterprise sales to beat Apple in consumer sales is certifiable.
