Smartphone Penetration Surpasses 60 Percent in U.S. Mobile Phone Market - comScore

In the latest tranche of released data from comScore MobiLens and Mobile Metrix, reporting key trends in the U.S. smartphone industry for July 2013, Apple ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer with 40 percent OEM market share, while Google Android led as the #1 smartphone platform with 52 percent platform market share. Google Sites ranked as the top mobile media property, while Facebook was the top individual app.

Smartphone OEM Market Share

143.3 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (60 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in July, up 3 percent since April. Apple ranked as the top OEM with 40.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers (up 1.2 percentage points from April). Samsung ranked second with 24.1 percent market share (up 2.1 percentage points), followed by HTC with 8 percent, Motorola with 6.9 percent and LG with 6.8 percent.

image

Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in July with 51.8 percent market share, followed by Apple with 40.4 percent (up 1.2 percentage points), BlackBerry with 4.3 percent, Microsoft with 3 percent and Symbian with 0.3 percent.

image

Google Sites ranked as the top web property on smartphones, reaching 92.6 percent of the mobile media audience (mobile browsing and app usage), followed by Facebook (86.3 percent), Yahoo! Sites (81.7 percent) and Amazon Sites (66.8 percent). Facebook ranked as the top smartphone app, reaching 76.1 percent of the app audience, followed by five Google-owned apps: YouTube (53.7 percent), Google Play (53.6 percent), Google Search (53.5 percent), Google Maps (46.2 percent) and Gmail (45.0 percent).

comScore Mobile Metrix provides mobile audience measurement across smartphones and tablets. Using a combination of panel and census-based measurement methods, Mobile Metrix offers an unduplicated view of mobile browsing and app audiences at the media property, website and individual app level.

MobiLens data is derived from an intelligent online survey of a nationally representative sample of mobile subscribers age 13 and older. Data on mobile phone usage refers to a respondents primary mobile phone and does not include data related to a respondents secondary device.

iBooks vs Kindle

Clark of Clark's Tech Blog explains why he prefers iBooks to Kindle even though he has a fair number of Kindle books, primarily because, especially in academic publishing, Amazon's selection is vastly better than Apples. However for reading he says he simply prefers Apple's reader because of the following factors:

1. Text Display that lets you read from 8 different fonts in addition to the book's font. The iOS Kindle app recently added fonts but there are only 5 fonts and of those Clark says only Georgia is really acceptable.

2. Organization. Say what you will about organizing books under iTunes but its power cant be downplayed.

3. Transitions and Page Flipping. Unfortunately the Mac version of Kindle has no transitions at all. Its abrupt and if you accidentally flip too many pages you may not notice it. iBooks also lets you use scrolling instead of page flipping.

4. Copying. With iBooks you can simply copy and paste sections of text. With iOS Kindle you can share them to Twitter or Facebook but not copy them to the clipboard, although the Mac version, does have a copy function, although inexplicably it does not use the menu (which is greyed out) even though it does recognize Command>C.

5. Notes. The iOS version of Kindle seems oriented around Twitter sized notes. The iOS version of iBooks gives you a lot of room for note taking with a small snippet of the text your are adding a note to.

6. Buying Books. Kindle on iOS is limited here due to Apple annoying app store rules, but Clark says buying in iOS is very enjoyable. However, Amazon simply has a much better selection hands down.

7. Authorization. If you open a book on too many devices the Kindle wont let you open it on any others.

Apple To Release 4.5-inch/5-inch iPhones In 2014 - Analyst

9To5Mac's Mark Gurman reports that according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi-Kuo, Apple's 2014 iPhone update is set to include a model with a larger display, with Mr. Kuo projecting the screen increase to be between 4.5 and 5 inches, also noting that the display will continue to be based on in-cell touch screen technology, that was introduced with the iPhone 5, allowing Apple to install thinner displays.

Gurman also notes that the Wall Street Journal recently reported that Apple was testing displays up to 6-inches in size, and is rumored to be working on a 13-inch tablet for 2014, noting that Mr. Kuo hints that the long in the tooth iPad 2 may be discontinued next year.

In the nearer term, Mr. Kuo expects Apple to release at least two new iPads this year: an iPad mini with a Retina display, a fifth-generation iPad that looks like a larger iPad mini, and perhaps a non-Retina iPad mini for cost considerations.

"Writing On The iPad" A Textbook For iOS Automation

TUAW's TJ Luoma says "Writing On The iPad: Text Automation with Editorial" by Federico Viticci is fantastic, and that if you have any interest in automation on iOS, this book is the key that will show you how to unlock the power of Editorial, with the author revealing that he has been using Editorial and his iPad to publish MacStories for the past eight months, and adding that he now prefers writing in Editorial on his iPad rather than writing on his Mac. Luoma says when he read that claim near the beginning of the book, he thought Viticci might be guilty of a little casual hyperbole, but that by the end of the book it seemed not only true, but also obvious and self-evident.

Cable Loses Another 1.8 Million Subs

Fairer Platform reports that Business Insider, quoting SNL Kagan data for Q2 2013, reports 1.8 million cable subscribers walked away. And, although the telcos, like AT&T and Verizon, picked up some 400,000 of those people, traditional pay TV providers saw a net loss of 366,000 subs, and notes that cord cutters are multiplying with nearly 1 million dropping cable and satellite over the last year.

HOT Watch Is The Smartwatch Samsung Should've Built

Quartz's Christopher Mims says that while the design of Samsung's new smart watch suggests that the company has yet to answer the fundamental question of what a smart watch is fo, Dallas, Texas-based PHTL seems to have answered that question with its forthcoming HOT Watch, which makes the wearer's body part of the sound system.

HOT Watch:Complete Smart Watch w/Revolutionary Private Calls

Texas-based startup PHTL says smartphones are essential these days, but are expensive and getting more bulky, noting that every time you take one out is a hassle, while presenting a risk for breakage, loss or theft, and holding the phone near your head during a call is also suspected to cause radiation-related health risks.
