Is iOS The Future Of The Mac?
AppStorm's Anna Victoria says when she used an iPad for the first time, she couldnt help but think that it felt like the future of computing. The iPad not only impressed Ms. Victoria with its beautiful interface, but also delighted her with an effortless user experience. No matter how much she used the device, she says it never became cluttered or disorganized like her Mac. Apps launched quickly and she never had to spend time fiddling with window sizes or knowing what apps were running. Everything simply worked.
Ms. Victoria allows that with iOS revolutionizing many computing paradigms, OS X is beginning to feel outdated, and suggests that if Apple is to truly make the Mac the personal computer of the future, they will need to implement some bold changes that may eliminate some of the staples of desktop computing that most of us can't imagine living without.
She provides a lengthy and thorough argument for her take on why our computing world is headed this way.

Death To The Desktop: Long Live The Tablet
Tim Pirog of The Stute, the Stevens Institute of Technology student newspaper, says he loves his desktop computer, but he's not able to carry it around and use it everywhere he goes, which is why he contends that tablets, not laptops, are becoming very valuable tools.
Pirog observes that the smartphone is replacing most functions we used to need a computer or laptop for such as checking email and doing things on the Internet, and maintains that the obvious next step is for tablets to step in and become for smartphones what the desktop is to the laptop.
What about Ultrabooks such as the Macbook Air? "They're nice to have but are essentially tablets with a keyboard," he argues, and while some people like them, most people want an iPhone or a Galaxy Nexus - something with a big beautiful touchscreen to do everything on.
Pirog notes that forthcoming Windows 8 is designed from the ground up to be very mobile/tablet friendly, and that with their new Metro UI, Windows tablets to be released at the end of 2012 will be extremely user-friendly and able to keep up with, and perhaps surpass, the competition. He predicts 2012 will be the year of the tablet.

Two Years of Apple's iPad - Low End Mac Roundtable
In The Latest Low End Mac Roundtable, LEM staffers weigh in on the significance of the iPad's second anniversary, noting that as much as the iPad has changed the face of portable computing and e-reading, it's hard to believe that it was introduced just two years ago.
Alan Zisman notges that for him, one of the best features of the iPad (though an optional one) has been little commented on - and that's that (at least for the 3G models) Apple was able to get the various mobile providers - in the US, Canada, and other countries - to offer data packages without contracts and with starting prices lower than for most other devices. As a result, while he's mostly able to go online using WiFi - at home and out and about - he has a $15/month data package that ensures that he's connected everywhere else as well.
Austin Leeds says his iPad has been quite possibly the best investment he's ever made, for two years, having been everything from tuba to email machine to photo editing platform to oversized portable gaming console to digital picture frame. Leeds thinks that ultimately, the iPad will indeed become the ultimate low-end "Mac."
Brian Gray notes that last year his wife purchased an iPad 2 for to use instead of her aging 12" PowerBook, and it turns out this is the computing device she was destined to use all along.
Charles Moore says he resisted the iPad for more than a year. He didn't like touchscreens, and still doesn't after seven months of iPad usership, but concedes that the 'Pad has become integrated into his daily routines.
However, he critiques the iOS's lame facility for working with text, which he likens to trying to play the piano while wearing wooly mittens, and says he profoundly misses multitasking, with what's purported to pass for it in iOS newspeak a bad joke. Moore also dislikes full screen application interfaces, and finds the incapacity to have multiple document and/or application windows open simultaneously a horribly constipating workflow bottleneck, doesn't like losing the degree of control one has with a document- and folder-based directory file system interface, and pans Apple's refusal to equip the iPad with a real USB port. Nevertheless, he admits that he would miss the iPad, a lot, if it were gone, although he thinks an 11.6" MacBook Air might be a better compromise than anything else available at the moment.

Steve Jobs And U.S. Jobs
A Holland Sentinel Guest Editorial says the late Steve Jobs, beloved for his products more than his politics, made appearances both in president Barack Obama's's State of the Union address and the Republican response last week, with President Obama citing Jobs as an entrepreneur, which is what America has always been about, while Republican Mitch Daniels used a broader brush, noting that Jobs had created more of jobs than all the stimulus dollars the president borrowed and allegedly blew, the latter contention radically divergent from the truth unless you're talking jobs in China.

Tablet Ownership In Canada Nearly Tripled In 2011: Report
The Canadian Press reports that tablet ownership nearly tripled in Canada last year and will continue to surge in 2012, according to a report by the Media Technology Monitor (http://bit.ly/fOk7TY).
The report notes that among anglophone Canadians, tablet ownership was at about 11 percent last fall, up from four percent in 2010, while francophone tablet ownership was at six percent last fall, compared to two percent in 2010, and that MTM expects the pace of tablet purchasing to slow somewhat in 2012, but still rising from some 10 percent among all Canadians in 2011 to about 17 percent.
The report also found that about 72 percent of all tablets owned by anglophone Canadians last year were iPads.

Strategy Analytics: Apple Becomes World's Largest Smartphone Vendor in Q4 2011
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 54 percent annually to reach a record 155 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple reclaimed top position as the worlds number one smartphone vendor during the quarter.
Alex Spektor, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, says: "Global smartphone shipments grew 54 percent annually to reach a record 155.0 million units in Q4 2011. Apple overtook Samsung to become the worlds largest smartphone vendor by volume with 24 percent market share. Apples global smartphone shipments surged 128 percent annually to 37.0 million units, as distribution of the iPhone family expanded across numerous countries, dozens of operators and multiple price points."
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, adds, "While Apple took the top spot in smartphones on a quarterly basis, Samsung became the market leader in annual terms for the first time with 20 percent global share during 2011. With global smartphone shipments nearing half a billion units in 2011, Samsung is now well positioned alongside Apple in a two-horse race at the forefront of one of the worlds largest and most valuable consumer electronics markets."
Tom Kang, Director at Strategy Analytics, comments, "Nokia's global smartphone market share halved from 33 percent in 2010 to 16 percent in 2011. A lackluster touchscreen smartphone portfolio and a limited presence in the huge United States market caused Nokias shrinkage last year. Nokias partnership with Microsoft will be very much in focus during 2012, and the industry will be watching closely to see how swiftly the two companies can expand in the high-value 4G LTE market that is rapidly emerging across the United States, Japan and elsewhere."

Decline In Apple Share Of Mobile Internet Usage Shows Battle To Dominate Mobile Phones And Tablets Is Far From Over
51Degrees.mobi ( http://51degrees.mobi/ ) has published an analysis of the mobile devices its online partners detected browsing the internet last year.
=The 51Degrees.mobi Mobile Web Trends 2011 white paper shows that the proportion of mobile web visitors in the USA with Android devices overtook Apple users by the end of the year. The share of Apple iOS web traffic in December 2011 fell to 34.1% in the US, while Android increased to 36.6%.
In Europe, Apple remained ahead with 42.6% of mobile web visits despite an increase in Android usage to 25.5% by the end of 2011.
Figures for RIM's BlackBerry OS were stable in the USA and Europe throughout the second half of 2011, varying by just a fraction of a percentage point. Both regions saw BlackBerry usage remain at around 9% of all mobile web traffic.
Unlike the mobile market in Europe and the USA, mobile phone use in India has been dominated by Nokia and its Symbian operating system for several years. Nokia mobile web visits fell in H2 2011 from 57.3% of the total figure to 50.6% by the end of the year.
The data has been collated from customers who use 51Degrees.mobi free and premium device detection services.
"The battle for mobile operating system dominance is far from over," says 51Degrees.mobi CEO James Rosewell. "Apple experienced record sales of iPad2 and iPhone devices, yet its share of mobile web traffic declined in the US and Europe - indicating just how many more Android based products were used online in the same period."
Users of 51Degrees.mobi's services detected over 140 million device visits in December 2011, giving the company a unique insight into mobile internet use. It shares this information with owners of web sites who provide it with mobile device data and with customers whove purchased a Support &Maintenance Agreement. More information is available online at:
http://51Degrees.mobi
The 51Degrees.mobi Mobile Web Trends 2011 white paper is available to download free from:
http://51Degrees.mobi
The paper analyses the overall percentage of mobile phones, tablets and other devices that access mobile-optimised websites around the world. Data has been sourced from websites using 51Degrees.mobi device detection and web optimisation.
Europe, the USA and India were chosen for this research due to the high volume of mobile web visits recorded throughout 2011. In each case, the country or region refers to the location of the web site. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom (the EU5) have been grouped together for the Europe metrics.

Jailbreaking is Not a Crime! Don't Forget to Sign the Petition
idownloadblog's Sebastien says:
A few days ago we told you that the US Copyright Office was due to renew the exemption given to jailbreaking. Should they decide not to renew the exemption, jailbreaking could become this gray legal area again, with no actual text making it legal or illegal.
Although very unlikely, that means jailbreakers could potentially be at risk of being sued by Apple for jailbreaking their device. Again, Apple never sued a jailbreaker and likely never will, but sometimes, its just a matter of principle. We want jailbreaking to be officially legal
There is one quick and easy way you can help make jailbreaking legal. Simply go to this form and include the following information into an attachment to be sent with the form:
Which jailbreaking exemption are you supportingsmartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?
What's your background (are you a developer, hobbyist, user, independent researcher, etc.)?
What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?
What limitations would you face if you werent able to jailbreak?
Don't need to write an essay. Just a few words will show your dedication and support.
All comments should be marked as class 5 and are due by 5 PM ET on February 10.
If you want to help the jailbreak community, this is your time to shine!
