Why Launch a 64-Bit iPhone 5S? Think iPads and Macs

PC Mag's Sascha Segan notes that one of the biggest advances in the iPhone 5S has no apparent reason to be there. That would be the 64-bit Apple A7 processor, which is Sagan contends is destined to be utterly under-used in the pocket-sized smartphone, being as the main reason to use a 64-bit processor is to address more than 4GB of memory, which just isn't an issue on today's iPhones and even iPads. However, he deduces that putting the A7 in the iPhone 5c is mostly a trial balloon for its inclusion in the fifth-generation iPad late next month, noting that Apple needs to update its iPad line for the holidays and will want to have a few weeks' worth of breathing room after this week's iPhone launch, but it needs to have new iPad products in stores by mid-November.

The Wonderfully Mundane New iPhone

The New Yorker's Matt Buchanan observes that Apple's new iPhones look like Apple's old iPhones, sound like the old iPhones, and do the same things as the old iPhones - just slightly better, more colorfully, and less expensively than the old iPhones. This might seem disappointing, Buchanan notes, even Apple's phones are boring now. But he says this is actually an ideal state of affairs.

StatCounter Charts Apple's Global Battle With Samsung At Time Of New iPhone Launch

Just ahead of Apple's announcement of a new lower cost iPhone 5c, independent web analytics company StatCounter released research highlighting the challenge the Cupertino headquartered company faces globally from Samsung.

The firm's research arm StatCounter Global Stats finds that Samsung, which overtook Apple for the first time worldwide in June in terms of internet usage, has extended its lead to 25.7% in August compared to Apple on 23.4%. Nokia, which led globally up until December last, is now in third place on 21.7%.

In the US Apple remains the clear leader on 52.2% compared to Samsung’s 19%. Nokia is on 1.5% in the US, representing an underdog opportunity for Microsoft following the announcement of its proposed partial acquisition of Nokia.

In the UK Apple is also the clear leader in the mobile vendor battle on 46.8% in August compared to 21.5% for Samsung and 3.7% for Nokia.

In India, Samsung has 26.7% usage share while Apple with just 1% currently has significant growth potential with the rumored lower cost iPhone.

"Over the past 12 months Apple has increased its share in the US and UK but globally there is an on-going battle taking place between it and Samsung. Should the rumors prove true, it will be fascinating to see if a less expensive iPhone will help it increase market against lower cost competitors in global markets," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO StatCounter.
