Internet Wars: Samsung Overtakes Apple To Claim Number One Spot Globally For First Time In Terms Of Internet Usage - Web Analytics

Samsung overtook Apple globally for the first time in June to take number one spot in terms of internet usage, according to the StatCounter independent website analytics company. In the United States Google's browser Chrome overtook Microsoft's Internet Explorer for the first time in June.

StatCounter Internet Wars Report - Winners and Losers

These are some of the findings in a new report from the firms research arm, StatCounter Global Stats. The StatCounter Internet Wars Report Winners and Losers charts progress over the last 12 months in the battle of the internet between the worlds biggest tech firms including Apple, Google and Microsoft. The full report may be downloaded from:

The report charts winners and losers over the last 12 months in the battle to dominate the internet whether in the field of browsers, operating systems, search, mobile or social media, commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter.

The report finds that while 12 months ago, Nokia led globally in terms of internet usage, Samsung (25.47%) has leapfrogged both Apple (25.09%) and Nokia (21.96%) to take the lead in June 2013. In the US and UK however, Apple remains the clear leader.

While in May 2012 Chrome became the browser leader in terms of internet usage worldwide, it has now overtaken Internet Explorer for the first time in the United States as well. In June Chrome took the number one spot in the US at 34.02% (up from 23.84% 12 months ago). Over the same time frame IE declined to 32.46% (from 40.89%).

Other highlights include:

• Operating Systems: Windows 7 increases internet usage share despite launch of Windows 8 - XP refuses to lie down

• Social Media: Reports of Facebook decline appear exaggerated

• Twitter has greater referral influence in the UK than in the US
Search Engines: Google still dominates worldwide but more competitive in US where Bing makes some headway

StatCounter (http://www.statcounter.com) is used by companies, bloggers, self-employed people, charities and anyone who wants to measure activity on their website, blog or forum. Key features include ease of use, independence and ability to view website data in real time.

iOS 7 Leverages Retina iPhone App Assets to Improve '2x' Mode on Non-Retina iPads

MacRumors' Eric Slivka notes that one of the more subtle changes surfacing in Apple's iOS 7 beta 3 released to developers on Tuesday is a move to leverage the Retina assets included in iPhone-only apps to improve the viewing experience in "2x" mode on non-Retina iPads such as the iPad mini and the iPad 2.

Slivka observes that since the launch of the iPad, Apple has supported the use of iPhone-only apps on its tablet platform, allowing users to toggle between a "1x" mode where the app appears in an iPhone-sized window in the center of the iPad screen and a "2x" mode where pixels are doubled to allow the app to fill more of the iPad's screen. But up until iOS 6, this 2x pixel doubling has been performed on the non-Retina iPhone versions of the apps for non-Retina iPads, expanding a 480x320 app to fill a 960x640 space on the iPad display and resulting in jagged text and blurry images.

He says that's been fixed in iOS 7.

Compositions Intelligent Text Editor With Dropbox Support for iOS - Now Free

Dallas, Texas, based Capparsa, LLC has announced that its Compositions for iOS text editor app is now free. Available for both iOS and Mac OS X, Compositions is a multiplatform, Dropbox enabled text editor app that is focused on content creation. Capparsa is a Dallas, Texas based software company that primarily develops for Apple's iOS and Mac OS.

image

Compositions uses Dropbox to keep files in sync between your Mac, iPad, and iPhone/iPod touch. Simply login with your Dropbox credentials on the iOS app and it will begin to sync to the folder of your choice. On your Mac with Dropbox installed, simply open the files and make edits using Compositions.

Since the iOS app uses a user-initiated sync, files can edited locally while offline. That means if you're on a plane, train or somewhere with spotty internet access, you still have full access to all your files. Just make changes normally and when you get back online, tap sync to push all your changes.

The app uses a custom file format which gives it added features not found in other text editors. One key feature, "Snapshots", allows the user to take a snapshot of the document at any time, which is carried along with the file across all the devices. This enables the user to snapshot the document before making any major changes without having a fear of losing work if the changes are not wanted anymore. They can simply revert back to the snapshot and nothing is lost. Think of it as "source control" for writers.

Compositions also features a full screen mode for the iPhone and iPad. Simply double tap the bar at the top and it, along with the other interface elements, disappears leaving a nice full screen view to write in. Tap once at the thin white strip at the top to bring back the original interface.

If you need to edit your file on a computer that doesn't have Compositions installed, you can export your document as a .txt file at any time. After you make edits on your computer, you can re-import the .txt file to your document, and it's saved as a snapshot.

With these features and more, Compositions is a great tool for writers who want to stay mobile and be able to make edits to their creations on the go and with ease:

(*) Minimalist design

How To Turn An iPhone Into A Professional Video Camera

The Telegraph's Chris Stone notes that if you mention filming on a smartphone in professional video circles and you'll generally be met with a barrage of derision, and that while camera phone design has come a long way, the limitations are considerable when compared to a professional video camera.

However, Stone reports that a host of companies have developed innovative solutions to these problems, and that for The Telegraph's coverage of Glastonbury 2013 he put some of those accessories to the test to find out if it was possible to turn a smartphone into a professional journalism workhorse. He says that with an iPhone 5 and "a few" pieces of external hardware, he was able to shoot, edit and deliver instant on-the-ground video reports direct from the festival for immediate inclusion in a live blog and the YouTube channel "I've Just Seen"

Stone explains how he did it (hint: lots of money helps) here:
