Apple and Samsung Displace Nokia Worldwide for First Time in Terms of Internet Usage, Apple Ahead - StatCounter
Independent web analytics company StatCounter reports that Apple dislodged Nokia in January for the first time as the most popular mobile vendor in terms of global internet usage, according to new mobile research from StatCounter, the independent website analytics company. Samsung also climbed ahead of Nokia to take second place behind Apple on a worldwide basis.
StatCounter's research arm StatCounter Global Stats finds that in January 2013 Apple led globally for the first time in terms of Internet usage with 25.86%, ahead of Samsung (22.69%) and Nokia (22.15%).
"It's good and bad news for Apple," comments Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. "Apple has been handed the number one spot despite its falling usage share. A decline in Nokia usage from January 2012 to January 2013 means the Finnish company ceded the top spot to Apple." But..... "Samsung, in contrast to Apple, has seen an increase in its usage share since January 2012."
According to StatCounter data, Apple's worldwide internet usage share fell from 28.67% in January 2012 to 25.86% in the same month this year. Samsung rose from 14.84% to 22.69% over the same period. Nokia fell from 37.67% to 22.15%.

Fifty Percent OF Canadian BB10 Pre-Registration May Have Been iPhone, And Android Conquests
BGR's Zach Epstein notes that while BlackBerry (formerly RIM) laid all its cards on the table last week unveiling its new BlackBerry 10 platform and two next-generation smartphones that will carry it through the first half of the year, early reviews were unconvinced that the BlackBerry Z10 would regain the smartphone pioneering firm much market share ground.
However, Epstein reports that a recent research note from Canada's CIBC analyst Todd Coupland suggests BlackBerry may already be off to a phenomenal start.
Epstien cites Coupland listing several positive points for BlackBerry in his note, among them that 150 carriers plan to launch BlackBerry 10 phones, and BlackBerry World's impressive early app count (100,000 apps expected by the time the Z10 launches in the U.S. according to the analyst).
However, he says the real bombshell in Coupland's note was data on early BlackBerry 10 interest at Canadian carriers, where fifty percent of BB10 preregistration has come from non-BlackBerry users, which effectively means iPhone and Android users as well as feature phone users.
Speaking as a Canadian, your editor would suggest that the hometown team factor should not be underweighted in these metrics. Canadians have generally been proud of the former Research In Motion's success as a global leader in the it sector, and saddened by it's recent decline, albeit most not not saddened enough to choose a BlackBerry over an iPhone or Android device. However, now that BlackBerry has an OS, hardware, and an app infrastructure capable of competing, they're hoping that BlackBerry is on return trajectory from the wilderness, and it appears many Canucks are willing to take a chance on the Waterloo. Ontario firm's product again.
It will be interesting to see how things play out with the U.S. release.

Canadians Big Online Music Fans But Most Don't Want To Pay
The Canadian Press's Michael Oliveira notes that more than a dozen online streaming music services have come to Canada, with more are likely on the way, but while more than half of Canuck consumers (about 59 percent of anglophones and 46 percent of francophones) say they enjoy listening to music online according to a report by Media Technology Monitor, relatively few want to pay. YouTube was the most commonly cited source for seeking out tunes. Other sources cited include free radio-style options such as CBC Music and Songza, plus fee-based a la carte listening platforms offering access to millions to songs such as Deezer, HMV's The Vault, Rara and Rdio.
However, Oliviera says another recent report released by the federal Department of Canadian Heritage indicates that while many Canadians are interested in music streaming, most want it to be free, some one in three poll respondents saying they were very or somewhat likely to subscribe to a free online music service, but just 17 percent affirmed being likely to pay a monthly fee for a subscription-based service.

Canada's Manulife Launches Easy-to-use InsureRight App For BlackBerry 10 and iPad
Understanding insurance needs just got easier with Manulife's new InsureRight app. The app, now available for the new BlackBerry 10 smartphone and the Apple iPad, uses an interactive approach to help consumers learn about insurance and help them estimate how much life insurance they may need. Manulife Financial is a Canada-based financial services group with principal operations in Asia, Canada and the United States.
The InsureRight app is based on InsureRight.ca, a Manulife website that provides consumers with tools and calculators to help determine how much life and health insurance they may need. Accessible anytime, anywhere, the app is built to take advantage of the user's particular platform so they can explore their financial protection goals using the device they're most comfortable with.
"The InsureRight app is a terrific starting point for anyone interested in insurance," says Josef Frank , AVP of Insurance Marketing, Retail Markets. "It helps take some of the mystery out of buying insurance by allowing consumers to evaluate their own personal needs in a friendly, visual way."
The new mobile app is designed to provide a user-friendly experience for consumers on the go. From any BlackBerry 10 device or Apple iPad, the app includes a video to help users think about what they may want to protect and a Risk Calculator to help them learn about the risks they may face. Plus, the Quick Quote calculator provides an estimate of how much life insurance the user may need.
"The app is easy-to-use and very interactive so it helps consumers learn about their insurance needs and feel comfortable talking about them," says Mr. Frank. "When it comes time to meet with an advisor, they'll have a better idea of what they want to protect and how their advisor can help them."
With the app, users can access InsureRight with or without an Internet connection. When a connection is available, in addition to providing an estimate of how much life insurance may be right, the app estimates the monthly cost. If consumers want a full review of their life, critical illness and disability insurance needs, they can also use the InsureRight calculator, available at InsureRight.ca.
Download the app from BlackBerry World or iTunes or visit InsureRight.ca.
InsureRight.ca is a website designed to help Canadians realize the importance of life and health insurance to protect themselves and those they love. The site's easy-to-use tools and calculators make it simple for consumers to determine how much insurance they may need.
InsureRight.ca includes a Quick Quote feature for life insurance that uses just a few questions to provide an idea of how much life insurance may be right. The InsureRight Calculator gives a more complete analysis, reviewing life, critical illness and disability insurance needs. The site also features a video for a quick tour of the website and a Risk Calculator that estimates the likelihood of needing life, critical illness or disability insurance before age 65.
