Apple Market Share: Facts and Psychology

In this week's Monday Note, former Apple Executive and erstwhile BeOS Innovator Jean-Louis Gassée says "Remember netbooks? When Apple was too greedy and stupid to make a truly low-cost Macintosh? Here we go again, Apple refuses to make a genuinely affordable iPhone. There will be consequences - similar to what happened when the Mac refused to join netbooks circling the drain."

Mr. Gassée is withholding judgment on the new iPhone until he has a chance to play customer, buy the product, and use it for about two weeks, but addresses the conventional hand-wringing over the 5C’s $549 allegedly exhorbitant pricetag. He notes that Microsoft kept most of the money with the de facto monopoly enjoyed by its Windows + Office combo, while it let PC hardware manufacturers race to the bottom (think netbooks), leaving HP, which is still the largest PC maker, with a measly 3% operating profit for its Personal Systems Group in the last quarter By contrast, Apple’s share of the PC market may only be 10% or less, but the Mac owns 90% of the $1000+ segment in the US and enjoys a 25% to 35% margin, so Mr. Gassée says why not look at iDevices in the same light and see a small but profitable market share in its future?

Gassée laments that none of this reality check will dispel anticipation of the Cupertino company’s death, and suggests that we could simply dismiss the Apple doomsayers as the industry’s nattering nabobs of negativism, or take a closer look at what insists under the surface, ergo: what are the emotions that cause people to reason against established facts, to feel that the small market share that allowed the Mac to prosper at the higher end will inevitably spell failure for iDevices?
While in the meantime, we can expect to see more hoses attached to Apple’s money pump.

The iPhone Supply Pipeline's Secret Flights

Bloomberg's Adam Satariano has posted a thoroughgoing article describing the complex operational process whereby Apple distributes millions of iPhones from factories in China store shelves worldwide that was set up by
Tim Cook, who oversaw Apple's supply chain before being tapped as Steve Jobs's successor in 2011.

He notes that a single FedEx Boeing 777 freighter can carry some 450,000 iPhones from China to FexEx's Memphis distribution hub --- the charter flight costing about $242,000 to charter, half of which represents fuel cost --- a major step up from the elderly Russion transport aircraft Apple used to use, and that the key to profitability in this means of transport as opposed to sea cargo is the iPhone's high price and light weight.

Samsung Eager To Snatch 14nm A9 Chip Orders From Apple - Digitimes Research

Digitimes Research's Betty Shyu reports that Samsung has turned its R&D focus to 14nm FinFET process development, and is looking to snatch A9 chip orders from Apple, noting that Samsung is still making other processors for Apple including the new A7 chip, and that Apple remains Samsung's biggest foundry customer. Consequently, she notes, losing the opportunity of supplying A8 chips to Apple may result in some idle capacity that Samsung would have to fill starting in mid-2014.

Ms. Shyu observes that Samsung currently has four plants manufacturing non-memory ICs with a combined monthly capacity of about 110,000 12-inch wafers, including its plant at Austin, Texas that produces 40,000 wafers a month.

Samsung May Have Lost Apple's A7 Contract To TSMC

Appleinsider's Daniel Eran Dilger reports that Apple has long been expected to move its A-series chip production from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and that while that wasn't expected to happen before next year, mounting evidence suggests TSMC may already be building the unprecedented 64-bit A7 inside the iPhone 5s.
