AnandTech Posts iPhone 5 Performance Preview

AnandTech's Anand Lal Shimpi has posted hands-on observations and impressions of the iPhone 5, having gone straight to work performance testing, with particular focus on Apple's new A6 SoC that uses of a pair of Apple's own in-house designed CPU cores that implement the ARMv7 ISA rather than plain-vanilla Cortex A9s or Cortex A15s. Combined with a PowerVR SGX543MP3 GPU running at higher clock speeds than the dual-core 543MP2 in the preceding A5 SoC, Lal Shimpi reports computing performance similar to the A5x SoC used in Apple's 3rd generation iPad, but with a smaller overall die area and a narrower memory interface.

The Disconcerting Brilliance of iPhone 5

Slate's Will Oremus says the iPhone 5 may be the greatest smartphone on the market... a "graceful, intuitive, thoroughly impressive gizmo that may change your life." However he advises prospective iPhone 5 purchasers to be aware in advance that it won't necessarily be a change for the better.

Oremus notes that there are Android phones that equal or surpass the iPhone 5 on paper, some boasting larger screens or better battery life and comparable features, but says the iPhone 5 wins on fit and finish, and on details that you cant intuit from a spec sheet, and that with the possible exception of Apple's new iOS 6 Maps app, is "free of the bizarre and boneheaded design flaws that mar many of its competitors... closer to perfection than any smartphone has ever been"

However, Oremus allows that it's both exhilarating and a little alarming for an iPhone 3G user like him to upgrade to a phone thats also optimized for so many other things; "exhilarating because it feels like youre carrying the whole world in your pocket at all times.... disconcerting because sometimes that feels like rather a lot to be carrying around."

Apple Scrambled To Hire iOS 6 Maps Engineers Days Before Launch

The Register's Anna Leach reports that Apple posted job ads for six iOS map engineers within the past ten days, perhaps hafing belatedly realized that its maps application wasn't very good, and that it needed new staff to improve it. However, she suggests that an effort to boost the software's team at that late date could be seen as too little, too late.

Use Street View in iOS 6 For Free

With the release of iOS 6, Apple makes a big change to the Maps app. Although it has the cool 3D-view and navigation features, we lost the Street View functions. Fortunately, Google still operates the Maps API so that developers can continue to make apps from it, which also comes with Street View functionalities. This article introduces an app "WhatsGoLa", comes with a paid and a free version, that continues to give you the Street View functions.

WhatsGoLa is a photography app which lets you virtually travel the world by superimposing photos. The tool "WhatsGoLa Camera" shows a map on the screen to let you find scenery images from a given location. If Street View is available in this area, you may also open the street view - powered by Google Maps API.

If you like the street view, just tap the shutter button. Then you can choose to save the photo to the iDevice or continue to superimpose. Browsing Panoramio scenery photos is also one of the features to visit the world. All above can be done by the free (and NO AD) version. As this article only focuses on the Street View usage, we won't mention too many other functions in this app. If you are interested, you may visit the official website for more details.

The paid version includes a database with more than 1000 famous points of interests, including the Google Street View Collections. The Street View page is also integrated with Gyroscope, which simulate taking photos on the streets.

In a few weeks, the next version 1.3, will be released including these functions:
(*) Bookmark the locations
(*) Share the location by email
(*) Show website for the POI if available

Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, 3/4/5G iPod touch and iPad
(*) Requires iOS 5.0 or later
(*) 8.5 MB

WhatsGoLa 1.2 is $2.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Photo & Video category. A standalone app "WGL Camera" will also be released soon.

iPhone 5 Available: How To Securely Erase Your Device Before Selling

ProtectStar Inc. announces iShredder Pro 2.0.3, an update to their popular secure erase utility for iOS. Like an industrial grade paper shredder, the app offers military-grade security and will overwrite the free storage space of the device, according to the guidelines of the government services. For Business and government users, there is also a state-of-the-art deletion report as a PDF file available as an In-App-Purchase or decide for iShredder 2 Enterprise edition.

The iPhone 5 hit the stores Friday, and a great number of Apple fans will immediately purchase the current all-round hardware. But what to do with the old iPhone model? It is often given away or sold.

The problem: even though the devices are small, they often contain a staggering amount of personal data. Photos, videos, appointments, addresses, e-mails with sensitive content, internet links as well as private records from app store downloads.

Before you sell your iPhone you'll need to make sure that all your personal files on it have been blitzed beyond recovery, without a trace. It's simple to restore supposedly deleted files from the memory on your device. iShredder is like an Industrial Grade paper shredder, which goes beyond international security standards. The iOS app is easy to use and includes free technical support. iShredder surpasses international standards used by state and military organizations, in secure file deletion, with a wide selection of tried-and-trusted state-of-the-art wiping algorithms. The new iShredder app is also ready for the iPhone 5 with a display resolution of 1136x640 pixels.

It takes just five simple steps to overwrite the free space to make your iPhone ready to give it away:
(*) First, backup your old iPhone so that you have the latest backup ready for iPhone 5
(*) Second, Go to Settings -> General -> choose "Erase All Content and Settings"
(*) Third, configure the AppStore and download ProtectStar iShredder Pro app
(*) Fourth, select a secure wipe method and start the deletion process
( Fifth, do again the 2nd step.

Each algorithm has been analyzed by authorities and independent organizations to make sure it really does what it claims. Data destruction that cannot be recovered. With identity theft on the rise, have peace of mind knowing none of your private data will fall into the wrong hands.

Depending on the edition, the iShredder package comes with deletion algorithms such as DoD 5220.22-M E, US Air Force (AFSSI-5020), US Army AR380-19, DoD 5220.22-M ECE, BSI/VS-ITR TL-03423 Standard, German BSI-VS-2011, NATO Standard, Gutmann, HMG InfoSec No.5, DoD 5220.22 SSD, US Air Force, US Navy NAVSO and more.

For Business and government users, there is also a state-of-the-Art deletion report as a pdf file available as an In-App-Purchase or decide for iShredder 2 Enterprise edition which comes with all necessary features for enterprise customers.

Language Support:
(*) English, German, Portuguese and Spanish

Device Requirements:
(*) iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

ProtectStar iShredder Pro 2.0.3 is $3.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) for a limited time and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category. After September 24, 2012, the app will be $4.99.
