How the iPad mini Could Impact Future PC Sales

Tech.pinions' Tim Bajarin says that having personally used the iPad mini for some time now, he's have begun to see his usage patterns with tablets change significantly. Before the iPad mini, the tablet he used most was the original iPad.

Bajarin proposes an 80/20 rule with tablets whereby most consumers can do about 80% of the stuff they do with a PC on a tablet, with the 20 percent they can't assigned to a laptop. However, he observes that once he started using the iPad mini, he found himself-defaulting to the 9.7-inch iPad with an external keyboard as his main productivity device, with a 90/10 rule kicking in. To wit, he now spends about 90% of his computer time on the tablets and only about 10% on his laptop.

His informal surveys indicate that many other users have adopted a similar dynamic, and are postponing PC upgrades or buying bottom-end PCs, no longer able to justifiy paying premium prices for devices that now get so little use, which bodes ill for a recovery in the PC market, with an impact on the traditional PC market that could be dramatic within two-three years - what some industry insiders are calling "the PC Cliff."

However, Bajarin also notes that interest in tablet/PC hybrids like Microsoft's new Surface tablet computer is extremely high, and likely to break out when the Surface Pro running full desktop Windows 8 on x86 silicon becomes available.

Bajarin believes that the iPad mini and smaller tablets will be even more disruptive to the traditional PC market than the iPad has been to date.

Why Surface RT?: Multiple Users

WinSuperSite's Paul Thurrott observes that while the iPad has certain ecosystem advantages over the recently-released Surface with Windows RT, Microsoft's entry also edges out Apple's device in some key areas, one of them being its support for multiple users whereas the iPad is linked to just one iTunes account.

Blackberry Bad For Allergy Sufferers?

TG Daily's Emma Woollacott reports that Blackberry phones may be worse for allergy sufferers than an iPhone or Android phone, noting that scientists at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) examined popular smartphones for their use of two common allergens, cobalt and nickel, which can cause allergic reactions in some 17 percent of women and three percent of men including dry, itchy patches along the cheek bones, jaw line and ears, redness, swelling, itching, eczema, blistering, skin lesions - and even occasional scarring, finding that pproximately one-third of all Blackberrys contain nickel, but neither cobalt nor nickel was detected in iPhones or Android phones.
