How Will Japan Earthquake Affect Apple's iPad Supply Chain?
ZNet's David Morgenstern says:
Apple releases the iPad 2 on Friday and on the very same day a 9.0 earthquake rocks Japan, one of the centers of NAND flash production. What might the fallout from the quake be to Apple's product availability and rollouts as well as to prices?
Author's Note: A number of readers have complained that this article is insensitive to the pain and suffering of the Japanese people. If that is so, please accept my sincere apology. I have friends and former colleagues in Japan and I offered them my prayers for their safety and recovery last night. I have been to Japan and have a respect for its traditions and people. The devastation from the quake is terrible.
At the same time, my editorial mission here is to look at Apple, its products and markets. If that appears callous, I ask your forbearance. Some of the comments in the story were made several months ago, so please keep that context in mind.
You can check it out at:
http://zd.net/hQSqO0
Editor's Note: I'm inclined to go with David Morgenstern's school of thought on this matter. I think most of us are stunned by the scope and magnitude of the disaster(s) in Japan, which will continue in its consequential manifestations for weeks and months to come years and decades if one or more of those damaged nuclear reactors melt(s) down. It's hideous and horrible - surreal. You have to keep reminding yourself that the images of destruction are not CGI generated in a studio for a Hollywood disaster movie, but that those houses, cars, and boats beng destroyed wholesale before your eyes, and with many of them occupied by real people in the process of losing their very real lives. It beggars our capacity of comprehension. Thousands - probably tens of thousands of lives lost, and millions thrust into survival mode.
One of my daughters lived and worked in Japan for two years, and while she is back in North America, she still has many friends there.
However, other life must go on, including the world of commerce and. The Tokyo stock market is open this morning ( and down about 500 points the last I looked). How this catastrophe will affect Apple and the IT hardware industries in general is a fair and appropriate news topic. I'm confident that David intended no disrespect
Ed.
Best Buy, Target, Walmart Will Also Sell IPad 2
CIO's Matt Hamblen says:
If you're planning to buy the iPad 2... you might want to consider retailers such as Best Buy, Walmart and Target instead of the Apple retail stores or the two major U.S. carriers.

iMovie Works On Original iPad, Here's How To Install It
9To5Mac's Mark Gurman says:
Even though the original iPad is able to run the latest version of iMovie for iOS, Apple has decided to not allow original iPad users to install iMovie directly through the App Store. This decision has to do with the original iPads lack of cameras, slower processor, and less RAM.
Original iPad users who want to run iMovie on their original iPad shouldn't fear, as iMovie can work on their iPads without a jailbreak.

"Underwhelming" iPad 2 Has a Silver Lining
Low End Mac's John Hatchett says:
Underwhelming is the name of the iPad 2, but there is a sliver lining.
....even with a 20" iMac with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I could not view Steverino at Apple's site. Seems I needed to have OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
I don't expect to watch a presentation of either one of my PowerPC laptops. I don't. They don't have the processor speed or the video card - but why can't run it on my big work iMac?
'Cause you ain't got no Snow Leopard.
Not to worry though. I could use my tiny iPod touch, which kept crashing on me. Perhaps that broke the Apple spell.
The iPad 2 comes in black or white.
Yes, I know that the iPad 2 has a new processor and two video cameras, and that it's been slimed down and now comes in two colors! But it still lacks an SD Card slot and a USB slot and alternative methods of moving data to and from the iPad.

First Impressions From An iPad 2 Owner: Should You Wait?
Mashable's Lauren Indvik says:
After months of rumors, nine days of greedy anticipation, and two-and-a-half hours in line (something I havent done since the Indiana Jones ride came out at Disneyland), I have an iPad 2 in my hands....
...will the iPad 2 maintain Apple's lead ahead of newer competitors, bringing in enough first-time holdouts over the likes of the HP Touchpad, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab? Will iPad 1 owners find it worth the upgrade? Lets take a look.

Which iPad 2 To Buy? Get the 16GB WiFi-Only In Black. Heres Why
Cult of Mac's Buster Heine says:
Weve been getting a lot of questions from readers and friends over which iPad 2 you should buy. Should you go with WiFi only, or the 3G version for when youre not around a hotspot? How much storage do you need? And most importantly, how do you choose between black or white?
The answer is that you should get the 16GB WiFi-only model in black. Heres why....
You can find out at:
http://bit.ly/gEAr1e
Editor's Note: I agree with most of Buster's reasoning here. Unless you really need the greater storage capacity and/or plan to use your iPad a lot on the road, go with the base model Wi-Fi version. I'm personally partial to white devices. Buster makes well-argued case for black, but AnandTech counters that rather than being overwhelming or busy, the white bezel actually has one notable advantage over black - it doesn't show fingerprints or dust, a constant aggravation with the previous, black-only generation - it always looked dirty, and in this context, white seems to actually make sense. The main takeaway here is that in 11 months or so you'll be wantiing to replace your iPad 2 with an iPad 3. Ed.
AnandTech Apple iPad 2 Preview
AnandTech's Anand Lal Shimpi, Brian Klug & Vivek Gowri have already posted a preview commentary on the iPad 2. I expect we'll eventually also see one of their ten-ton tech reviews of the iPad 2 (that comment isn't meant to be disparaging - I love reading AnandTech's technically detailed reviews - but be prepared to spend some time on them, even on this five-ton preview).
The previewers note that iPad 2 is a very logical update to the original iPad, with revised industrial design, a slimmer chassis, and Apple's new A5 SoC inside. A5 brings along two Cortex A9 cores, a dual core version of PowerVR's SGX543 graphics chip, and 512MB of memory, slightly lighter but easier to hold than the previous generation, and that laying in bed and reading is probably where the difference becomes most apparent.
They note that overall, the new design really works - the iPad 2 feels good in hand, and instantly makes its predecessor feel a little clunky, but there's a lot under the hood of the iPad 2 that demands attention.

eBay Instant Sale First Generation iPad Offers Climb 800% - Consumers guaranteed offers of up to $450 for used iPads through March 25
eBay has announced that its easy-to-use electronics trade-in platform, eBay Instant Sale, has made more than 22,000 offers on first generation iPads since Apples announcement of iPad 2 last Wednesday. This represents a 796% increase compared with the previous week.
Since eBay launched Instant Sale in October 2010, roughly 38,000 iPad offers have been made in total compared to only 1,600 offers made for other tablets.
eBay Instant Sale is a new program that lets people get competitive cash offers for electronics, including tablets and cell phones, in 60 seconds or less. eBay customers who visit eBay.com/iPad and enter in basic information about their device will receive an instant cash offer. Once the offer is accepted, users will receive a free shipping label. Payment will be deposited into the customers PayPal account once the item has been received and evaluated.
With the launch of Instant Sale, eBay now offers its customers two compelling options for offloading electronics: traditional selling and trade-in. Users can opt for the solution that makes the most sense to them based on the time they have available and the effort they are willing to commit.
In addition to Instant Sales value proposition for consumers, the platform provides an engine for the reuse of functional electronics, keeping e-waste out of landfills and preventing new manufacturing. Further, if an old device has no value, eBay Instant Sale will responsibly recycle it free of charge.

WritePad is an advanced notetaker for iPads and iPhones, which converts practically any handwriting into computer text. This feature-rich, Star-Trek-like technology makes the on-screen soft keyboard obsolete.
PhatWare announces the newest iPhone version of WritePad, the popular note taking and handwriting recognition software for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Like the iPad version released last week, WritePad now features a redesigned Document Manager, which allows users to store their documents in the apps folder hierarchy and search all documents for specific characters or words.
Beyond the new Document Manager, WritePad now allows users to specify the remote access password for the Document Sharing feature. The password is also required to upload WritePad documents on the users device.
The ability to organize WritePad files in folders and support for global search are among the most requested features by our customers, said Stan Miasnikov, president of PhatWare Corp. We are pleased to offer these and other improvements in this version and will continue working to implement other features requested by WritePad users.
