Tech Blogs Biased Against Apple - Rush Limbaugh

Disgruntled Samsung will disagree after last weekend's veto of an ITC patent ruling in favor of Apple, but conservative talk radio personality and longtime Apple fan Rush Limbaugh contends that nine out of 10 bloggers writing high-tech hate Apple, which is the equivalent of the Republicans on these blogs, while Google, Android, and Samsung are the equivalent of the Democrats - perfect, can't do anything wrong, ideal, and everybody hates Apple.

Rush notes that pro-Apple bloggers are looking at the way the pro-Samsung, Google, and Android bloggers write, and now starting to write about the media bias and unfairness, and how they don't understand it, chronicling how pro-Samsung and Google, Android guys are faking data, faking news to make it look bad for Apple when it really isn't. And they're at the stage now of scratching their heads trying to figure out why this is happening.

Limbaugh contends that there's hardly any conservative media in the mainstream, and at the big newspapers and big networks, you have to look long and hard to find a conservative or a Republican, or anybody who's even fair about them, and he says it's the same in the tech blog world, where the vast majority of the typically younger folks who inhabit it are probably liberal Democrat, in their politics, and vote Democrat no matter how they divvy up on Apple, Samsung, Google, and that Republicans to them are probably aliens from Mars, racists, sexists, bigot homophobes. However they are seeing the same kind of bias in the area they care about that conservatives see in the area they care about - politics - and it could be a great teachable moment, He wants to challenge them to start questioning CBS the way you question Android-biased websites, to start questioning NBC the way they question that blog and the way they report on Apple, to start questioning ABC the same way they are dubious of that blog and the way they're reporting on Samsung.

Rush concedes that he doesn't know any of these people, and is probably someone that they would associate with Republicans - out of it, old-fashioned, fuddy-duddy, kook, hayseed, racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe, but he would like to convince them that in the mainstream media, the Republican Party is Apple, and the Democrat Party is Samsung, Google, and Android."

Global Smartphone Shipments Hit Record 230 Million Units in Q2 2013 - Android Captures Record 80 Percent Share

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 47 percent annually to reach 230 million units in the second quarter of 2013. Android captured a record 80 percent share all smartphone volumes worldwide, while Microsoft solidified its position in third place.

"Global smartphone shipments grew 47 percent annually from 156.5 million units in Q2 2012 to 229.6 million in Q2 2013," says Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics. "Growth was driven by strong demand for Android models across all price-tiers in developed and developing markets, such as the US, China and Brazil. Android now accounts for an impressive 8 in 10 of all smartphones shipped on the planet."

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, adds that "The Android operating system captured a record 80 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter of 2013. Competitive licensing costs, numerous hardware partners and a large apps store continue to be among the main drivers of Android's success. Apple iOS reached 14 percent global smartphone share in the quarter, its lowest level since Q2 2010. Microsoft slotted into third position with 4 percent share, reaching its highest level in the global smartphone market for three years."

Linda Sui, Analyst at Strategy Analytics notes that "Microsoft is making steady progress in the smartphone market due to strong support from Nokia. However, we believe Microsoft's WP8 platform still needs to improve in at least two areas before it truly takes off. First, the license fee charged to smartphone makers for WP8 must be more competitive to compete with Android in lower price-bands. And second, Microsoft must dramatically accelerate its support for advanced technologies, such as octo-core chipsets, because WP8 continues to lag behind Android in the premium smartphone category."

Samsung and Apple's Channel Dominance Leaves Little Room for Others in the Mobile Device Market - ABI Research

ABI Research's Device Portal sales channel analysis reveals tough times are ahead for smartphone vendors, as the balance of power remains with Samsung/Android and Apple. The report notes that the smartphone market is entering a new, more mature stage in its growth, where execution rules over innovation, and Samsung is dominating the sales channel with more than double the number devices on offer than any other vendor across the 13 markets and multiple online retailers studied.

image

Nick Spencer, senior practice director, ABI Research says: "ABI Research's Device Portal analysis showed that Samsung is dominating the sales channel at nearly every price point, with only Apple challenging Samsung at the high end of the market. This leaves little room for the other vendors to compete, especially the other Android vendors and those using uncompetitive operating system ecosystems. Despite some carriers' efforts to create a more balanced smartphone device vendor industry with their use of subsidy, ultimately they are obliged to fulfill consumer demand and at the moment that means Samsung/Android and Apple."

Spencer goes on to add that "The balance of power looks set to remain with Apple and Samsung for the foreseeable future. The course of the smartphone market is looking increasingly set as it enters a more mature stage on the current innovation curve. This is bad news for the players vying for the third ecosystem position."

These findings are part of ABI Research's Device Portal (https://devices.abiresearch.com/) and Mobile Carrier Strategies (http://www.abiresearch.com/research/service/mobile-carrier-strategies/) and Mobile Handset Go-to-market Strategies (http://www.abiresearch.com/research/service/mobile-handset-go-to-market-strategies/) Research Services.

Tablet Shipments Slow In The Second Quarter As Buyers Wait For New iPads

As expected, worldwide tablet shipment growth slowed in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13), according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. (http://goo.gl/LRn2KD) Worldwide tablet shipments finally experienced a sequential decline as total volumes fell -9.7% from 1Q13. However, the 45.1 million units shipped in the second quarter was up 59.6% from the same quarter in 2012, when tablet vendors shipped 28.3 million devices.

Apple aside, the report notes that remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fueled products are starting to make notable progress into the market.

Lacking a new product launch in March to help spur shipments, Apple's iPad saw a lower-than-predicted shipment total of 14.6 million units for the quarter, down from 19.5 million in 1Q13. In years past, Apple has launched a new tablet heading into the second quarter, which resulted in strong quarter-over-quarter growth. Now, Apple is expected to launch new tablet products in the second half of the year, a move that better positions it to compete during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, the other two vendors in the top 3 also saw a decline in their unit shipments during the quarter. Second-place Samsung shipped 8.1 million units, down from 8.6 million in the first quarter of 2013, although up significantly from the 2.1 million units shipped in 2Q12. And third-place ASUS shipped a total of 2.0 million units in 2Q13, down from 2.6 million in 1Q13.

"A new iPad launch always piques consumer interest in the tablet category and traditionally that has helped both Apple and its competitors," says Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets at IDC. "With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that's likely to continue into the third quarter. However, by the fourth quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon, and others to drive impressive growth in the market."

Not all vendors experienced a slowdown during the quarter. PC stalwarts Lenovo and Acer both re-entered the top five this quarter. Lenovo continued to make headway into the world of mobility and for the first time had shipments surpass the million unit mark in a quarter, shipping a total of 1.5 million devices. This was up 313.9% from a year ago and enough to capture 3.3% market share. Rounding out the top 5 was Acer, which shipped 1.4 million tablets in 2Q13 for 247.9% year-over-year growth and an increase of 35.4% over the first quarter of 2013.

"The tablet market is still evolving and vendors can rise and fall quickly as a result," says Ryan Reith, Program Manager for IDC's Mobility Tracker programs. "Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fueled products are starting to make notable progress into the market."

Table Notes:

• All data are preliminary and subject to change. Vendor shipments are branded shipments and exclude OEM sales for all vendors.
• Some IDC estimates prior to financial earnings reports.
• Shipments include shipments to distribution channels or end users. OEM sales are counted under the vendor/brand under which they are sold.
• IDC considers all LCD-based slate devices with screens between 7 and 16 inches as tablets, regardless of whether or not they include a removable keyboard (such as the Surface RT). Convertible devices with non-removable keyboards (such as Lenovo's Yoga) are not counted as Tablets.

IDC Tracker products provide accurate and timely market size, vendor share, and forecasts for hundreds of technology markets from more than 100 countries around the globe. Using proprietary tools and research processes, IDC's Trackers are updated on a semiannual, quarterly, and monthly basis. Tracker results are delivered to clients in user-friendly excel deliverables and on-line query tools. The IDC Tracker Charts app allows users to view data charts from the most recent IDC Tracker products on their iPhone and iPad.

Is The US Government An IP Hypocrite Or Just In Love With Apple?

Quartz's Tim Fernholz comments on President Barack Obama's overruling his own technocrats, allowing Apple to keep selling older model iPhones and iPads that the US International Trade Commission say violate patents owned by Apple competitor (and OEM supplier) Samsung - the first time a U.S. president has overruled the ITC since 1987.

He says there are two main ways to look at this decision:

1) It's the death of the global patent regime.

2) It's a procedural corrective.

Fernholz notes that explaining the decision (pdf - http://www.ustr.gov/sites/default/files/08032013%20Letter_1.PDF) to allow Apple to sell its older products, US trade representative Michael Froman essentially said that blocking Apple's sales as a way to force the company to pay the licensing fee doesn't meet that fair and reasonable standard, especially when Samsung can still take Apple to court over the issue.

Samsung's New Galaxy Tab 3 Tablet Line Leaves Something To Be Desired - Reviewer

BusinessInsider's Kevin Smith notes that Samsung recently released a set of new tablets called Galaxy Tab 3, but they aren't really that different from the tablets Samsung released last year, or the year before that.

What's new this year is that the Galaxy Tab 3 line is available in three sizes: 7-inches, 8-inches, and 10.1-inches.

Smith notes that the entire Tab 3 line separates itself from the iPads of the world by offering true multi-tasking in the form of multiple windows, allowing you to use two apps at the same time, such as watching a video while editing a document, and also come bundled with 50 GB of Dropbox storage which is a nice perk.

Smith had the opportunity to try out the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1.

Impressions:

Using it isn't different from any other tablet experience. The device is a great supplement to a laptop and it is also good on the go.

The Galaxy Tab 3 software isn't that different from what was released last year.

A noticeable lag when switching the device from portrait to landscape.

The larger of Samsung's tablets doesn't really draw us to pick it over an iPad. The screen is lackluster, as Samsung only opted to put in a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution.

The Tab 3 10.1 is Wi-Fi only.

16GB of on-board storage, but you can upgrade that to 64GB with a microSD card.

He concludes that if Samsung wants to continue to be successful it needs to switch things up with the next version so that its line of tablets can really stand out from the pack.

hAppy and hAppy+ Smart App Printers

The hAppy Smart App Printer is a portable, Wi-Fi app-accessory for smartphones and tablets that prints in full-color directly from a variety of apps loaded on smart devices. It's compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. hAppy also is compatible with Android smartphone and tablets and Amazon Kindle Fire tablets. Printing is simple: Download any ZINK app or an existing third party, print-enabled app to a smartphone or tablet; load an ink-free ZINK zRoll (photographic-quality ZINK Paper in roll form); design and then wirelessly print to the hAppy.

The hAppy+ features the Google Android operating system, a full-color capacitive touchscreen and built-in ZINK apps, making it the all-in-one tool for designing and printing from the palm of one's hand. Users can create and print in full-color without needing other devices or ink. Just load a ZINK zRoll; create the design directly on the hAppy+ touchscreen and press print. hAppy+ works as a companion to smartphones and tablets.

ZINK Zero Ink zRolls
Both the ZINK hAppy and hAppy+ use full-color, ink-free ZINK zRolls which include the innovative ZINK Paper in a roll form with adhesive backing. zRolls come in five different widths (3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" and 2"), with each zRoll providing more than 19 feet of full-color printing. zRolls feature an acid-free adhesive that allows users to quickly and easily remove and reapply designs if placed incorrectly, and becomes permanently secure over time.

ZINK Apps for hAppy and hAppy+
Both of the Smart App Printers are optimized to work with the specially designed ZINK Design & Print Studio app (available for free download). The app is pre-loaded on the hAppy+ and is available for free download at the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store and the Amazon App Store. ZINK Zero Ink Printing Technology

ZINK Zero Ink Printing Technology from ZINK Imaging is a revolutionary approach to printing that makes it possible to print in full-color without ink cartridges, ribbons or toner. The key to the ink-free system is the patented ZINK Paper, an advanced composite material embedded with cyan, yellow and magenta dye crystals and with a protective polymer overcoat. Before printing, the dye crystals are colorless making ZINK Paper look like regular white photo paper. The ZINK Smart App Printers use heat to activate and colorize these crystals. The result is full-color, high quality, long-lasting and durable images.

The free app, announced today at the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) convention, offers features designed to provide speed, choice and control to frequent travelers who want to save time and be more productive on the road.

"Frequent business travelers depend on National to provide the smoothest transaction of their travel day," says Rob Connors, assistant vice president of marketing for National Car Rental. "With that in mind, we have designed our app to make the rental experience even faster, more convenient and more streamlined, particularly for our valued Emerald Club members."

image

The app provides travelers with one point of contact to manage their rentals, with features that include:

• Rental Tracking The app has the ability to track all of an Emerald Club member's reservations and where a member is in the process of each rental. The app offers options to modify any feature, including car class, arrival time or day and payments, for both personal and corporate rentals. A snapshot of the most recent reservation or rental appears on the user's home page. Members also can receive EmeraldAlerts(SM) communications that include Arrival and Return Alerts, and Drop & Go(SM) service with convenient eReceipts directly through the app.

• The "Virtual Aisle" Members familiar with National's "Emerald Aisle" will have access to a mobile "Virtual Aisle" that will let them choose their exact rental vehicle before arriving at the rental facility. Using the app, Emerald Club members can see the real-time inventory available at airport locations with non-secured lots, then choose and reserve the specific car they wish to drive. The Virtual Aisle will be piloted in Tulsa, Richmond, and Omaha beginning next month, with a rollout in select locations nationwide expected soon after.

• Emerald Club Profile Management Emerald Club members can use the app to update their profile information, review reward status, book their free rental days, and access their virtual Emerald Club card. The app also offers push notifications to let members know if their payment or license information is out of date.

• Discounts The app displays specials and discounts that can be booked through any mobile device.

• Rental Locator Customers can locate each of National's more than 300 North American rental car facilities and access operating hours, "click to call" contact information, and more details for each location.

• Roadside Assistance National customers currently driving a National rental car can use the contact section of the app to directly reach Roadside Assistance.

National developed the app using input from "road warriors," including members of its award-winning Emerald Club. For example, the rental car brand tapped into its 300-member "Emerald Exchange Community," which consists of Emerald Club members who travel and rent vehicles regularly.

"We carefully researched the important tools today's business travelers need, so we could tailor our app specifically to those needs," saays Rob Connors, who leads National's brand marketing efforts. "We know from serving today's business pros that efficiency is their top priority, and National's Emerald Exchange Community was able to help us address that priority and more by offering invaluable, real-time insights into the minds of actual business travelers."

Travelers can download the app which is designed for use on both Apple and Android devices by visiting iTunes or Google Play. In addition, National will take part in a Google+ Hangout on Aug. 13, 2013, during which a panel of travel influencers will discuss the evolution of tech and travel and how National's app can offer value and efficiency to frequent travelers. Caption Distraction - Turn your Photos into Authentic Looking Comics

Caption Distraction is an iPhone app developed by Matt Lombardo which is currently available in the App Store for free. Based on the stylings of professional comic book letterers, Caption Distraction transforms ordinary looking photos into gorgeous looking comics. Through the addition of word balloons, captions, effects, stickers, and filters, Caption Distraction can turn even the most mundane looking picture into a hilarious, clever, or cute creation. Featuring an intuitive, step wise user interface, Caption Distraction allows for the production of dynamic looking comics within minutes.

image

In one of the most crowded niches on the iPhone App Store, Caption Distraction sets itself apart from the competition in a multitude of ways. It features an authentic comic book look based on the stylings of renowned comic book letterers Richard Starkings and John Roshell. Expensive licensing was obtained to ensure that the fonts, word balloons, captions, and effects all added up to produce a professional look.

While having great style in an app is important, it's completely wasted if the app is unable to function properly. This is certainly not the case with Caption Distraction as its user interface is one of its most powerful and innovative features. While many similar apps try to condense all functionality onto one screen, Caption Distraction takes more of a step wise approach and divides tasks into multiple screens - each featuring carefully written instructions displayed in alerts. The result is a much less confusing / overwhelming experience for the user which allows for much faster comic creation.

Another innovative feature of the user experience is the menu used to add comic elements to photos. With a couple of taps and swipes, the user is able to quickly sift through hundreds of word balloons, effects, stickers, and filters to find the element or feature they need. This is in direct contrast to other similar themed apps which require the user to access a multitude of distinct looking menus either nested or in different areas of the screen.

Caption Distraction's uniqueness is not only limited to its aesthetics and usability, but also extends to its features. Like many other photo apps, Caption Distraction provides the user with the ability to add "stickers" or small illustrations that can be inserted into a photo. Caption Distraction actually features over 400 such stickers in categories such as animals, glasses, hats, masks, monsters, mustaches, and many more. What makes Caption Distraction unique in this regard is its ability to allow the user to add color to these stickers. For instance, if the user wants to add a bear sticker to a photo, they have the ability to change the color of any of its components (i.e. fur, eyes, nose, outline, eyebrows, etc.). This is an extremely rare feature and one that is not seen on many, if any, other apps in the App Store.

Another unique feature of Caption Distraction is its ability to produce multi-colored text in its word balloons and captions. Many apps allow you to change the color of the text in its entirety, but Caption Distraction allows you to actually change the color of each character. So for instance, if you have a cute baby in one of your photos and want to attach a word balloon to it that says "peek-a-boo!", you're able to use 11 different colors for that one phrase. Again, like changing the color of the stickers, this is a rare feature that isn't seen in many other apps in the App Store.

Ultimately, Caption Distraction stands out in a very crowded niche because of its authentic comic book look, elegant user interface, and unique features. The response to the app from users thus far has proven this with all versions in all countries garnering 56 reviews for an overall five star rating.

Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad
(*) Requires iOS 5.0 or later
(*) 49.3 MB

Caption Distraction Lite 1.2 is $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Entertainment category. There is also a paid version of Caption Distraction available.
