Taiwan Vendors Concerned About Rumored Cheap iPad mini
Digitimes' Max Wang and Joseph Tsai say Apple reportedly will release its new smartphones and tablets in September, but compared to these new products, Taiwan-based vendors are more concerned about whether Apple has plans to release an entry-level iPad mini or cut its existing iPad mini's price to boost demand, as both moves would significantly change the current tablet ecosystem, according to sources from tablet players.

300 Days With The iPad mini
Splat-F's Dan Frommer says the major difference between the iPad mini and his original iPad, purchased in 2010, is that he's still actually using this one every day, almost a year after he bought it.
That wasnt the case for Frommer's big, bulky first-gen iPad abolut which he observed after 300 days that the main thing you needed to know was that he wasn't not sure where his iPad was, while he main thing you need to know about his iPad mini right now is that it was there next to him.
Frommer says the iPad minis light weight and easy holding have kept it as his go-to for reading anything longer than a few tweets, and on average almost everything he does routinely on the iPad mini is in two apps: Safari and Twitter.
He says he will almost definitely upgrade to a retina iPad mini, possibly also going for more storage and a built-in LTE modem for on-the-road Internet access.

Reasons Why the Android Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 Small Tablet Beats the Apple iOS iPad mini
International Business Times' Erik Pineda says that arguably at least, Samsung is the 'King of Smartphones,' but when it comes to tablet competition, the Korean tech collossus has heretofore remained inferior. However, Pineda suggests that with the release of the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, the balance could shift drastically, noting that obviously, the Tab 3 8.0's nemesis is the nine-month old iPad mini, since the latter's supposed successor, the iPad Mini 2 with Retina, is yet to arrive. He acknowledges that the mini is a monster hit, clocking more than 20 million buys for Apple in Q4 2012 alone, and so far it remains an Apple money-cow. However, Pineda argues that the latest Tab 3 is gorgeous, and most importantly powerful for its size, and that when pitted against the dominant mini, the specs deployed by Samsung with the latest small Android tablet easily dwarf over that of the mini's. and there are just too many areas that the Apple tablet underperforms while Samsung's shines, notably:
The CPU advantage
The device storage contest
The screen and pricing factors
And even with all these small tablet advantages, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.0 sells a street price of $300 while the iPad mini remains at its introductory price of $330 in most markets.

Designed by Doofuses in California?
Slate's Seth Stevenson really doesn't like Apple's latest tranche of T.V. and online video ads, that series of slow-motion vignettes ddepicting people taking delight in using their Apple products, and ending with Apple's new signature phrase: "Designed by Apple in California."
Stevenson contends that this ad series falls into a tired category that he generally despises: the "family of man montage" wirh dreamy odes to the whole of humanity and its propensity to buy the advertisor's products, but says that's not all that is wrong with it.
He observes that Apple had been on a long streak of marketing excellence, starting way back in 1984 with its legendary Super Bowl epic announcing the new Macintosh, and the mid-2000s "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" series being notable examples.
By contrast, he says this latest misstep is the worst he's seen from Apple's ad team, burnishing Apple's brand in general, rather than promoting a specific product, which Stevenson adds parenthetically may reflect the fact a lack olf new products to promote, and while taking subtle and not-so-subtle digs at the Asian competiton, it tells rather than shows and ultimately "just doesn't work."

The Register's Neil McAllister cites new reports suggesting that Nokia is planning to release a tablet running Microsoft's ill-fated Windows RT operating system.

IPEVO Launches First Kickstarter Project: AT-ST Video Stand for iPhone
IPEVO has just launched their first Kickstarter initiative: a new video stand for iPhone called the AT-ST.
AT-ST is a versatile stand for iPhone 5, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch. Taking a cue from IPEVO's iconic line of document cameras, AT-ST features a multi-jointed swing arm which allows the user to easily position the phone by hand at most any height and angle. AT-ST was conceived specifically for capturing high-quality video, eliminating handheld shakiness or the trouble of capturing oneself for video conferences and apps like FaceTime.

What Makes the AT-ST Special?
The existing handful of tripod stands in the marketplace fix your phone at a single height, angle and orientation, which is often inadequate and limiting. The AT-ST allows you to place the phone firmly and securely in a huge variety of positions. Other features include a weighted base for maximum stability and an "easy in, easy out" cradle mount.

As conceived, the AT-ST Video Stand for iPhone is the company's first phone stand. According to the Kickstarter page, "the idea for the AT-ST came aboutfrom the everyday hassle of shooting video with an iPhone." AT-ST features a multi-jointed swing-arm which positions the user's iPhone 5 or 4 at any height and angle for applications like FaceTime, for photograph and video capture, and for general use and viewing. AT-ST's swing-arm may be positioned by hand due to a finely-tuned tension in the joints, and does not require knobs or screws. A weighted base provides a sturdy foundation, and a specially-designed phone clamp at the end of thearm allows for firm yet quick phone mounts and unmounts. Additional features include a cord clip in the middle of the swing-arm, which keeps the charge cord managed and out of the way. iPhone may be charged while mounted in the holder.

IPEVO's goal is to raise $30,000 toward completing the prototype phase and manufacturing the first units. They have rewards for Kickstarters, including a $29 stand for early backers and a strictly-limited run of special white stands for the most generous Kickstarters.
IPEVO offers a six-tier rewards system. A pledge of $1 will result in a Thank-You email. A pledge of $15 comes with five touchscreen wipes. Kickstarters pledging $29 will receive a black AT-ST Video Stand, an offerlimited to the first 20 backers. Kickstarter's pledging $49 will receive a blackAT-ST Video Stand, an offer limited to 50 backers. A $69 pledge also results in a black AT-ST Video Stand (with no limit on the number of backers). Finally, a $99 pledge will get the backer a limited-edition white AT-STVideo Stand. These special white units, limited to 150, will not be mass-produced."We're tech users ourselves, and we saw a clear problem with shooting video using iPhone," says Royce Hong, CEO and big head of design for IPEVO. "Handheld video is usually poor, and it's difficult to achieve the rightframing, particularly when capturing yourself. The existing scant selection ofphone stands are tripod-based and don't offer flexibility of position or angle. As we envision, the AT-ST delivers a firm, versatile iPhone mount thattranscends handheld quality problems as well as the limitations ofconventional tripod stands. We feel it will be the best iPhone stand available."
