Apple's Operating Systems Dominate Mobile Advertising On Strength Of iPad - Opera Mediaworks

Opera Mediaworks, the world's largest mobile ad platform, on Friday released its Q3 State of Mobile Advertising report, sharing insights based on data from its platform, which serves 60 billion ad impressions per month and reaches 400 million consumers.

This quarter's special focus is around the Sports category and how segmentation within the category produces the kind of granularity from which advertisers can benefit. As with past reports, this edition also includes data on mobile ad traffic and monetization by device, geography and publisher category.

Highlights from the report:

• No summer slump for mobile advertising. Typically the company sees a slight dip in mobile ad impressions on its platform during the summer months, but, this year, there was still an upward swing, attributed to growth from international markets.

• iOS captured 44% of impressions and 50% of revenue. Apple's operating system dominates, but the lead is mainly due to the success of the iPad. Removing tablets, iPhone (31%) and Android (30.3%) are closely tied for volume of impressions.

• Tablet market share has doubled in one year. Together, the iPad and Android tablets make up nearly 10% of all impressions served. One year ago (Q3 2012), tablets accounted for just 5% of total impressions.

• Music, Video and Media recaptures lead in monetization. Taking back its no. 1 ranking that it had lost to Sports, this quarter, $0.20 of every dollar made on the platform is in this category. It also led in impression volume, with 23% of the total.

• Baseball, hockey and football fans have different mobile patterns. Fans consuming content specific to these three sports demonstrate variations in device preference and weekly usage patterns. There are also marked differences in the types of advertisers who seek the attention and engagement of these three groups. For example, baseball fans prefer iPhones and view ads for cars, insurance, gadgets and personal finance products.

Game schedules, seasons impact mobile traffic and engagement. Sports traffic peaks on weekends, but engagement is higher towards the end of the work week. Traffic to sport-specific content can drop in excess of 90% when a sport goes into its "off" season.

"This quarter saw many new trends as growth jumped and monetization on mobile categories broadened, among other things," says Mahi de Silva, CEO, Opera Mediaworks. "As we head into the busiest time of the year for advertisers in Q4, we will see exciting new formats that incorporate video and voice technologies slated to run in the last quarter of the year."

Is The iPhone 5c Apple's Surface RT Tablet Moment?

Appleinsider's Daniel Eran Dilger has posted a long think piece on the iPhone 5c's lackluster market reception, analyzing media commentary comparing it to the failure of Microsoft Surface RT tablet PC to attract much of a following.

Dilger notes that like the iPhone 5c, Microsoft's Surface is a technology product that features bright colors, but unlike the Surface, Apple's iPhone 5c leverages a proven platform and app ecosystem, essentially being a repackaging of what has been the world's top selling smartphone, outfitted with a better battery, support for more LTE bands and a $100 price cut, and comes from a company with a remarkable chain of successes in designing, marketing, selling and supporting mobile products, while the Surface was an entirely new tablet based on a platform that had never managed to sell tablets before, equipped with battery performance inferior to the market leader and offering no discount on pricing.

Ciao For iPhone 5c?

DisplaySearch bloggers Tina Teng and Shawn Lee note that the diverging fates of Apple's iPhone 5s and 5c have been widely reported, and their latest channel checks confirm that Apple has cut back 5c production by 35% and increased 5s production by 75%.

Teng and Lee attribute the disappointing performance of the 5c can be attributed to two factors: pricing (especially for the Chinese market), and that market expectation of what the iPhone 5c would be was very different from how Apple wants to position itself, never having the intention to develop a product targeting the low-cost smartphone segment, despite rumors about iPhone 5c being cheap circulating as early as Q3 2012, so the reality that the iPhone 5c is nearly identical to the iPhone 5 and is not cheap disappointed some consumers (not to mention a lot of pundits Ed.).

Apple's iPad Problem

CNNMoney's Julianne Pepitone says that iPad sales are slumping and Apple's share of the tablet market is in a tailspin, so the company is hoping to reverse the trend at its special event on Tuesday, whiere it is expected to reveal its first revamped iPad in a year

Ms. Pepitone notes that during Apple's fiscal third quarter ending in June, iPad sales fell to $6.3 billion -- a 27% drop over last year in a market where tablet sector revenue jumped 40% and 22% in the prior two quarters, and that Apple's global tablet market share currently stands at 32%, down from 60% a year ago, according to IDC.

Nine Ways Apple Can Make the iPad Exciting Again

PC Mag's Sascha Sagan says he's bored with the iPad, even though it's the standard for all tablet computing, and outside China, its sales eclipse all other tablets, its array of third-party apps is unmatched, and it's PC Mag's Editors' Choice for large tablets.

Segan notes that there are ideas from Android and Windows tablets he'd love to see Apple steal and perfect. These include:

• A $269 Retina iPad mini
• Two-window multitasking, Segan noting that as he's been using more Android and Windows tablets, he's grown used to the comfort of splitting a 10-inch screen between a Web browser and another, observing that the iPad could take a leap forward in productivity by letting you do two things at once, Indeed he says that with that feature he would abandon his Macbook for an iPad. (Your editor concurs Ed.)
• A great wraparound keyboard case.
• Kinect-like gestures
• Ports and expandable memory
• A radical new battery technology.
• Much better iCloud synchronization support.
• Broad Touch ID support.
• No rear camera. Apple needs to step up and stop people from looking like idiots. (on this one your editor disagrees vigorously - my iPad's rear camera is one of my favorite device features, and I'm secure enough that I don't give a hoot whether somebody thinks that using it makes me look like a dork or not. Ed.)

iOS 7 Now on 73% of Devices, But Adoption Rates 'Much Slower' Than iOS 6
