iPhone 5 Demand Hasn't Dropped - Analysts

The Telegraph's Shane Richmond reports that according to analysts, demand for Apple's iPhone 5 has not dropped, despite reports that Apple has cut certain component orders

Richmond cites Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu in a letter to investors saying that "as far as we can tell, iPhone 5 demand remains robust," and that Apple's component order change could be due to "much improved yields meaning lower component builds and supplier shifts" - a view echoed by JP Morgan's Mark Moskowitz, and Baird analyst William Power raising his forecast for iPhone sales in the final months of 2012.

TSMC with 20nm SoC Most Likely To Secure Chip Orders From Apple, - Digitimes Research Analyst

Digitimes' Jessie Shen reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expected to start making an integrated AP/GPU solution for Apple, using 20nm SoC process technology, according to Digitimes Research analyst Nobunaga Chai.

Ms. Shen cites Mr. Chai indicating that TSMC could now be working on engineering samples of Apple's chips at 28nm although the foundry's first chip orders from Apple are unlikely to happen in 2013.

Previous reports in various Chinese-language media outlets had previously suggested that TSMC would secure orders from Apple later in the first quarter of 2013 to manufacture A6X processors using 28nm process technology. Mr. Chai says a new 28nm version of the existing A6X will power Apple's next-generation iPad and iPad mini devices, to be launched around the middle of 2013, and thinks the first chip orders from Apple will be for silicon made using its 20nm SoC process, and that the TSMC's 16nm FinFET process will play a key role in a future Apple "breakthrough" product.

TSMC Predicts Better-Than-Estimated Sales on Smartphone Chips

Bloomberg BusinessWeek's Tim Culpan reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) - the world’s largest contract producer of microprocessor chips, forecasts sales surpassing analysts’ estimates as demand for components used in phones and tablets continues to outstrip expectations.

Culpan says TSMC’s fourth-quarter profit jumped 32 percent as demand for mobile devices from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. spur semiconductor sales.
