IDC Raises Tablet Forecast for 2012 and Beyond As iOS Picks Up Steam, Android Gains Traction, and Windows Finally Enters the Market

With a strong competitive landscape, including surging Android tablet shipments and robust demand for Apple's new iPad mini, International Data Corporation (IDC) has increased its 2012 forecast for the worldwide tablet market to 122.3 million, up from its previous forecast of 117.1 million units.

In the latest forecast update of the Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, IDC also raised its 2013 forecast number to 172.4 million units, up from 165.9 million units. And by 2016 worldwide shipments should reach 282.7 million units, up from a previous forecast of 261.4 million units.

"Tablets continue to captivate consumers, and as the market shifts toward smaller, more mobile screen sizes and lower prices points, we expect demand to accelerate in the fourth quarter and beyond," saysTom Mainelli, research director, Tablets at IDC. "Android tablets are gaining traction in the market thanks to solid products from Google, Amazon, Samsung, and others. And Apple's November iPad mini launch, along with its surprise refresh of the full-sized iPad, positions the company well for a strong holiday season."

In addition to increasing the unit totals for 2013, IDC also updated its operating system splits for the year to reflect Android's growing strength in the tablet market. IDC now expects Android's worldwide tablet share to increase from 39.8% in 2011 to 42.7% for the full year of 2012. During that same time Apple's share will slip from 56.3% in 2011 to 53.8% in 2012. Long term, IDC predicts Windows-based tablets (including Windows 8 and Windows RT) will grab share from both iOS and Android, growing from 1% of the market in 2011 to 2.9% in 2012, on its way to 10.3% in 2016.

"The breadth and depth of Android has taken full effect on the tablet market as it has for the smartphone space," says Ryan Reith, program manager for IDC's Mobile Device Trackers. "Android tablet shipments will certainly act as the catalyst for growth in the low-cost segment in emerging markets given the platform's low barrier to entry on manufacturing. At the same time, top-tier companies like Samsung, Lenovo, and ASUS are all launching Android tablets with comparable specs, but offered at much lower price points."

Once again, IDC's increase in tablet shipments comes at the expense of eReaders. IDC lowered its forecast for eReaders for 2012 and beyond. While the front-lit eReader offerings from Amazon and Barnes & Noble have captured the interest of a subset of consumers who prefer a dedicated eReader, most buyers are gravitating toward multi-use tablet products and finding a 'good enough' reading experience on these traditional back-lit tablets. IDC now expects 2012 eReader shipments to top out at 19.9 million units, down from the 27.7 million units that shipped in 2011.

Which Tablet Has The Best Battery Life?

Which? blogger Tim Gee notes that just like smartphones, any tablet wishing to become a Best Buy has to deliver when it comes to battery life. So to separate the best from rest, every tablet Which? tests is tested in lab conditions to see how long it lasts when browsing the web on wi-fi and watching videos.

To ensure the tests are fair, Which? sets the screen brightness to 200 nits (measured using a light meter) before performing each task, so every tablet has to perform in the same conditions.

As the size of the screen can make such an impact on battery life Which? divided the tablets into two groups, those with a screen size of 7.9-inches and smaller, and those 9.4-inches and larger.

Apple wins the 10-inch tablet battery life category by quite a margin, the iPad with Retina display not only beating the competition comfortably, but surpassing the Apple iPad 2 by almost 4 hours, while the iPad 2 in turn manages around an hour longer than the next nearest Android challenger, while Microsoft's Surface RT tablet also lasted eight and a half hours - around half an hour longer than Google's new Nexus 10 tablet.

When it comes to 7-inch tablets, Apple wins out again with the new Apple iPad mini managing over 13 hours of web browsing - more than 3 hours more than the next best challenger, Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.

Windows 8 Tablets Will Beat Apple & Android - "No Compromise"

TMCnet's Tom Keating says after using and testing the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700t (XE700T1C) for a few weeks he's come to the conclusion that Windows 8 tablets will without a doubt beat Apple iPad tablets and Android tablets.

Keating argues that the reason is simple and can be summed up in just two words - "No compromise". With Apple tablets and even Android tablets there is always some compromise.

With Apple he says the biggest compromise is the lack of Flash support, and that and if he hears one more person tell him Flash is dead and HTML5 is the way to go he's going to smack them, noting that he's lost count of how many times on his iPad he's visited a website that uses Flash video and is unable to play it.

[Editor's note: I have to agree. I encounter video content several times a day every day on the iPad that I'm locked out of. As Tom Keating says, very frustrating. Flash is anything but dead, and not likely to be any time in the foreseeable future. Tim for Apple to climb down from its peevish dismissal of Flash and make it work with the iOS. Ed.]

Keating continues with a lengthy inventory of iOS and Android compromises with which Windows 8 tablets are not afflicted, and summarizes that he has no doubt that Windows 8 tablets will take over Apple's tablet dominance.

He makes a strongly reasoned case, but look at the real world sales performance of Microsoft's Surface and other Windows 8 tablets so far.......:

Mobile NFC Growth Forecast Scaled Back to $110bn in Transactions by 2017 as iPhone 5 Omits Chipset

Hampshire, UK-based Juniper Research has published its revised forecasts for the global NFC market, significantly scaling back its growth estimates for the North American and Western European markets.

NFC Retail Transaction Values Reduced

While the report finds that by 2017 the proportion of NFC-enabled smartphones will be only marginally below previous estimates, global NFC retail transaction values are now expected to reach $110bn in 2017, significantly below the $180bn previously forecast.

According to the report, Apple's decision to omit an NFC chipset from the iPhone 5 has reduced retailer and brand confidence in the technology, leading to reduced POS (Point of Sale) rollouts and fewer NFC campaigns. This in turn will lead to lower NFC visibility amongst consumers and fewer opportunities to make payments, threatening a cycle of NFC indifference in the short term.

A Two Year Lag for North America & Western Europe

"While many vendors have introduced NFC-enabled smartphones, Apple's decision is a significant blow for the technology, particularly given its previous successes in educating the wider public about new mobile services," says report author Dr. Windsor Holden. "Without their support, it will be even more difficult to persuade consumers and retailers to embrace what amounts to a wholly new means of payment."

The report found that Apple's move would impact most dramatically on markets in North America and Western Europe, where transaction values would exhibit a two year lag on previous forecasts as retailers delay POS investments.

South Korea & Japan Unaffected

Conversely, retail transactions in NFC's heartland in Japan and Korea are likely to experience little or no impact from the decision. It also observed that lower than expected adoption of Google Wallet allied to a delayed launch of the ISIS NFC project in the US would also have a negative effect on that market.

Other key findings from the report include:

• Despite Apple's decision, NFC trial consumer feedback e.g. at the London Olympic venues and in Singapore - has been extremely positive, suggesting strong latent interest when services are more widely deployed.

• Both MasterCard and Visa have certified several NFC service solutions and datacentres, including those of Giesecke & Devrient and Gemalto

The NFC Mobile Payments ~ No Contact Needed whitepaper is available to download from the Juniper website together with further details of the full report and the attendant forecast dataset:

Texting behind the wheel is now officially the most dangerous distraction according to the AAA (see item below). TextBuster was designed to prevent vehicle accidents while also safeguarding your loved ones, employees and everyone that operates a motorized vehicle.

The TextBuster sends a blocking signal via Bluetooth to the user's phone. This is done automatically every time the user enters the vehicle. The TextBuster will not interfere with any other hands-free or Bluetooth items in the vehicle.

The TextBuster is a patented device that will disable the data functions to the drivers phone only while inside the vehicle. TextBuster prevents the driver from accessing all text, email or internet functions while driving their vehicle. TextBuster does not block incoming or outgoing phone calls.

The TextBuster is a patented device that will disable the data functions to the drivers phone only while inside the vehicle. TextBuster prevents the driver from accessing all text, email or internet functions while driving their vehicle. TextBuster does not block incoming or outgoing phone calls.

Annual Estimate of Cell Phone Crashes 2010

The National Safety Council created the Annual Estimate of Cell Phone Crashes because data about cell phone use as a factor in motor vehicle crashes is currently under-reported. In jurisdictions where police attempt to collect this data, they must rely almost entirely on driver self-reports or witness reports of cell phone use at the time of the crash, resulting in significant under reporting.

The NSC estimate includes property damage only crashes as well as injury and fatal crashes.

Estimates
• The NSC model estimates 21 percent of crashes or 1.1 million crashes in 2010 involve talking on handheld and hands-free cell phones.
• The model estimates an additional 3 percent or more crashes or a minimum of 160,000 of crashes in 2010 involve text messaging.
• Thus a total of a minimum of 24% of crashes involve drivers talking and texting on cell phones.

Penguin Group (USA) Launches THIS IS NOT AN APP

Penguin Group (USA) has announced the launch of This Is Not an App for iOS and Android - an interactive adaptation of Keri Smith's This Is Not a Book. This Is Not an App is the second creativity app based on a Keri Smith book and follows last years Wreck This App, one of Penguin's bestselling mobile apps.

image

Through a series of iOS and Android specific prompts, users will actually determine the final product and content of the app. This app transforms a phone or tablet into a digital time travel device, an electronic mess-maker, a choose-your-own adventure, a handheld nature emulator, an ethnographic study of the room you are sitting in, or a virtual collection of objects from the world around us. All will be shaped by the imagination of the user. This Is Not an App is now available for download through the iTunes Store, Google Android Marketplace and at Barnes and Noble for Nook ($4.99).

In 2011, Perigee launched Wreck This App based on Smiths popular creativity book Wreck This Journal, which has sold over a million copies. Fueled by media coverage from USA Today, Wired's "Geek Dad" blog, and MSNBC.com, and a plug as Gizmodos App of the Day, and featured in both New and Noteworthy and Whats Hot at the iTunes store, Wreck This App quickly become one of the bestselling apps in Penguin Group history.

Wreck This Journal has an avid following that clearly contributed to the success of Wreck This App. Since weve seen similar reader enthusiasm and momentum for This Is Not A Book, an app was a natural next step. The prompts and ideas will give users a way to discover a world of creative potential using their devices, says Meg Leder, Executive Editor at Perigee Books.

This Is Not an App replicates the format of Smith's book with the interactive tools that made Wreck This App so popular, allowing users to draw, paint, drip and smear. It also includes a new function for shattering.

"This Is Not an App introduces readers to a world of imaginative possibilities, as they begin to see the app as more than just an app, and instead as a dare, a thought garden, a parallel universe, and even a friend," says Keri Smith.

The resulting creations can be easily shared on Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter.

Priced at $4.99, This Is Not an App is now available for download through the iTunes Store, Google Android Marketplace and at Barnes and Noble for Nook.
