iOS 7 on 52% of iOS Devices One Week After Public Release

Chitika reports that by the afternoon of September 25th, 2013, one week following the release of iOS 7, over 51% of North American iOS-based Web traffic was generated by iOS 7 users, outpacing iOS 6 over the same time period.

By the afternoon of September 20th, 2013, 48 hours following the release of iOS 7, nearly 32% of North American iOS-based Web traffic was already being generated by iOS 7 users, outpacing iOS 6, which took about three days to cross the 30% threshold.

Chitika notes that:

On September 18th, 2013 Apple pushed iOS 7 live, making updates available over-the-air and through iTunes. Aside from a new look and feel, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system offers a significant number of new features; such as control center, automated app updating, and AirDrop, among others. Many of these new features were well received by users, and demand on Apple's servers caused some to experience very slow download times or errors on launch day. While the OS itself seems to be a welcome change for Apple's users, how did the server load, along with slightly narrowed eligibility for the upgrade impact iOS 7 adoption as compared to iOS 6?

After being available to consumers for just under 24 hours, Chitika Insights tapped into Chitika Ad network data to answer this question. To determine the success of Apple's latest mobile operating system, Chitika Insights tracked the adoption rate of iOS 7 across all iOS devices.

To quantify this study, Chitika Insights examined a sample of millions of North American iOS-based online ad impressions from within the Chitika Ad network, ranging from September 18th to September 19th 2013. The growth rate of iOS 7 was then compared to total iOS Web usage using a time series to illustrate the rate of adoption of the new OS. For comparison, they overlaid the 24-hour iOS 6 adoption data we catalogued last year. More graphs depicting both data sets can be seen on the Chitika Website.

Pre-release iOS 7 exhibited low levels of usage due to beta-version activity from developers. Following iOS 7's public release the afternoon of September 18th, adoption levels soared despite high loads on Apple's servers. About 24 hours following the start of the public rollout, adoption reached levels above 18%. This level of adoption represents another proverbial feather in the cap of Apple, as it bests the impressive adoption rates of iOS 6 in the same time period last year. For some competitive comparison, Google reports that as of September 4th, 2013, adoption of Jelly Bean, which was released in July 2012, comprises about 45% of the Android ecosystem. Judging by past trends, its likely that iOS 7 will surpass that mark very soon.

Listen Up Apple-Haters: iPhone Sales Eclipse Microsoft and Amazon Revenue

BusineesWeek's Eric Chemi notes that Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken plenty of stick for running a company that is supposedly well past its glory days, and that the iPhone smartphone franchise is sometimes dismissed as a spent force, losing ground to more innovative brands such as Android and Samsung. Chemi provides a little perspective for the Apple-haters.

He points out that if the iPhone were a single product from its own company in the Standard & Poors 500-stock index, IPhone Inc. would outsell 474 of those companies - ranking between Wells Fargo (WFC) ($90.5 billion) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) ($84.9 billion), and moreover, the iPhones $88.4 billion in annualized revenue tops 21 of the 30 component companies in the Dow Jones industrial average, and would be the ninth-biggest stock in the Dow 30.

Thrifty Brits Prefer iPhone 5c Over 5s More Than Any Other Nation On the Entire Globe

The Register's Rik Myslewski says that after learning that Apple's iPhone 5s was being activated by carriers at a far higher rate than the less-expensive iPhone 5c, The Register team was curious as to how the UK compared to the US when it came to that breakdown so they asked Localytics, the company that provided the original activation stats this Monday.

Turns out that when choosing between the iPhone 5s and 5c, no country in the world is a frugal as the UK.

Apple Rumored To Be Working On Giant 12-Inch iPad

BGR's Brad Reed says that while Apple may have missed the boat with the phablet craze, now it may be trying to beat Samsung to the punch by releasing an iPad Mega, with the Chinese newspaper United Daily News reporting that Apple is teaming up with longtime manufacturing partner Quanta Computer to design a 12-inch iPad that the company will use to offset declines in MacBook Air sales.

No Microsoft Surface Mini Until 2014

The Register's Neil MacAllister reports that
Microsoft isn't done with its second round of Surface tablets, but a Mini version with an eight-inch or smaller screen probably won't arrive until next year, according to the latest rumors.

He cites longtime Redmond-watcher Mary Jo Foley's sources saying Microsoft is readying a pint-sized portable to round out its hardware line, but it's not slated to ship until early 2014, to coincide with a post-8.1 Windows update dubbed the "Spring 2014 GDR" (Presumably, "GDR" here stands for "General Distribution Release")
