RIM: BlackBerry 10 Is Fine, Delays Attributed To Chip Ship Slip
The Register's Bill Ray reports that RIM has strenuously denied that hiccups in development are delaying the launch of phones based on its new OS, citing chip deliveries as the problem, citing an explicit statement by RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis refuting a Boy Genius Report blog reporting problems with the upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS, as "inaccurate and uninformed," and reiterating that delays to the launch of smartphones running Blackberry 10 are attributable to RIM's decision to wait for a dual-core processor with integrated LTE (4G), rather than any problems getting the software working.

Don't Hold Your Breath Expecting 7-Inch iPad; Think Cheaper iPad 2 Instead
AllThingsD's John Paczkowski says that while rumors of a 7" iPad in the works are circulating, there's likely very little to them, and certainly not in 2012, at least according to Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair in a Friday investor update, who recalls that Steve Jobs was scornful of the 7-inch form factor, declaring in 2010 that 7-inch tablets headed to market at the time would be dead on arrival, and that the 9.7-inch display Apple chose for the iPad was the minimum size required to create great tablet apps. Blair thinks a more likely scenario would be for Apple to continue selling a discounted iPad 2 at $349 to $399 alongside the new iPad 3 which is expected to launch in Q1 2012.

iPad3 To Be Launched On Steve Jobs' Birthday?
Focus Taiwan notes that speculation has been rife over when Apple Inc. will launch the next generation iPad3, with the Chinese-language Economic Daily News newspaper reporting Friday that iPad 3 might be launched on Feb. 24 to mark the anniversary of the birth of Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs, commenting "After the iPhone 4S successfully took the tech market by storm, the iPad3 is widely expected to be Apple's first hit product to be released next year," and that to meet the iPad 3 delivery date, main assembler Hon Hai Precision Industry's iPad division will only allow its employees to take five days off during the Lunar New Year holiday, while staff at the company's other divisions will have a longer holiday, and with casing producer Catcher Technology also saying that at least some of its employees will have to work overtime during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Samsung Says No Room For TouchWiz and Android 4 On Galaxy S, Tab
CDRInfo reports that the original Samsung Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S will not be updated to Android 4 "Ice Cream" OS because Samsung's TouchWiz interface takes up too much space, the company announced Friday, and notes that Samsung announced Wednesday that several of its recently released products will be upgraded to Android 4 by March 2012, including the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note.

Samsung Tries to Justify Why the Galaxy Nexus S Will Not Support Android 4
HardMac's Lionel comments that:
Following the rather violent reactions driven by its recent announcement that its Nexus S mobile phone will not support Android 4, Samsung is working hard to try to justify such decision, but it seems the company is trying to define what its customers should do... it might also be a sign that Samsung wants its customers to react differently by buying a new mobile phone, compatible with Android 4 OS... however, not sure they will purchase a Samsung model after such story...

Consumers Now Take More Than a Quarter of All Photos and Videos on Smartphones
Smartphones are becoming the go-to device for many consumers who want to take photos and videos on the fly. According to leading market research company The NPD Groups new Imaging Confluence Study, the share of U.S. consumers taking photos and videos on their smartphones has grown, while the camera and traditional camcorders share has declined. The percent of photos taken with a smartphone (Apple iPhone or any other smartphone) went from 17 last year to 27 this year while the share of photos taken on any camera dropped from 52 percent to 44 percent.

Source: The NPD Group/Imaging Confluence Study 2011
"There is no doubt that the smartphone is becoming good enough much of the time; but thanks to mobile phones, more pictures are being taken than ever before," says Liz Cutting, executive director and senior imaging analyst at NPD. "Consumers who use their mobile phones to take pictures and video were more likely to do so instead of their camera when capturing spontaneous moments, but for important events, single purpose cameras or camcorders are still largely the device of choice."
Camcorders and lower-end point-and-shoot cameras appear to have taken the brunt of the movement to smartphones. According to NPD's Retail Tracking Service, the point-and-shoot camera market was down 17 percent in units and 18 percent in dollars for the first 11 months of 2011. Pocket camcorders were down 13 percent in units and 27 percent in dollars and traditional flash camcorders declined 8 percent in units and 10 percent in dollars.
There were, however, positive growth segments of the market. Detachable lens cameras increased by 12 percent in units and 11 percent in dollars over the same time period, with an average price of $863; and point-and-shoot cameras with optical zooms of 10x or greater grew by 16 percent in units and 10 percent in dollars, with an average price of $247.

A new eBook titled Life with Siri by Jodi Dery helps iPhone 4S users get the most out of Siri. This new 128-page eBook includes 50 screenshots of the funniest Siri responses and 50 screenshots of the best Siri tips. It also includes a guide to Siri punctuation commands and a list of all the things Siri can do.

Author Jodi Dery explained the eBook's unusual format, commenting" "We feel that presenting Siri's responses in this illustrative manner, with lots screenshots rather than lots of text, will help people remember the best questions to ask Siri and the best way to get useful results."
The "Life with Siri" eBook is now available as a Kindle Edition on Amazon.com for $1.99. It will soon also be available from Barnes & Noble (BN.com) for other tablets, at the same price. A print edition is scheduled to be published in early January, priced at $4.99.
