Delayed Fingerprint Sensor Production To Bottleneck Initial Shipments Of iPhone 5S to 3-4 Million Units In 3Q13 - Digitimes Sources
Digitimes' Josephine Lien and Steve Shen report that production of Apple's next iPhone, commonly referred to be the iPhone 5S and scheduled to be unveiled on September 10, could reach only 3-4 million units in the third quarter of 2013 compared to 10 million units as originally planned. The problem is a delay in production of fingerprint sensors needed for the iPhone 5S, according to industry sources.
Lien and Shen note that mass production of the fingerprint sensors was originally scheduled to begin in May at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and then to be packaged at Xintec, a TSMC subsidiary, their sources indicated. However, the production of the sensors has been delayed due to issues related to integration between iOS 7 and fingerprint chips, as well as a low yield rate at packaging firm Xintec, and an engineering team of engineers from Apple and TSMC has been dispatched to Xintec recently to help ramp up the yield rate for the packaging of fingerprint sensors, revealed the sources, adding that the supply chain will be able to start volume production of fingerprint chips at the end of August.
Once sufficient supplies of fingerprint chips are available, Lien and Shen say they're informed that production of the iPhone 5S is likely to ramp up to 28-30 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Apple's Fifth-Gen iPad Reaffirmed To Use Same Thin Touch Sensor As iPad mini
Appleinsider's Sam Oliver says the anticipated fifth-generation full-size iPad will employ the same thin touch sensor Apple first introduced last year in the iPad mini, according to a report on Monday by The Wall Street Journal citing unnamed sources indicating the same "film-based touch panel" found in the iPad mini will make its way to the fifth-generation iPad, and that the company behind the technology, Nitto Denko Corp., plans to double its capacity for touch sensors by the end of the fiscal year.

WinSuperSite's Paul Thurrott predicts that industry watchers and technology enthusiasts will be debating Microsofts decision to enter the PC market for years to come, but in the wake of a disastrous Surface launch year a more pressing concern emerges: Can Surface be saved? Or is this brand already too tainted to survive, let alone ever be successful?
Thurrott relates how the Surface got off to a bad start for him mirroring his earlier experience with Zune, which he recalls was also "launched in a bizarre, hubris-heavy way that showed a distinct lack of humility for a firm that was then, as now, entering a market in which it was simply being dominated. The Zune crashed and burned in the face of the awesome iPod and iTunes. And so far at least, Surfaceand, as alarming, the entire ecosystem of Windows 8/RT-based tablets, for that matterhas crashed and burned in the face of simpler and less expensive Android tablets and the iPad."

Despite Microsoft Surface RT Debacle, Second-Gen Model In The Works
The Register's Rik Myslewski reports that Nvidia's CEO says his company is working with Microsoft on a second-generation Surface RT, and that he believes it has a chance of success even though the original Surface RT tablet was an utter flop -- because it will include Microsoft Outlook, ited commenting to CNET that "It is the killer app for Windows. Now we're going to bring it with the second-generation Surface. We're working really hard on it, and we hope that it's going to be a big success."
Myslewski draws notice to Mr. Huang saying "hope," and not a more-positive utterance typically used in a forward-looking statement about an upcoming product, a term such as "know" or even "believe". And there is plenty of reason to doubt;
