Using The iPad mini As A Phone

Your editor has argued that in the iPad mini, Apple has the makings of a super-phablet, and iMore's Rene Ritchie has confirmed that it's not just a fanciful notion.

In transit with a nearly discharged iPhone that he was going to need at his destination, Ritchie also needed a phone to use while he was at the airport all day, so he reached for his iPad mini, using Skype to make calls using his in-ear headset, which he says worked as well as it's always worked with the iPhone. He observes that he seldom uses his iPhone as a phone anyway, and the things he does do on the iPhone all day, every day while out and about - social networking, iMessaging, gaming - all worked just as well on the iPad mini as they do on the iPhone, and thanks to big pockets on his Canadian winter jacket, the iPad mini was just as easy to carry around when he didn't want it in hand.

And that, he says, makes the whole 5-inch iPhone line of speculation even more interesting....

Win 8 Tablets More Coveted Than iPads By Business Users

NewsFactor's Adam Dickter reports that while Apple's iPad may still be the top tablet in the U.S. and worldwide markets, it doesn't seem to be catching on among business users, with a Forrester Research survey of 9,766 global information workers finding that just 26 percent wanted an iPad, while 12 percent were using one, but a significantly larger proportion - 32 percent - wanted a Windows 8-based tablet, such as Microsoft 's Surface, although only 2 percent actually had one yet. The report notes that the iPad is deemed compromised for business use since it's short on productivity software and security features, making it more of a toy than a tool, and the Windows remains the standard in most companies.

7 Uses for Your Outdated iPad

Gizmodo's AndrewTarantola notes that while most tablets have a shelf life longer than the six months iPad 3 represented the leading edge, grow obsolete depressingly quickly, but old iPads can still have useful lives as high-powered specialist devices.

He profiles seven examples.

It vexes me that any device costing as much as an iPad does can be straight-facedly considered “outdated” at less than three years old, but anyway you can check it out at:

Apple Wakes Up To India's Potential; iPhone Witnesses Four-fold Rise In Sales In 3 Months

The Times of Indoa reports that Apple, which they say has long ignored India, appears to be vying for the attention of the affluent Indian smartphone buyer who has been cultivated assiduously by rival Samsung for many yearsays:

The report says Apple has launched an extensive advertising and marketing campaign for iPhone, a shift away from a strategy that relied on tie-ups with mobile operators, and cites market researcher IDC estimating that over the past three months, sales of Apple devices, especially iPhones, have increased by a factor of 3-4x.

Tablet Shipments Overall To Drop 21.8 Percent In Q1/13; But A 5 Percent Gain For Apple Forecast

Digitimes Research's James Wang reports that worldwide brand tablet shipments are estimated to reach 33.8 million units in the first quarter of 2013, down 21.8% sequentially, but up 75.8% on year.

However, Mr. Wang forecasts that Apple's iPad series shipments will enjoy a close to 5% sequential growth to reach 22 million units in the first quarter, accounting for 65.1% of total tablet sales volume as changes in iPad series' life-cycle (launch schedule) in 2012 will help the iPad devices to suffer less impact from seasonal factors. However, he says seasonality will still significantly impact demand for non-iPad tablets, causing their combined shipments to drop 46.9% sequentially to 11.8 million units with a market share of only 34.9%.

Digitimes Research estimates that Apple will remain the largest tablet brand in the first quarter, following by Samsung Electronics, Google, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Microsoft.

Apple and Samsung Devices Displace Nokia Worldwide For First Time In Terms Of Internet Usage - StatCounter

Digitimes' Alex Wolfgram reportsthat Apple dislodged Nokia in January 2013 for the first time as the most popular mobile vendor in terms of global Internet usage, according to website analytics company StatCounter. Samsung also climbed ahead of Nokia to take second place behind Apple on a worldwide basis.

StatCounter found that in January 2013 Apple led globally for the first time in terms of Internet usage with 25.86%, ahead of Samsung at 22.69% and Nokia at 22.15%.

StatCounter also noted that Apple's worldwide Internet usage share fell from 28.67% in January 2012 to 25.86% in January 2013. Samsung rose from 14.84% to 22.69% over the same period. Nokia fell from 37.67% to 22.15%.

The Mobile Train Has Left The Windows 8 Platform Behind

techpinions.com's John Kirk says that all anyone could talk about in a Canaccord Genuity report on profits realized by the mobile phone sector and a Canalys report on market share in the tabet, notebook and desktop sectors was whether Apple and Samsung could take in more than 100% of a sector's profits or whether the tablet was truly a PC or not.

Kirk contends that these are accounting and verbal semantics that are as meaningless as medieval debates over how many angels can stand on the head of a pin. Lets focus on the implications of these reports and ignore the bickering over irrelevant rhetorical flourishes.

He notes that according to Canaccord Genuity, Apple took in 69% of the handset (not just smartphone) profits in 2012, while Samsung took in 34%, and everyone else was a vestigial player in the very low single digits, with nobody other than Apple or Samsung making meaningful profits from the handset sector.

And while some assert that Andoid is destroying iOS. Kirk says what is actually happening is:

1) With 69% of the profits, profit numbers say just the opposite, and iOS is doing just fine. More than fine, actually.
2) Android destroyed every phone manufacturer not named Apple (BlackBerry, Nokia, Palm, etc.).
3) Samsung destroyed every Android phone manufacturer not named Samsung (HTC, Motorola, Sony Erricson, etc.).

As for Microsoft - after three years of flailing, Windows 7 is dead and Windows 8 phone manufacturers are all in the red.

Apple to Release iPhone 5S and 5-Inch iPhone 6 in 2013? - Rumor

The BrightWire newsfeed cites Sina Tech, the technology-related news section of Sina.com - a major Chinese online media company - reporting a Chinese mobile phone information site Laoyaoba.com source saying he’s seen the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 at Apple's suppliers, with both models to possibly be released in 2013.

iPhone 6 To Get A 5G Wi-Fi Chip?

Macworld Australia staff reports that news of Samsung's Galaxy S4 smarthphone (expected to launch this month) possibly supportting 802.11ac, also known as 5G Wi-Fi, has lead to speculation that Apple's next iPhone could support that standard as well.

Macworld cites Evercore Partners analyst Patrick Wang saying that new connectivity chips from Broadcom (BRCM) are expected to be used in the Samsung's Galaxy S4, and that Apple is also believed to be in talks with Broadcom about new chips for its iPhone 6, as well as the rumoured low-cost iPhone.

CarStory iPad App Uses Big Data to Uncover the Unique Story Behind Every Used Car

Vast has announced CarStory, an iPad application that uses big data and complex analysis to help automotive sales associates partner with their customers throughout the sales process. CarStory uncovers the information to address each customer concern and drive momentum toward a vehicle purchase. The app makes it possible for dealership sales associates to reveal the unique attributes behind each car and build the value for the customer.

The challenge Big Data has seen is in how it can add significant business value. For the automotive industry, CarStory is doing just that.

image

As the seven-year-old big data behemoth in the automotive space, Vast analyzes market signals from roughly 100 million used car searches across hundreds of online automotive sites each month. CarStory's insights have been carefully developed by Vast data scientists, evaluated by industry experts, and battle-tested on the lot by dealers over several years. "We not only know what's out there," explains Vast President Ben Cohen, "we uncover previously unattainable insights about why each car is unique and what makes it right for a buyer. We aren't simply supplying the data were putting it to work for the dealer."

Vast CEO John Price has been moving Vast toward CarStory for years. As a 30-year veteran in the Artificial Intelligence space, Price has seen a similar trend develop over time. Just like Artificial Intelligence before it, Big Data is an incredible technology platform with unlimited potential, remarks Price. The challenge Big Data has seen is in how it can add significant business value. For the automotive industry, CarStory is doing just that.

Lead advisor on the CarStory application is renowned former AutoNation CMO Gary Marcotte. "When I retired from AutoNation, I knew there was more I could do to help dealerships," says Marcotte. "CarStory offers remarkable insight into each car, along with the transparency customers need to feel comfortable moving forward in the process."

Several automotive dealerships have already deployed CarStory with their sales associates. CarStory's positive impact on sales is already obvious at Red McCombs Hyundai in San Antonio, Texas, where the application has been universally adopted. "These days, customers often spend hours researching our cars online before they arrive at one of our dealerships," says Red McCombs Analyst Zack Freed. "With CarStory, our associates can instantly provide further insights, beyond whats available to customers online. CarStory's big data has made us a more valuable resource to our customers in every sale."

More information about Vast's CarStory application can be found on http://carstory.com . The application is also available in the Apple AppStore. Note: CarStory requires Vast and Dealership approval for full functionality.

CarStory allows you to walk your lot with the world leader in automotive big data. We put your inventory back in your hands, so you never have to rush back to your desk, interrupt a sale, or say Ill get back to you on that ever again.
