Apple Brand Less 'Inspiring' Than Samsung - U.K. Survey

The BBC reports that Samsung's Galaxy S3 smartphone outsold Apple's iPhone in the final quarter of 2012, with Apple perceived as less "inspiring" than it was three years ago according to a brand survey by consultancy firm Added Value in its Cultural Traction 2013 report analyzing the "cultural vibrancy" of 160 brands across 15 sectors, involving more than 62,000 respondents in 10 countries.

However, Apple is still listed as number two behind Google in the top ten brands perceived to be the most "visionary, inspiring, bold and exciting" by Cultural Traction.

Your Next Smartphone Screen Could Be Made of Sapphire

TechnologyReview's Kevin Bullis reports that manufactured sapphire is incredibly strong and scratch resistant, and now falling costs and technology improvements could make it competitive with glass. Gorilla Glass is great, but iPhone screens can still shatter, says Bullis, but manufactured sapphire - a material that's used as transparent armor on military vehicles - is harder than any other natural material except diamond; and by some measures three times stronger than Gorilla Glass, also about three times more scratch resistant, and could become cheap enough to replace the glass display covers on mobile phones, which could mean smartphone screens that dont crack when you drop them and cant be scratched with keys, or even by a concrete sidewalk.

DOCKr Turns Your Tablet Into A Laptop, Extends Battery Runtime

If you find that you have to interrupt your tablet experience to find a charger, speakers, carrying case or docking station the DOCKr is for you This all-in-one tablet accessory means that your tablet experience will be enhanced and, most importantly, uninterrupted. The DOCKr is ideal for traveling, studying, doing business and expanding your iPad experience.

image

The DOCKr solves three problems for tablet owners.

1. The user's experience with the iPad is constantly interrupted. People have to leave their iPads to locate a carrying case, a docking station, a charger, speakers or a keyboard. The DOCKr allows a continuous, uninterrupted and fluid experience with the iPad. The all-in-one nature of the DOCKr solves this problem so users can watch movies, surf the internet, use apps, do business or take notes uninterrupted.

2. Tablet owners want more features. User feedback has shown that the most requested hardware features for the tablet are keyboards, additional battery, USB connections and better speakers. The DOCKr provides an all-in-one solution for each of these needs inside a durable polycarbonate case.

3. Tablet owners miss the familiar comforts and utility of their laptops. The DOCKr is the bridge between your laptop and your tablet allowing you to charge, carry, customize and continue your work.

What makes the DOCKr different from a laptop?

The DOCKr has many benefits of a laptop, but it does not allow for USB input, has no memory capabilities (it relies on the iPad for that), and the DOCKr keyboard is removable so you can use the DOCKr just as a docking station platform to watch movies or to give a presentation.

image

The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is built-in and provides up to 6-8 hours of extended battery life. Not only does it power your iPad, but the 2 USB ports and 1 Micro USB port can charge your other electronic devices.

This means up to 8 more hours of the things that keep you going... whether its listening to music, writing papers, corresponding with co-workers, or watching movies.

The extra battery life is ideal for travel or using your iPad on-the-go. You can rely on the DOCKr to give your iPad extended life in those moments when you need it most. Recharging the DOCKr at the end of the day is easy with the included charging cable.

The DOCKr is made of injection molded, polycarbonate plastic - the same material used in bulletproof glass.

Infographic - We're All Losers, But New Tech Can Help

160,000 phones are lost every day, and 96% of people try to access private data when they find a lost phone. Linquet, the Internet of Things company with the mission of linking everything to make everyday items "smart" and prevent them from being forgotten, lost, or stolen, today published an Infographic showing what huge losers we all are. It's true. Among other stats, The Big World of Lost Things Infographic shows the average person loses 9 items per day, a total of 200,000 in their lifetime. What's the number one item we lose? Cellphones top the charts, and the average lost phone costs the loser $900, with the total value of lost or stolen phones and their data costing Americans $30 billion.

"Face it, we're all losers," says Pooya Kazerouni, founder of Linquet. "We all have busy lives and are constantly forgetting or losing our phone, keys, bag, wallet, pet, purse, laptop--the list goes on and on. This is exactly why we invented Linquet. With our crowdfunding campaign in full swing we are giving people the opportunity to back the company and get early bird pricing on a unique cloud-based product every single one of us can benefit from."

image

The infographic shows Philadelphia is the top city for phone loss in the US, followed by Seattle, Oakland, and Long Beach. While Americans lose 160,000 phones every day, tablets and laptops aren't far behind. With the growing adoption of tablets, these handy mobile devices are quickly becoming one of the most frequently lost items at airports, and every 53 seconds a laptop is lost or stolen.

Linquet gives people an effortless way to keep tabs on everything important to them by allowing them to "linq" their valuables to their smartphone. Using Bluetooth technology, Linquet can be added ('"linqed") to a phone via the free Linquet app.

Now available for pre-order for the low price of $25 including registration and shipping to the U.S. and Canada at, Linquet Mini works with iOS devices and has a one year battery life, even with 24/7 use. About the size of two quarters laid side by side, Linquet Mini is so tiny it can easily be slipped into even the smallest wallets.

The free Linquet app will be available in the iTunes App Store this summer to coincide with the shipping of the Linquet Mini.
