Can iPhone 4S Users Get Away with Using Siri Under the No Phones While Driving Ban?
International Business Times' Ranina Sanglap reports that Apple iPhone 4S users who thought they could get away from total bans against using electronic communications devices while driving by using Siri will still be held accountable if federal regulators will have their way.
Sanglap notes that the U.S. National Transportation Board issued a recommendation last week that state governments in the U.S. should ban all driver use of cell phones, handheld or hands-free phones, as well as other portable electronic devices except in cases of emergency, and while the board doesn't have the power to force states to impose the proposed ban but its recommendations do carry significant weight with federal regulators.
The report notes that response to the proposed ban has been largely negative, but in your editor's estimation, the board has made the right call. Research has shown that handheld or hands-free, using a cell phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident by up to 4x. A study cited by The Coalition for Cell Phone Free Driving says statistical likelihood of being involved in a motor vehicle accident rises by a factor of 4 during cellphone use -- greater than with low-level alcohol impairment, and that it slows a drivers reaction time by 18 percent.
As for the counter-argument that talking on a hands-free phone should be no different than talking to a passenger inside the automobile, that is not the case, a reason being that the person at the other end of a telephone conversation has no sense of what is happening in the car and is unable to react or just shut up immediately should dangerous set of circumstances develop.
An Ontario Medical Association report, based on a meta-analysis of studies from around the world found talking on a cellphone leads to a substantial reduction in the drivers field of view, changes of driving speed, decreased the distance maintained between vehicles, resulted in more frequent panic braking, less mirror-checking and slowed response time to traffic light changes.
Sanglap's article cites an analysis by Jim Hedlund, a safety consultant and former National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official, that examined 300 cellphone studies for the Governors' Highway Traffic Safety Administration and concluded that there is little evidence that hands-free mobile phone use is less risky than handheld use, but suggests that the real solution would be more responsible attitudes ans self-discipline exercised by drivers.

How to Copy Music from Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to Your Computer for Free
Lifehacker's Adam Dachis says:
Apple, true to form, makes it simple to put media and files on your iDevice but the road really only goes one way. It can be pretty difficult to copy anything (or everything) back to your computer without a lot of trouble and sacrifice, but it's even harder to find a good, free solution to that problem amongst the many choices available. You could spend the better part of your week sifting through your options, or you could just read this post instead.
We've tackled this issue before, but things have changed for the better since 2008. Here's a look at your best options for transferring media from your iDevice back to your computer, free of charge. We've broken up this guide into Windows, Mac, and Linux sections, so just choose the one that you need.

Tablet Display Shoot-Out: iPad 2 vs. Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet
9To5Mac's Christian Zibreg reports on a tablet display shootout among Amazon's Kindle Fire, Apple's iPad 2, and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet conducted by Dr. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies Corporation of Amherst, N.H.
Dr. Soneira set out to find out which device packed the best IPS display. Zibreg points out that LG Displays, the worlds leading manufacturer of IPS LCDs, is the supplier of IPS panels for the three devices used in the shoot-out, but the iPad 2, the test note said, remains the gold standard in tablet displays while Motorola's Xoom and Acers Iconia Tab serve as prime examples of low-quality LCD displays.
The report notes that the Fires display is on par with iPad 2's and Nook Tablets in most respects, except for two important aspects - limited gray-scale rendering, and an anti-reflective treatment with about 70 percent higher reflectance levels compared to the iPad 2 and more than double the reflectance of the Nook Tablet - bad for reading outdoors or in brightly lightes indoor areas. Meanwhile, Barnes & Nobles Nook Tablet has the lowest reflectance of any tablet DisplayMate ever tested, showing 28 percent lower reflectance than even the iPad 2, and gray-scale rendering more accurate than most living room HDTVs.

iPad Keyboard Showdown
LAPTOP Mag's Michael A. Prospero observes that the iPad's virtual keyboard is definitely good, but nothing feels quite as nice as clickety-clacking away on a physical keyboard. According to Lenovo and Qualcomm, 71 percent of small businesses surveyed said they are using tablets at work as an additional device, not a replacement for their PCs. But with the right case, complete with a physical QWERTY Bluetooth keyboard, that fact might be about to change.
Many accessory manufacturers are ready to step in with external keyboards, but which one offers the best combination of price, portability, protection, and tactile feedback? Prospero set about finding out which one is worth your investment: Belkin Keyboard Folio, ClamCase for iPad 2, Kensington Keyfolio Pro, Targus Versavu Keyboard and Case for iPad, or Zaggfolio for iPad 2.

2012, Apple's iOS Odyssey
Computerworld's Jonny Evans says that what defines Apple [AAPL] in 2012 will be the evolution of the company's vision of "Post-PC". Product will include the iPhone 5, iPad 3, and new implementations of iOS, including the Apple television.
Evans predicts that resistance to the whole notion of the post-PC era will continue, hampering the opportunity to introduce a fully cloud-based development environment with which iPad users can at least build simple apps. When this happens, evolution will inevitably enable full-scale app development on models of the Apple tablet.

Xiaomi Phone Almost Passes The iPhone to Become Best Selling Phone in China This Year
M.I.C. Gadget's Chris Chang reports that Chinese low-end smartphone maker Xiaomi has announced that they will team up with China Unicom to offer the Xiaomi Phone through the telecom operator, just like what Apple did. And guess what, the company sold out all of its inventory of 100,000 Xiaomi phones in three hours when the company started a new round of online sales. This record is definitely comparable to what Apple achieved for the sales of iPhone 4 or 4S.
Chang says that with iPhone 4S already launched in several countries, the latest-model Apple phone is not yet available in China. Apple's iPhone 4 is still a big hit in China, but there are more and more Chinese smartphone users choosing Xiaomi Phone as an upgrade from their Nokia Symbian-powered phones. Why? Two reasons says Chang. Xiaomi Phone is "cheap as hell," one could purchase two Xiaomi phones with the money to purchase an iPhone 4 or 4S, and secondly, Xiaomi successfully created an illusion of feverish demand for its smartphone. Just like Apple, Xiaomi does not have its own manufacturing facility, it has faced a challenge to produce enough handsets to meet the demand. However, the company told the public that they do not lack stock for the Xiaomi Phone, while customers failed to place an order for it since its sold out. Chang suggests that actually, Xiaomi is trying to build hype and mystique by keeping the phones rare, and at the same time, by advertising that the phones weren't rare. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands perhaps millions of people likely tried to buy the Xiaomi Phone but couldn't, and now they're telling their friends and coworkers about how quickly the phone sold out. Thus, more and more people will stay tuned for the sale of the Xiaomi Phone, and grab one right away when the phone becomes available in stock.

The Journal Science Unveils New "Science Population App" for iPad Users
A new interactive, multimedia-enhanced iPad application from the journal Science features award-winning journalism and peer-reviewed research on global population growth and its impacts on education, health, quality-of-life, economics and natural resources.
With the planet's population clicking past 7 billion this year and projected to reach 9.3 billion by 2050, the new Science Population App pulls together authoritative content from the journal, plus additional videos, podcasts and interactive graphics in a package that iPad users can explore when, where and how they need it.
Researchers expect almost all of the population growth over the next four decades to be concentrated in the world's poorest countries, raising urgent questions such as how best to prevent food shortages. Yet, in other regions, populations of working-age people are expected to shrink, resulting in economic pressures. Science iPad App users can tap on a graphic "film strip," then swipe viewing panes sideways, up or down to interact with five media-rich sections of content on population-related issues. Readers can explore, for example, the long-running debate on whether family planning programs help reduce high fertility rates, the accuracy of current population prediction models, and whether more people may sometimes trigger positive economic shifts.
Science Publisher Beth Rosner, director of Publishing and Membership Services at the nonprofit American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), said the new App represents another important step toward making high-quality scientific information accessible to an increasingly diverse global audience.
"By making this Science Population content available through the Apple App Store, we hope to introduce an even broader international community to science generally," said Rosner. "Whether our readers are scientists and engineers, or high-school students and teachers, we want to play a role in promoting public interest in the scientific enterprise. We also hope of course that some App users will decide to support the AAAS mission by becoming members."
Science previously rolled out a free iPhone application, Science Mobile, to make selected news content available to the public, and the journal's Web sites are constantly undergoing enhancements to improve each visitor's experience, said Stewart Wills, Science Editorial Director, Web & New Media. (See http://www.sciencemag.org.)
"Like many Web publishers, we're seeing steady increases in the percentage of users who access our content on mobile devices," Wills said. "The new Science Population App is a natural evolution of what we're doing on the Web. It's an exciting opportunity to extend the scientific discussion on a vital topic."
Ian King, director of marketing for AAAS and Science said: "A primary objective of the new Science Population App was to provide useful content through platforms that are both convenient and exciting for them. The iPad technology lets us leverage outstanding Science content to create a meaningful experience for our readers."
The new App is available for $4.99 via the Apple iTunes Store online. (Search for the "Science Population" App.) AAAS members also can access the Science Population iPad App by logging onto the MemberCentral Web site at: http://bit.ly/rrdc1U
AAAS membership is open to all and conveys 51 issues of Science per year, plus other benefits such as Policy Alerts, Science Roundups, travel and product discounts, and more. Membership helps to support AAAS programmatic activities related to science literacy and education, science policy, international research collaboration and science diplomacy, and public engagement with science and technology. For more information on membership, see:
http:// http://www.aaas.org/membership
The new App reflects work by a team of AAAS-Science staff, including Gilbert Chin, Corinna Cohn, Will Collins, Andrew Green, Martyn Green, Walter Jones, Ian King, Kerry Klein, Tara Marathe, Leslie Roberts, Andrew Whitesell and Stewart Wills.

First iOS App Released Using Core Image for Real-Time Photo Effects
Wave, developer of Flare for iPhone, has announced Process 1.1.1, a real-time image editing app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. A photographer, filmmaker, and avid post-processing aficionado known for the first true HDR video technique, developer Alaric Cole was not impressed with the state of the current iPhone photo editing applications. The fatal flaw of many of them was the plethora of progress bars and waiting screens. Believing the iPhone to be all about instant gratification, the developer built Process with the goal of never making you wait, or getting in your way.
In Process, every adjustment made, such as contrast, saturation, white balance, or exposure, is displayed immediately. Moving a slider or selecting a color displays the change in real-time. Built on Core Image and OpenGL, Process is made for speed. Even saving an 8 megapixel photo to the Camera Roll is instantaneous. In fact, it's sometimes unsettling how fast things can be, as iPhone users have grown accustomed to the slow "processing" screens of Hipstamatic and other previous-generation photo apps.

There's no history or undo in Process, because any change is able to be modified, disabled, or removed in a non-linear fashion. Process is completely non-destructive, and multiple versions of an original can be saved or shared.
Daring Fireball said, "It's apps like Process that make today's camera market so fascinating." Process is the new breed of image post-processing apps for mobile.
Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, 3/4G iPod touch and iPad
(*) Requires iOS 5.0 or later
(*) 2.7 MB
Process 1.1.1 is $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Photo & Video category.

Smartphone Multi-Core Processors Begin Domination in Q3 2011 - Strategy Analytics
Multi-core smartphone applications processors gained strong traction in Q3 2011, accounting for almost 25 percent of total smartphone applications processors shipped in Q3 2011, according to the Multi-Core Smartphone Applications Processor Quarterly Market Tracker from the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies (HCT) service. This growth can be attributed to strong holiday quarter demand for flagship multi-core smartphones from major smartphone manufacturers.
Manufacturers use multi-core processors for smartphone feature differentiation. According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung's multi-core applications processors for smartphones led the market with 57 percent unit shipment share in Q3 2011, followed by Qualcomm with 18 percent, Texas Instruments and NVIDIA.
In contrast to the single-core processor market, stand-alone applications processors dominated the multi-core smartphone applications processor market, which accounted for 90 percent of total multi-core smartphone applications processors shipped in Q3 2011.
According to Stuart Robinson, Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, Despite being bit late to market with dual-core processors, Texas Instruments ranked number three and took 13 percent share in the multi-core smartphone applications processor market in Q3 2011, thanks to its high-profile design-wins. According to Strategy Analytics, dual-core OMAP processors accounted for about 20 percent of Texas Instruments total smartphone applications processors shipped in Q3 2011."
According to Sravan Kundojjala, Senior Analyst, "Smartphones with multi-core applications processors will make up 17 percent of the smartphones shipped in 2011, up from almost negligible shipment numbers in 2010. Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and NVIDIA will benefit from this growth and account for almost all multi-core smartphone processors shipped in 2011."
Strategy Analytics Presents Predictions for 2012: The Year of the Super-Platform
The arrival of the media super-platform is one of the key predictions made by Strategy Analytics as it looks forward to 2012 in its latest report, 12 for 12: Digital Home And Media Predictions for Olympics Year. Connected TV, multiscreen and smart home all feature prominently in the predictions, with much of the discussion centering on the plans of Apple, Google and Microsoft, as they seek to influence the future direction of the digital home and the media value chain. Among the highlights, the Strategy Analytics Digital Consumer team predicts the arrival into the mainstream of the super-platform, a proprietary ecosystem of digital media, distribution, devices and storage on a massive scale. The report is available for complimentary download from the Strategy Analytics website.
The Super-platform will impact every facet of audience consumption, will diminish the role of the device, marginalize standalone content providers and raise the barriers to entry to historically unimaginable levels, says Ed Barton, Director, Digital Media Strategies. Now it is no longer enough to just be a multibillion dollar market leader to play this game. Bring an addressable market of over one hundred million devices, global territorial coverage, tier one content relationships across all entertainment formats and tens of billions of dollars to invest over the next decade, or go home.
The report also predicts several key statistical milestones in 2012, including:
The global installed base of connected/smart TVs will grow by 68 percent to reach 200 million units;
Social networks will generate global revenues of more than $7 Billion through advertising, virtual items and premium services; and
2012 will be the first year online gaming revenue outstrips packaged games, generating 45 percent of global revenue against 43 percent for packaged games.
