A6-Based iPad mini Without Retina Display In The Works

9To5Mac's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is testing a new iPad mini that includes a faster processor but not a Retina display, according to references in the iOS 7 SDK sent to 9To5Mac by a developer that were located inside of a hidden file that lists all supported iOS 7 devices, and state that the devices include the s5l8950x processor, which is the same A6 system-on-a-chip that's inside of Apple's iPhone 5, and which can be expected to offer significant speed improvements for the iPad mini compared to the current A5-based model, but Gurman also infers that this potential iPad mini model will lack a Retina displaCharles W. Microsoft Surface Sales Numbers Revealed As "Shockingly Hideous"

The Register's Neil McAllister notes that in Microsoft's annual 10-K report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), published on Tuesday, the company reported actual Surface revenue figures for the first time and they're not good. In fact they're dreadful.

McAllister says that according to the report, Microsoft's total Surface revenue for all of fiscal 2013 amounted to just $853 million - nearly $50 million less than the $900 million charge Redmond took when it discounted its remaining Surface RT inventory by $150 per box. And even more mind-numbing, that $900m writedown was related to Surface RT only, but the $853m revenue figure includes sales of Surface RT and Surface Pro combined, which are unlikely to have covered Microsoft's costs for the Surface launch, especially when you consider the massive marketing push it gave the ill-fated devices.

McAllister further observes that in its 10-K filing, Microsoft reports increasing its sales and marketing budget for the Windows Division in 2013 by a jaw-dropping $1 billion, which included an $898m increase in advertising costs "associated primarily with Windows 8 and Surface," - ergo: Microsoft spent more in a single year advertising the Windows 8 and Surface launches than it took in from Surface sales that same year.

Testing Google's Chromecast for Apple Users

TidBits' Josh Centers maintains that Apple TV is Apples most underrated device, but one of the most important for the company's future direction. Consequently, he was intrigued when Google announced its Chromecast last week - a $35 HDMI dongle that does nothing on its own, but relies on the Chrome Web browser and compatible apps to cast content to it - a bit like Apple's AirPlay.

Centers says he was was fascinated by the device and ordered one immediately.

Tablet Adoption Rates Cool in Second Quarter, According to CEA's Quarterly Tablet Report

Four in ten (41 percent) online U.S. consumers indicate they own a tablet, roughly on par with ownership rates reported in March 2013 (40 percent), according to research released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). CEA's Consumer Outlook on Tablets: Q3 2013 report examines trend information on consumer behavior and sentiment regarding tablet computers from April through June 2013.

Following a dip in the first quarter, tablet purchase intent appears to have rebounded. Four in ten (40 percent) online U.S. adults indicate they plan to purchase a tablet computer within the next two years, a 33 percent jump from March 2013. Looking even further ahead, nearly three in four (72 percent) consumers say they expect to purchase a tablet at some point in the future.

"Tablets faced a relatively stagnant second quarter in 2013, after several consecutive quarters of strong growth," says Kevin Tillmann, senior research analyst, market research, CEA. "However, an increase in consumers purchase intent indicates optimism. Many consumers are waiting for the next generation of models to upgrade their existing devices."

Among the most popular tablet activities this quarter is playing games, which moved into the top spot, replacing social networking, for primary use based on online conversations. Watching movies remained second, messaging moved to third, while social networking and shopping round out the top five most popular tablet activities as consumers continue to use these devices primarily for entertainment.

"With nearly half of U.S. households expected to own a tablet in the next 12-18 months, tablets are undeniably impacting how consumers view and enjoy digital content," says Tillmann. "As we move through 2013, anticipation runs high this year for the next wave of tablets to include new and innovative features. Striking the right chord with consumers expectations will be imperative to resuming the growth trends weve seen prior to this quarters purchase stagnation."

According to CEA's semi-annual U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts (July 2013) (http://goo.gl/E1iZ4j) released last week, sales of mobile connected devices, namely smartphones and tablets, continue to drive growth for the entire CE industry. U.S. unit tablet shipments are estimated to reach 87.1 million by the end of 2013 (a 45 percent increase from 2012), while tablet revenues are estimated to reach $27.3 billion in 2013 (a nine percent increase from 2012).

Beginning in September, CEA will launch a new bi-annual tracking report on smartphones to examine trend information on consumer behavior and sentiment regarding these devices.

The Consumer Outlook on Tablets reports are released on the last Monday of the month following the close of each quarter. The series of reports was designed and formulated by CEA Market Research, the most comprehensive source of sales data, forecasts, consumer research and historical trends for the consumer electronics industry. Econ Technologies Releases InterConneX 1.0 for the iPad

Econ Technologies has released the completely new InterConneX 1.0 for the iPad. InterConneX is a file management and file sharing app for the iPad. With InterConneX you can create a repository of files so that you can store and organize files and folders in one location on an iPad just like on a Mac. In addition to managing and storing files, InterConneX allows you to share your files and folders between other iPads running InterConneX and Macs running ChronoSync or ChronoAgent. Best of all InterConneX is a free no ad app for the iPad.

image

InterConneX makes file management on an iPad easy. iPads and iPhones require that all files be stored within a single app - this is called sandboxing. This means that a Pages document is stored within the Pages app, a photo is stored within the Photos app, and so on. InterConneX allows you to create a repository of files so that you can store, organize, and open files in one location on an iPad just like on a Mac.

InterConneX keeps your iPad connected. iPads contain limited space but with InterConneX you can have access to all your files, all the time. InterConneX connects to other iPads running InterConneX and Macs running ChronoSync or ChronoAgent. Grab any files off your Mac and copy new files back to your Mac or share files with other user's iPads or Macs. That's a direct connection with no cloud required.

In addition to releasing InterConneX, ChronoSync has been updated to version 4.4 adding InterConneX connectivity. ChronoSync can now synchronize files directly from a Mac to an iPad running InterConneX, no cloud required. ChronoSync has always been the solution for keeping files synchronized between two or more Macs. Now you can add iPads to the mix and keep your files synchronized between Macs and iPads. As always, all existing ChronoSync users update for free. We are continuously updating all our apps and never charge for new versions. No user is ever left behind.

InterConneX is the File Management and File Sharing app for the iPad. InterConneX will run on iOS 5 or 6. InterConneX is a free no ad app and is available from the Apple App Store. InterConneX for the iPhone will be released late summer 2013.

ChronoSync is the automated synchronization and backup application for Mac OS X that can synchronize, backup, and create bootable backups. ChronoSync for Mac runs on Macintosh computers and is designed to work on Mac OS X 10.6 and higher. Download and try the demo, or purchase ChronoSync for $40.

ChronoAgent runs on a Mac and provides a direct connection to InterConneX on an iPad or ChronoSync on another Mac. ChronoAgent for Mac runs on Macintosh computers and is designed to work on Mac OS X 10.5 and higher. Download and try the demo, or purchase ChronoAgent for $10.

Guide for iPad 1.4 Updated With New Look For iOS 7

Stopframe Ltd. has announced a substantial update to its revolutionary guidebook app, Guide for iPad, which adds a new look for iOS 7. Available today, version 1.4 sees new fonts, gradients, a new icon plus new artworks that reflects the upcoming iOS 7 from Apple. This update also introduces two new tutorials to the extensive amount of guidance and tips already included within the app.

image

iOS 7 has a whole new design that's packed with color, animation and layered effects. It's also introduces a new font - Helvetica Neue Light - which maintains the characteristics of the original Helvetica, but looks stunning on a Retina Display. Guide for iPad version 1.4 reflects these changes with new gradient backgrounds, a new icon, updated artwork, colors and use of Helvetica Neue Light. As a result, the app looks amazing on both iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices.

Version 1.4 of the app also introduces two new tutorials. The first reveals how to use Google Maps on iPad. Users will discover how to use Street View, get turn-by-turn directions and view local information. The second tutorial explains how to use Speak Selection. This accessibility feature enables the iPad to read selected text out-loud. It's particularly helpful for those with impaired sight, but also a fun way to relay messages to friends and family. Both tutorials are available at no extra cost via an app update for existing users.

Stopframe's app reinvents the guidebook with a modern, flat design that removes faux textures, bezels and gradients. Chapters are colour-coded, enabling users to instinctively navigate the app. Animated text fades and moves across the screen, and interactive content makes learning easy and fun.

By focusing on the user experience and stripping out unnecessary features, users will find it easier to focus on what's important: discovering new ways to use their iPad.

(*) Updated with a new look for iOS 7
(*) A re-imagining of what a guide should be
(*) Bold design, animated text and interactive tutorials
(*) Multiple quizzes to test your knowledge
(*) A great way to show off the magical capabilities of iPad

Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5, iPod touch (3rd/4th/5th generation), and iPad
