iFixIt iPhone 5s Teardown

iFixIt teardown specialists extraordinaire iFixIt comment:

Thanks to a little time zone hacking, we managed to get our iPhone 5s before the official release day in the States (a big thank you to everyone on the eastern side of Australia for being bold enough to live your lives almost a whole day into the future).

We loved the iPhone 5 when it came out a year ago. And we were curious: was our 5s just an iPhone 5 in a shiny gold package? Almost, but not quite. There are a lot of design similarities between this iteration and the last, but we noticed a big, sticky difference when we went to remove the battery: repair-unfriendly glue. Unlike the iPhone 5, it took heat and spudgering to pry up the battery this time - an automatic demerit to repairability, knocking the 5s's score to 6 out of 10 on our repairability scale.

image

The teardown:
• The A7 has 1 GB RAM, two cores, and is based on the ARM v8 64-bit instruction set
• Qualcomm MDM9615M LTE Modem & WTR1605L transceiver
• The 1.5 pixel pitch iSight camera is a new, until-now-unseen 12MP sensor from Sony
• A Murata Wi-Fi module most likely houses a Broadcom BCM4334; Apple opted not to upgrade the iPhone to 802.11ac
• Hynix H2JTDG8UD3MBR NAND Flash
• Broadcom BCM5976 touchscreen controller
• Additional components from Skyworks, Triquint, Texas Instruments, and Avago

What we don't yet know:
• Who manufactured the A7. We need to decap the chip for that, which will take a bit more time.
• Who made the MEMS sensors that feed into the M7.
• What, or where, the fabled M7 is.

iFixit iPhone 5c Teardown

iFixIt says the tornado of new Apple devices has taken them over the rainbow, and they've landed in the world of technicolor. At iFixit, they like to answer the hard questions in life, such as "Why is [Apple's latest smartphone] called the c? Why can't Apple name devices in a way that makes sense? What will the insides be like?

image

Teardown snippets:

Technical Specs include:
• Apple A6 system on a chip (SoC)
• 4-inch Retina display with 326 ppi
• 8 megapixel iSight camera
• 4G LTE connectivity
• 16 or 32 GB Storage

Every port, button, and slider has had its metal swapped out for plastic, and not only are these parts made of plastic, they also look a lot more"childish."

Removing the battery requires the assistance of iFixIt's iOpener, a departure from the easy battery replacements of yester-year.

The battery has been beefed up a bit, clocking in at 3.8 V5.73 Wh1510 mAh, compared to the 3.8 V5.45 Wh1440 mAh battery of the iPhone 5.

Will it bend? Based on the muscle test, this lacquered plastic is as strong and blue as Captain Planet, and it's good to know that, though the rear panel is made with plastic to presumably cut costs, Apple did not compromise build quality in the process.

iPhone 5c Repairability: 6 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)
Just like in the iPhone 5, the display assembly is the first component out of the phone, simplifying screen replacements, and the battery is still fairly easy to access, even though it's not technically "user replaceable," although the battery has lost the 5's convenient pull tab, and gained more resilient adhesiveit now requires heat and prying to remove.

Apple's A7 is Made By Samsung

iFixIt says:

There was mighty speculation among the internet as to the manufacturer of Apples new A7 processor. We uncovered it last night during the iPhone 5s teardown, but now Chipworks has taken it one step further. Through the magic of decapping an IC, their internal shots revealed the A7 to be made by Samsung....

image

The M7 Processor an NXP Design Win

Further digging by Chipworks gave us the identity of Apples mysterious M7 processor, a chip that was conspicuously absent from last nights iPhone 5s teardown. Its an NXP LPC18A1 device that was buried beneath a neoprene-looking cover.

iPhone 5c Not What Apple Fans Lined Up For

CNNMoney's Julianne Pepitone notes that Apple's new flagship iPhone 5s got most of the love from the Apple early adopters on Friday, with all of the people interviewed in line outside Apple's New York store waiting for the glass-and-aluminum 5s and none for the colorful plastic enclosure 5c.

Tim Cook May Regret Dismissing Low-cost Smartphones As Junk

BGR's Brad Reed says the most striking takeaway from last Thursday's big Bloomberg Businessweek interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook was the expression of his view that smartphones priced in the $300 to $450 range are junk that Apple wants nothing to do with. Reed maintains that Cook should be more sensitive to the fact that people in emerging markets who are buying cheap smartpohones aren't simply destitute peasants who will never be able to afford Apple products, but rather part of a rising class of consumers in in countries such as China, India and Brazil whose economies are growing very quickly and whose populations totalling nearly 3 billion people are consequently potential future Apple customers.

Instead, he notes, Apple released the iPhone 5c at $550 off contract and arrogantly declared that "we're not in the junk business."

iPhone 5S and 5C Musings And Impressions

The Register's Simon Sharwood says the iPhone 5c is strikingly colourful, and indeed might be too bright to match the kids' furniture he bought at IKEA; so bright that they invoke the impression of being "toys for the under-five crowd, a slightly unsettling association for something that is expensive and fragile," although he hastens to add that the 5c does not feel plasticy or cheap, and is built much better built than a toy, hefting well and conveying pleasing weight and density.

iPhone 5s vs 5c In Drop Test: Is Apple's Plastic Better?

Android Authority's Bogdan Petrovan says his site has a penchant for sending brand new phones to their demise, having done so with Android flagships like the Galaxy Note 2, the Nexus 7, or the HTC One, and to Apple devices like the iPhone and the iPad Mini. We admit that sometimes we went overboard with the testing,

He notes that one conclusion they've drawn from their drop tests over the time is that metal, unsurprisingly, trumps plastic, and as much as they hated to admit it a year ago, the iPhone 5, with its aluminum unibody, proved superior to the plastic Galaxy S3, which ended up with a broken screen and a popped battery.

So what about the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c with their metal and plastic enclosures respectively?

After dropping the two iPhones from chest level, on their backs, on their sides, and the dreaded frontal impact, they conclude that Apples tooling and manufacturing processes for their high-end iPhone 5s continue to impress, providing further evidence to support the conclusion that metal is more durable and therefore superior belief, and that with the iPhone 5c, youve got a phone that simply will not hold up in the same way as its higher end sibling.

Apple Suppliers Requested to Boost Gold iPhone Production

WSJ's Juro Osawa and Lorraine Luk report that Apple Inc. has asked its ODM suppliers to increase production of the gold-colored iPhone 5s by an additional one-third after observing strong demand for the gold model especially, but it isn't clear whether the gold iPhone 5s shortfall reflects current supply constraints manufacturing the new iPhone.

Why The Gold iPhone 5s Will Be The Best-Selling iPhone Model Ever

SlashGear's DOn Reisinger says Apple's decision to build a gold-colored iPhone 5s is about more than just offering another color to consumers, contending that there's more to the gold iPhone than meets the eye at first blush, and predicting that it'll be the bestselling iPhone yet.

First 'Ethical Smartphone' Unveiled in Europe

AFP Relaxnews reports that a Dutch company has introduced the Fairphone, an "ethical" smartphone that promises similar performance to other popular smartphones, while respecting certain values related to the environment, fair trade and transparency in the production chain and components, and avoiding sourcing materials from conflict zones or using factories with poor labour practices, taking as its model the coffee and banana "fair-trade" industry.

BlackBerry Shares Tumble On Report Of Massive Layoffs And Slow Sales

CTVNews.ca Staff report that BlackBerry's shares fell 16 per cent Friday after the company announced it is cutting 4,500 jobs and expects to post a second-quarter loss of at least US$950 million. They note that the latest news is another blow to a Canadian company that created one of the leading communication devices of the past decade, but has been all but pushed out of the market by Apple's iPhone and Google's Android devices, and is now struggling to to sell enough phones to stay out of the red ink, and not succceeding.

CTV reports that BlackBerry expects to report sales of just 3.7 million phones over the second quarter next Friday, according to a market report by Gartner, a metric eclipsed by Samsungs 71.3 million smartphone sales and Apple's 31.9 million sales over the same period, and amounting to about 3 per cent of the smartphone market.
