Is iOS 7 Really Making People Sick? - The Strange Effects of Apple's Latest OS Update Explained

Apple introduced its new iPhones to the public last month, along with a new operating system that some claim is leading to headaches and sickness. Specifically, iOS 7's new zoom functions are said to induce feelings of motion sickness, vertigo, headaches and dizziness. Tech expert Karl Volkman of Chicago's SRV Network, Inc., weighs in on the update and how users can adjust their settings to eliminate this effect.

"The iOS7 has a zoom feature that goes into effect when switching between apps, and that seems to be the cause of some negative user experiences," says Volkman. "Although Apple probably didnt anticipate the motion sickness that some are reporting, they luckily included an option to reduce motion that users can choose under Settings. This option is said to reduce the animation that occurs when changing apps, and hopefully reduce any dizziness one might be experiencing."

Complaints have been flooding online forums, including Apple's discussion boards, and many customers are not happy with the new update. Chicago resident Erin Blackwell explains what happened when she first started using iOS7: "After a few days of using the updated operating system I realized the zooming feature was making me feel dizzy and I started to get headaches. I did some research and changed my settings to reduce the motion, which definitely helped lessen the effects."

According to Mr. Volkman, the zoom effect is a nonessential feature that doesnt add any sort of functional advantage. After some people complained of having trouble downloading iOS 7 in the first place, this is another headache, literally, that Apple users have had to overcome with the new system.

iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 to Get 8-Megapixel Rear Cameras - Rumor

MacRumors' Juli Clover report that Apple's fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad mini may be loaded with significantly improved camera rear-facing cameras, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Both current iPad models are equipped with 5-megapixel rear cameras with an f/2.4 aperture, which could be upgraded to an 8-megapixel camera with a larger aperture, similar to the camera included in the iPhone 5s.

Ms. Clover notes that although Apple has historically placed less emphasis on its tablet cameras compared to its iPhone cameras, the iPad camera is due for an upgrade.

Appleinsider's Mikey Campbell also cites that report from Mr. Kuo, with the new cameras to have upgraded five-element lens modules with larger apertures manufactured by Genius Optics and Largan - the two firms responsible for optics used in Apple's iPhone 5s and 5c. AppleInsider has independently learned the sensor modules will be provided solely by Sony.

Kuo's report, the analyst believes Apple will rely on camera upgrades to further differentiate the iPad from competitors in a tablet market becoming increasingly crowded with high-spec Android devices.

Editor's note: Currently on the fence as to whether to go with an Apple refurbished iPad 4 or the new iPad 5 for my iPad upgrade, an 8 megapixel camera could tip the balance toward the new one for me, notwhthstanding the hassle and expense of having to get new cases and accessories to accommoate the smaller size. However, the mediocre camera in my iPad 2 has been my main dissatisfaction with the device.

iPad 5 Set To Outpace iPad Mini 2 Shipments - KGI Analyst

CNET's Brooke Crothers says the iPad 5 may dwarf those of the iPad mini 2 in the fourth quarter of this year, according to a report from a widely cited KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who estimates that iPad 5 will see shipments of more than 10 million units in the fourth quarter compared with about 2 million for the iPad mini 2, which Mr. Kuo describes as the "so-called Retina iPad mini," since availability of the iPad Mini 2 is expected to be limited in Q413.

Retina iPad mini Confronted With Production Delays

Reuters Clare Jim and Reiji Murai report that Apple will be unable to widely deploy a new version of the iPad mini with Retina display this month according to sources working in the company's supply chain, and the mini 2 could be available in only limited quantities this year, if at all.

It's All Over For Paid Apps, With A Few Exceptions

TechCrunch's Sarah Perez says the general thinking these days is that it's over for paid mobile apps, as the App Stores fill up with good enough alternatives to paid apps and major publishers game the charts with free offerings that make millions which can then be used for their ongoing user acquisition efforts.

Ms. Perez notes that in July analytics firm Flurry reported that from 2010 to 2012, the proportion of free apps on the App Store ranged from 80% to 84%, but by early 2013, that had grown to 90%. And 6% of paid apps fell into the 99 cents price point, with Flurry also observing that it seems people want free content more than they want to avoid ads, or to have the highest quality experience possible.

The window for paid apps is definitely getting smaller, but Ms. Perez reports that there are still a few success stories out there to analyze for developers determined to try the paid upfront business model.

FruitJuice is a new concept in Apple notebook battery health. Built exclusively for Apple notebook computers, it provides monitoring, notifications, daily battery recommendations, guided maintenance and diagnostics to ensure that you achieve the longest runtime and lifespan from your battery.

In order to prolong its life, Apple recommends using your notebook battery on a regular basis. If you're not using it enough, then Apple recommends doing monthly maintenance on the battery to "keep the battery juices flowing" (see Apple's Battery resource). But how do you know if you're using it enough? Is the way you're using your battery shortening its life? FruitJuice is here to help demystify the process:

Active Guidance through Daily Recommendations:
(*) After running for 7 days, FruitJuice will begin to make daily recommendations for the total amount of time to spend on battery to keep it in top condition
(*) Recommendations are tailored to your usage patterns
(*) Flexible menu bar configuration allows you to see as much or as little information as you wish

Complete Power History:
(*) FruitJuice keeps a detailed record of your battery charge and discharge activity
(*) See how much time you spend on your machine and if it is on battery, charging or fully charged
(*) See totals and percentages for any range of dates

Guided Maintenance:
(*) FruitJuice will suggest a Maintenance Cycle upon installation to establish a baseline
(*) Notifications will let you know when to plug in or unplug your machine
(*) Subsequent Maintenance Cycles will only be recommended only if your usage falls outside Apple's guidelines

Configurable Notifications:
(*) Smarter battery management through configurable notifications
(*) Notifications to help you avoid the surprise of the "You are now running on reserve battery power" message

You can have FruitJuice tell you:
(*) Your percent charge remaining (including repeating intervals)
(*) Your estimated time remaining (including repeating intervals)
(*) When you have reached you daily battery target
(*) When you have reached a given percent while charging
(*) When your battery is fully charged (see Apple's Battery resource)
(*) FruitJuice will suggest a Maintenance Cycle only if your usage necessitates it.

Battery Health Information:
FruitJuice shows you a realistic assessment of the overall condition of your battery. It combines the battery condition, age, factory capacity and lifespan numbers to give you real-time insight into the health of your battery.

System Requirements:
(*) OS X 10.8 or later
(*) 3.2 MB

FruitJuice 2.0 is offered at the introductory sale price of $9.99 USD (50% off the normal price), or equivalent amount in other currencies and available worldwide through the Mac App Store in the Utilities category. The app will be priced at $19.99 following this initial special offer.
