Forget Netbooks, iPad Cannibalizing Entire PC Industry

Digital Daily's John Paczkowski says:

Apple’s iPad may not be cannibalizing Mac sales, but it’s evidently having a deleterious effect on the PC market – and not just the netbook segment. According to UBS analyst Maynard Um, the iPad is having a negative impact on the entire PC industry....

Netbooks vs. iPads - can they coexist?

Computerworld's Serdar Yegulalp says the term "disruptive"... fits when referencing the two products that have taken personal computing by storm over the past couple of years: the iPad and the netbook.

Yegulap notes that there's been a lot of talk about whether the iPad will displace the netbook, or even gobble up market share currently occupied by mainstream desktop and laptop computers, observing that netbooks have formed a market niche of their own alongside and apart from other PCs, but the iPad has a long way to go before it becomes a netbook killer - partly because it has already created a space all its own, an while its initial sales performance has been impressive, it's not yet clear how many non-Apple users will opt for the iPad, with the waters about to be muddied further by the imminent arrival of competing tablets powered by Android and Windows 7.

Five Tools to Turn an iPad into a Notebook PC Alternative

Small Business Computing's James A. Martin says:

Want to transform your iPad tablet into a notebook computer? You could follow the lead of Japanese blogger, who gutted an old Apple iBook G3 laptop and replaced its screen with an iPad. Then again, that seems like a whole lot of work. But the quirky retrofit speaks to a larger trend: that iPad owners are increasingly seeing Apple's eye-catching tablet as a viable notebook computer alternative.....

Education Trends: Netbooks and iPads

Low End Mac's John Hatchett says:

Two relatively new devices are going to make an impact on computers in education.

The netbook is not new, but we are using them at our school in order to save money.... In my high school, about 90% of the computer usage involves Internet browsing and running Microsoft Office. A netbook can do this....

I know that Steve Jobs has pooh-poohed the idea of Apple making a Mac netbook and is going full stream ahead with the iPad and the new iPhone 4 - but why not license Dell to produce a netbook for you? Most of the Dell netbooks play nice with Leopard.

I know, probably never going to happen.....

Hatchett also thinks the iPad is going to make a big impact on education, and that the next generation of users will interact with mobile computers in a totally different way than we do.

To iPad or Not to iPad: That is the Tech Question

Writing for Computerworld, David A. Milman, Founder and CEO of Rescuecom, ponders the difficult decision more and more consumers are faced with when they consider a tablet computer purchase: should they go with the known factor in the iPad or wait for one of the as-yet unknown devices, noting that hardly a day passes without about the legion of supposed iPad killers lining up to take it down.

Milman wonders if the iPad's remarkable early popularity will last, observing that tablets are like all new technology: exciting, intriguing, and seductive, but questions whether it will have staying power. However, he notes that while Windows Phone 7, Google's Chrome, and Android all certainly have the potential to compete with the iPad, but until they've been seen in action, Apple has the edge.
